Title: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on November 04, 2014, 02:56:03 PM
Saw FT STORCH swappable plane and decided  to build one.
Plans can be found here http://flitetest.com/articles/ft-simple-storch-build (http://flitetest.com/articles/ft-simple-storch-build)

As there is no access to dollar tree Foam board, I have made the entire plane with 6mm Depron with packing tape on one side.

First the most important, the POWER POD. As it can be used on other series of plane,to make it strong I have build this with coro. Instead of ply I have used 6mm MDF sheet for motor mount.

Electronics used
1- Dt 750 bell motor
1- 50amp ESC
2- 10*6 prop
4- 9gm servos
4- servo extensions

Wings made according to the plans , with crease and folded to make airfoil.
As the wing is little bigger to gave it strength, used some wooden spars.

Fuse is made with two pieces to give similar elevated look as of the original plane.
Tail is attached to the fuse.

Used small plastic card so that while attaching the wings the bamboo skewers should not tear the foam.
Power pod attached with help of skewers and spokes.

Excellent build Manoj!  {:)} {:)} {:)}

What a wonderful idea, using corro for the swappable power pod! One problem with depron/foamboard/biofoam is the material tears fast, especially where the skewers fit.

What a shame too, that at least 40 people have viewed this thread, and not even a single selfish soul bothered to leave a comment. RC Indian Cattle?    :violent: >:( >:( : 8-)

Thank you Nithinraj and sanjay sir.

Sanjay sir, you always inspire me, During my entire build,i was thinking, you must have also faced same hurdles during your Babyblender.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on November 07, 2014, 12:39:32 PM
Here is the maiden video.
Flew beautifully,once trimmed.Fly real slow.
Once in the air, was flying at 30% throttle. Also glide well on throttle cut.
Have a tendency, to gain altitude on increasing throttle. may be i have to decrease some wing incidence.

Over all, great experience, Highly recommend for beginners.

Hi manoj,

The plane flew nice, what is the AUW of model and you used only clear tape for construction or any hot glue ?

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on November 07, 2014, 07:49:47 PM
Thanks sahil,
AUW is 930 gms, i have used clear tape on one side of depron. Because we don't have paper coated dollar tree foam board. Have used hotglue all over in the build.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: b4ggu on November 13, 2014, 05:46:49 PM
Nice build Manoj.... we have a couple of these out of 6mm Depron on our field. They have painted it with normal household emulsion paint. I use Depron regularly and cover with packaging tape. Another idea to keep your pod strong is use plasterboard joining tape (Scrim tape inside and coat it with pva) the skewers/ dowels will not let the depron rip. Fellow fliers have used the clear re-inforced tape on the sheet first and then cut out the part.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on November 14, 2014, 11:15:06 AM
Thank you deepak sir,
i haven't put a color scheme yet. Planning to apply radium sheet.
Surely will try scrim tape next time.
Actually i have used small plastic cards, Hot glued them, and passed the skewers through them. Its holding well without tearing the Foam during rough landing.
I also use same technique of apply clear tape and then cut out the parts.

Manoj, first - Congrats! And thereafter, I have a few requests-

Please incorporate the fixed undercarriage, wing struts and Luftwaffe markings - then and only then will she be a true Storch!

Nice built manoj, congrats

what mah battery u have used in this plane, coz with depron no hard landings are permitted  {:)}

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on November 15, 2014, 10:48:22 AM
@manu -  Thanks buddy
@Vc sir  - As i detach the wings after every flying, i had not add struts to fuse.
Sure will add undercarriage, was little afraid as hard landings with undercarriage will tear the
              Foam.
@ prashant-  I had apply some hot glue to the nose underpart, for those belly landings. Was also worried
while landing, but the plane landed very slowly, thanks to its huge wingspan and
flaperons, they really slow down the plane.

Wow Manoj.. that paint job looks really nice.. You will be able to spot it miles away too..
And the crosses...

Well Done!     :0 )

What did you use to paint it ? Is it house hold emulsion or acrylic paint? I havent tried using any of them even though my friends at the club do it all the time.

I use packaging tape to cover all my Depron and Coro planes.

Depron becomes very strong once covered.

As you have done, I cover it in white first and then apply other colours on top ... You can even apply heat activated film if you do it carefully..

I was just thinking you mentioned that when you speed up or throttle up, the plane tends to climb..

I had that issue with my D & A midwinger.

It could also mean that its a bit tail heavy still..

Though it is balancing on your fingers, if you try to balance it on a true C &G scale, it will turn out slight tail heavy I think.

I added some nose weight and my plane is perfect now.. You may want to try that???

Happy flying..
Deepak

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on June 23, 2015, 10:33:50 AM
Thank you Deepak sir.
The yellow is painted by locally available paint cans. The red one is packing tape.cut to give crosses. white is the depron colour itself.
sir i use the same technique of covering the depron with packing tape,as you have shown in the pic, it hold the depron strong and prevents tearing.

You are right sir,the plane was tail heavy. and the angle of incidence was also little high.
i am now converting it to twin engine, for fpv.

Would be nice to see it flying as Sanj says...  Let us know.

How did you mount the motors on the wing?

You might want to strengthen that area by some scrim tape.. (See image)

Apparently Emax do a speed controller for Quad Copters that can handle two motors.....

You might be able to save some weight there if you were to use one of those.

See if RCD or Vivek at "Sharma Model Aero & Props" have one in stock??

Deepak

It is illicit to use a RC Model for dropping anything, except with prior permission. Chances of misuse are too high

This is a voluntary restriction put forth by AMAI (amai.in)

Sorry for late reply
Thanks friends.
Deepak sir, will search for scrim tape for sure. I have used two same A rating, same manufacturer esc . Motor emax cf28212 1200 kv.
posting some pics of motor mount

I have flown this twin setup two days back, it flew very good , some what fast, due to its weight(1.3 kg) and 1200kv setup.
during a sharp turn , the rubber band broke in between and if fell down. the tail broke, rest is reparable.

Hello Manoj,
I'm new to the hobby already broke one F22 as i was not able to get into the air (config was Emax 2822 1200kv outrunner, 30A ESC, 1250mah lipo, 9gram servo, 9060 prop).

Now, building FT simple Storch but not sure which motor to use. As they have suggested Suppo 1250kv but I'm not able find here in india.
Can you please help me where to buy it and also please share all required electronics with what we can easily fly this plane as this plane will be trainer plane for me.

Thank you,
Faiz

Can get a similar motor.
Same wattage and same kv out there.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: Faiz.kadri on July 31, 2016, 02:03:16 PM
Will Simple storch fly with Emax 2822 1200kv ? As weight will be around 1.8lb (approx 800grams) and motor generates max thrust of 650grams.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on July 31, 2016, 10:42:12 PM
Hi Faiz
first of all, if your are new to the hobby, F22 was not a good choice.
Ft STORCH is the right one for you now.surely go with it. its very easy to fly and it glides very well.

Emax CF 2822 wont be good for this plane. I suggest you to go for Dt 750, with 11 inch prop. for some reasons.
It has good 1000 gm thrust, it has low rpm so you can fly slowly, and learn on this plane.
Best of luck. for your build.

Hello Manoj,
Thank you so much for your quick reply.
I'm done with the cuttings on depron and soon going to joint all the parts.
Manoj can you please share the link where and which motor to buy even with no. and codes I'm totally new and from totally different background.
Also please share where did you get this paint sticks for the wings.

Many thanks,
Faiz

Manoj one more thing,
Will this dt750 work fine with 30A esc and 1250mah battery?
Because i already have 30A esc and 1250mah battery.

I'm thinking to replace the landing gear of Storch with Bushwacker's landing gear as it looks very nice, should i go for the relacement of landing gear or not ?

Please do share your suggestions...

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on August 01, 2016, 12:57:11 PM
Dt 750 will be more than ok with 30amp ESC, as it takes less current.
but you should go for a bigger lipo.  1250 is less, at least go for 2200 mah 3S lipo.

one more thing. Try to reduce weight from tail section, if possible.
Because you will surely end with tail heavy plane. and for CG balancing you will need haeay lipo, 1250 is way lighter.

for landing gear, if you can fix it, its not a issue. use it.

Do share some build pics.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: K K Iyer on August 01, 2016, 02:15:51 PM
@faiz.kadri,
Here is some data for your consideration:

You expect AUW of about 1.8lb/800gms.
I presume your wing size will be around 48x8". Or about 2.67sqft
That will give you a wing loading of around 11oz/sqft.

A model of this size and wing loading will fly like a trainer on power loading of 50watts/lb, or say 90w.

I had run some tests on a DT750 two years ago. Using an 11x5.5 EMP prop, one of the data points was 7.5amps/ 12.25v/ 92w/ 600gms thrust.
This should be adequate for your model.

At 7.5amps, 10minutes will consume 1250mah.
So your 1250 mah lipo should be safe for 5 minutes flying.
(I presume it is 3cell, not 2cell)

I didn't note the rpm with this prop, but my notes show 5900rpm at 9amps/ 105w on an 11x7.
I guess the 11x5.5 will do about 6000rpm at ~7-8amps.
That should give you airspeed of 40-50kmph, about right for such a model flying at half throttle!

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

@Manoj, Thank you so much for your help. Definitely will share the pics once i complete with building and fitting the electronics.
Manoj where did you get the paint sticks ? I have searched alot but not able to get it.

Also there's 3 option with whom this Storch can be configured - 1) Simple Aileron (using Y cable) 2) Flappron (independent channel) 3) combination of Aileron and flapps.

Which one i should go for ??

@K K Iyer,
Thank you for your assistance, but I'm from totally different background (belongs to finance :D) but this is my hobby and love to do this stuffs. These numbers and calculations will jargon for me right now as am new to this hobby.

But sure will increase my knowledge as much as i can...

Thank you so much again for the help on this...

Faiz

@faiz.kadri,
Oops.
All it means is that the motor will be able to fly the model using about half throttle, and that you battery will last about 5 minutes before needing recharge!
Hope this sounds better ;D

very well explained by iyer sir, with dt 750 you can cruise for half throttle.

The paint is just using color tape. which you get in stationary store.
As you are new, just go for aileron with y cable. IF you are have more free channels, you can go for flaperons also. i have used flaperons

@Manoj, not paint but I'm asking about the wooden sticks that you have used to joint wings for reinforcement.

Also please share how to configure flappron and only ailerons.

I have Avionix TH9B from Rcbazaar. How to configure it on this transmittor?

In the middle use ''wooden scale'' piece. and at the sides i have used wooden dowels, ( motor repairing guys stock them.)

i don't know much about your TX, but surely there must be an option of  ''flaperon''.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: Faiz.kadri on August 02, 2016, 06:37:37 PM
Thank you Manoj, will find2-3 wooden scales...

Manoj is there any settings that we can do to reduce the servo response time because when i was flying f22 it was so responsive that even with a little touch and vibration servo started reacting alot.

I have ordered hextronix dt750 yesterday the seller confirmed it won't come with bullet connectors so will have to solder it but not able to find bullet connectors as its out of stock everywhere.

Try for bullets from rchyper or eBay.in
Use exponential for your controls will reduce the response rate.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build

Can't comment.
I think the x7 will have a higher pitch speed than the x5.5 in the air. I.e the x7 will be faster.
Go for the 11x5.5
Let others speak, I am not so sure about the knowledge I have.

Faiz 11x 5.5 will be better, slow flying ans stability is what you want in your current model.

APC props are stronger, but be sure to order some extra pairs of the props.

For now i have ordered APC 11×5.5 from vertexRC, the cost is 3 times the normal prop's price (Rs.329).
I already have 9050 and 8x6 (slow fly) props but not sure whether these props will able to fly or not...

Please consider adding some dihedral. Say 5-6degrees each side.
Believe me it will save you a lot of headaches when you fly it...
Best of luck.

How much max weight storch can fly with dt750, 11×5.5 prop and 2200 (3cell) mah ?

How much max weight storch can fly with dt750, 11×5.5 prop and 2200 (3cell) mah ?

For a reasonable answer to that,
You have to tell us the wing span and chord, ie, area
And post a side on pic of the aerofoil.
Depends on the wing loading, you see...

But i'd expect this motor/prop/lipo combo to fly an 800-1000gm model easily.
(If it was below about 12oz/sqft  ;D)

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: manojswizera on August 13, 2016, 10:27:40 AM
Faiz the model is looking beautiful,
as said by iyyer sir, add some dihedreal,
for weight , dont worry much about weight, if you going with the plan , you will be under 1 kg. if it goes to 1.2 kg then also dt 750 will fly this model easily.

Title: Re: FT STORCH build
Post by: Faiz.kadri on August 13, 2016, 11:36:07 AM
Thank you Manoj 😊😊😊
Yup i will add dihedral to the wing today...
I just thought to share the pics, I will post more pics once i get this Storch complete. 😊😊
Actually i was planning to put hobbyking 9 Mode LED strip. (I already have it) but sticking on the wing and fuselage to the tail it will require some soldering and it would add more weight...
