Hi everybody,

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I just wanted to let you know, I'm constantly adding new plans to my website. All are available to download and use as you wish. All that is asked, is "do not sell". I hope to add many more in the weeks to come so keep checking back.

Have fun,
Wayne

L'enfant Terrible du RCIndia

Wayne,

Thanks a ton and welcome to the forum!

I would suggest all newbies (especially scratchbuilders) to go through these two links posted by Wayne. They are like a Bible for designing your models.

VC,

Your very welcome. If there's anything I can do to help the newbie, just let me know. I'm not an expert, but I'm at the point where I can fly most of the planes I build, with mostly good results. I haven't yet gone to 2.4gz. I'm sticking with 72mhz FM because I fly alone and prefer the extra range. I use a JR SX-600 tx. These can be bought on Ebay at a very good price. I just use Corona 6 ch. receivers. If there's anyway to get flying cheap, I probably have the answer. I just need to learn what materials are readily available in India, so I can help you guys. On my http://www.downloadzgalore.com/rcplans page, you can see my funny looking trainer that can be built for next to nothing. A pool noodle, or pipe insulation, a 3/8" dowel or carbon fiber rod, and some foam, or coroplast, packing tape, and you have an almost indestructable trainer for next to nothing.

Have fun,
Wayne

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

Hi Wayne -

It would be great if you can post more details about your crashproof trainer in a thread of its own.  All equipment used, weight, glue used etc etc.  And a direct link to the plan of it.

Hi Anwar,

Sorry it took so long for a response to this. I thought I could come up with something by now, but I've been so busy with my website, other plane projects etc. I have no plans for my crashproof trainer. I built that over 2 yrs ago when I needed to self teach myself to build and fly. It's was just built from a hexagon shaped foam pool noodle (pipe insulation will work also) with a 3/8' dowel running threw it to hold the tail. I had numerous motors on it, but a 2208/12 1800KV with an 8" prop for clearance was the best result. The wing is just 1/4"x32"x7" fanfold foam held on to dowels with rubber bands. The entire plane was hot glued.

I really wish I had the time to do a new build of it for you guys, but that was a one time thing for me and now I'm always doing pusher jets. For the newcomer to the hobby, the thing I realized, was by using the information and tools (calculators and formulas) on my website, and some imagination, you can quickly build a flying plane. Taking a flat wing design, and starting with a C of G 1/3 of the way back from the leading edge gives you a good start for a flyable balance.

Again, I apologize for the late response and not being able to deliver plans at this time.

Wayne

Hi guys. I have been away for awhile, but just got some interesting plans for a quick build that I believe would make a nice trainer.
Please feel free to download and use.

BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS
Foamy Factory Models Mini Series   Superb detailed instructions on HOW TO BUILD A DEPRON PLANE:  http://www.foamyfactory.com/docs/Instructions-Mini-V1.2.2.pdf

Remember general 100 watts per pound for gliders
200 watts per pound for trainers or sport flying
250 to 300 watts for Pylon racing  or 3D flying
ie for 750 to1kg plane we need 300watt  480 / 960KVA motor with a 30 amp esc on 3 cell 2200mah with 8x6, 9x4 prop or 9.5 x 7.5  (T28 by Parkzone’s prop)
same for 3D will need 400 watt with 40 amp esc
1.5KG plane will require 600 watts ( 600-800KVA) 60 amp esc with 11 x 7 or 12 x6 prop

Flite Test : Hot Glue - FAST TIP ;

This site showcases big electric planes, has loads of free plans, covers many interesting contruction topics and provides circuit diagrams and advice for lithium batteries. Electrics used to be difficult; today with brushless motors and lithiums we are spoilt for choice. ... I like the Bounce here…

BOUNCE Great 3D model with 24" (605mm) wing. Almost indestructable using EPP. EPP is more resilient and lighter than Depron so try it. Designed for CD-Rom motors it weighs under 6oz. I don't think you will be disappointed with this model!

Don't wake a Tiger until you've factored the teeth

That  is a mighty comprehensive list, and will serve as a bookmark yo many here. Thanks so much.

I don't agree with that old formula of

"Remember general 100 watts per pound for gliders
200 watts per pound for trainers or sport flying
250 to 300 watts for Pylon racing  or 3D flying"

In my experience, which undoubtedly is limited, 100 W per pound is more than adequate for trainers and sport models. In fact, on these the normal in-flight power is about 50~60 Watts.

Even a common powered Glider like the Easystar does not cross 40 W/lb in normal flying.

Hey guys where do yo all get your foams (epp, epo, depron) im tired of searching....at last ive to cut my packing cardboard to make my plane...which was very tiresome

Erik , i have purchased same thing as depron, but with different name.
you can go to any stationery shop near , architect colleges. architects use same depron type things to make small models of buildings. stationary shops call it high density thermacol, it comes in 4 mm and 8 mm sizes.

or go with CORO , instead of carboard.( just a suggestion )

Hi Sanjay,
It all depends on the motors we are using too... for example I built this Depron delta with PVC ELECTRICAL TRUNKING as a exchangeable power pod fuselage ;

http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/epp-foamie-mini-v-unbreakable-type-fun-plane/msg157707/#msg157707

It just glided to ground when it was launched....Had to modify a bit as the motor was not powerful enough to carry 450 grams (350 model +battery100gms)
HexTronik 24gram Brushless Outrunner 1300kv   Brushless Outrunner Motor.   Kv - 1300rpm/v
Max Load:  7.5A  No Load Current: 0.7A  Suggested Lipo: 3 cell 11.1v    Thrust: 400g+
Suggested Prop: 8x3.8   Weight: 20g

EMAX 2822 installed .... reasonable flight now... Could do with a bit more OOOmph!!!  ..
When reading the specs of these motors they say they are capable for flying models from 200 grams to 800 grams but that is a load of bull...

EMAX CF2822 (125W) 1200Kv Brushless Outrunner Motor

SPECS:* Type: CF2822  * Weight: 39g  * Efficiency: 85%  * Cont Current: 10A
* Max Current: 16A (10sec)  * Kv: 1200 (revs per volt) * No load current 10v: 0.9A
* Dimensions: 22 x 10mm * Motor Shaft diameter: 3 mm * Recommended model weight: 200-800g
* No. Of cells: 2-3 Lipo or 6-8 Cells Ni-xx

Powerful outrunner with the ability to swing large props makes it ideal for E3D, Aerobatic, Sports models from 200-800g - there is also a 1500Kv verson for faster models!

I like my models overpowered than underpowered and was expecting this motor to propel it like a rocket but no..I find this 125 watt motor can just about pull a 450 grams// just over a pound weight...!!!

If we use your theory of 50 to 60 grams per pound then this model only weighs a pound and a few ounces.... and the motor is 125 watts

Don't wake a Tiger until you've factored the teeth

1. My observation was on a trainer weighing 1.2 Kg, flying with a motor of 1180 KV, max 270 W; a Sporty Biplane weighing 650 grams with a motor 1400 KV max 190 W, a high winger sport weighing 1.9 Kg with a motor 1500 KV max 400 W, and a few others
2. I specifically use the word "in flight" i.e. exclude take-off, maneuvers etc.
3. I still stand by my own experience
4. The Wattage figures are 'as measured' not 'as rated'
5.  I measure thrust directly, along with wattage and current drawn. It is noteworthy that often ratings tend to be exaggerated, and it is better to measure yourself with the prop you will be using - a Gemfan prop and an MAS prop of the same size will produce quite different results
6. Not 50 grams per pound but 50 W per pound. Also an electric motor needs two parameters to be specified - Torque & speed, or watts and speed. Your Hextronic 1300 KV motor is producing only about 50~65 Watts in reality. If you measure it you will see. 7.5 A max, running will be 5~6 A, running voltage will be about 10~10.5 .
7. In smooth level flight, obviously above stall speed, a trainer should not draw more than 50~60 Watts per pound.

Of course, it would depend on wing loading too. A heavy model would need more power than a light one of the same dimensions

One size won't fit all

Here is an example of a Branded Motor Specification. Wattage derivation is not so simple. Best and reliable method is actual measurement

 Himax HC2812-1080 Motor
            Weight: 2.12oz (60g)
Max Power: HC2812 series, 160W (dependent on several factors)
            Max RPM: 20,000 RPM
            Diameter: 1.09" (27.8mm)
            Length: 1.14" ( 28.9mm)
            Shaft Diameter: .157" (4mm)
Mounting Screw Thread: 2.5mm, max depth 4.5mm on 16mm (.625") bolt
              circle
            Maximum Case Temperature: 149°F (65°C)
            kV: 1080Rm = .111 lo = 0.75
Efficient Operating Current 5-13A, 15A max 15 seconds

To all my friends "HAPPY LANDINGS"....

Sanjay,
Thanks for all your comments... Nice to have your input as all fellow modellors are now sharing the wealth of your knowledge too...

I normally discuss with fellow modellors and decide on the motor.... Even though I invested in a watt meter a year ago, it is still in its packing and I have not had the chance to use it.

So my knowledge on this field is limited...

I have recently been following Experimental Airlines and this guys advise is quite sound...

I normally discuss with fellow modellors and decide on the motor....

However I have found that whatever the manufacturers advise as thrust of the motor, it is never actual thrust in practical but if my model is half the weight, the motor tends to propel it like a rocket if needed and reasonably slow when needed....

I am scratchbuilding a DEPRON 1mt span plane and will need Ramesh Tahlan and your help in deciding the motor when the time comes..

Better unpack that wattmeter!  Wink Wink Giggle

RT sir is a master!  Salute You are in good hands there

It does make sense to use a slightly higher rated motor, if you can live with the extra weight and the larger, heavier ESC (and the additional cost Cheesy)

BTW, which Depron model are you building? Yesterday I was reading about the FT Racer, a speed model, 60" wingspan. Recommended motor is a 2826 - 1400 KV! That produces 160 W or so with a 9*47 SF.
