Title: foams and their scientific names
Post by: goblin air on May 25, 2018, 03:56:01 PM
what is thermocol is it EPP EPS EPO or XPS
please provide info ... as i am confused with foams
as far as i know Thermocol is EPP, Depron is XPS..the foam used in fish ice box is EPO...
or what ?? please provide info with Examples

EPP is bendable, Epo is breakable. HD thermocol is EPS.

what is ice fish box made of is it the same material as eps or thermocol....shops here dont sell other types of foam other then thermocol EPS....i have to salvage foams from different sources

Did some Googling, as this is a question of lasting importance

Thermocol or Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a preferred packaging material across many industrial segments.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid and tough, closed-cell foam with a normal density range of 11 to 32 kg/m3. The so called High Density (HD) is typically ~ 15 Kg/cm3 or higher. It is usually white and made of pre-expanded polystyrene beads. EPS is used for many applications e.g. trays, plates, bowls and fish boxes. Other uses include molded sheets for building insulation and packing material ("peanuts") for cushioning fragile items inside boxes

Extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) consists of closed cells, offers improved surface roughness and higher stiffness and reduced thermal conductivity. The density range is about 28–45 kg/m3.

EPO  The normal foam density used for making RC airplanes are 30P(30Kg/Cu. m) , 34.5P(26Kg/m3), 40P(22.5kg/m3) and 55P(16Kg/m3). EPO advantage: -EPO is a lightweight and durable foam material. EPP is lightweight yet capable of flexing and returning to its given shape. Squeeze it,punch it and you will not dent it. EPP has very good impact characteristics due to its low stiffness; this allows EPP to resume its shape after impact

EPP - Expanded Polypropylene foam
EPO - Expanded Polyolefin
Thermocol - EPS ie Expanded Polystyrene

It can be found at a stationary shop by the Name HD Thermocol , though get some depron or corro as HD Thermocol is hard to cut (you would need a hot wire foam cutter as the matter of fact)

HD Thermocol is EPS of a higher density.

I don't build foamies. The topic here was Scientific names. Use the SEARCH function in the forum
