Title: Help to choose motor for my skysurfer v4
Post by: Nirup MS on May 21, 2020, 01:14:40 AM
Hey guys,
I recently bought a RCBazaar skysurfer v4 kit(without electronics). The skysurfer v4 motors were out of stock so i had to use my spare motors.I was about to use my 1400kv a2212 motors ,but the props of these motors were too big.I had another motor (Readytosky rs2205 2300kv)which i used with 6inch prop included with the skysurfer. When I did the thrust test on this motor,i got thrust about 400g on full throttle and 200g on half throttle. The weight of the plane is about 800g.So the thrust to weight ratio is 0.5:1 ....,I am Still a begginer..,i have made 3 planes till now and non of them have lasted more than 10secs...so i still dont know how to fly a plane..I just wanted to know whether i will be able to have a good flight with this thrust to weight ratio..I just dont want to crash even this plane. So plz help me out,....I'm using a 30a esc, 2200mah 3s lipo,rs2205 2300kv motors...

How did you measure the thrust?

It does seem the motor is underpowered

What is the plane weight (with full electronics)?

@ Nirup MS,
Hi,
If you have seen a Skysurfer fly, you would have noticed that it flies quite well with the power off. It glides, losing height gradually.

Very little power/thrust is required to maintain altitude.
Extra power is required for climbing.
It is completely wrong to think that such a model needs 1:1 power to weight ratio to climb safely.

I have a 64” Sunbird that weighs just under 400 gms. It cruises (ie, holds altitude) easily at 100gms thrust (25w). And climbs safely from a hand launch at 150 gms thrust. (These are measured values, not guesses).

The Skysurfer with original motor is hand launched fairly fast and with the nose pointing up ~10-15 degrees. This is due to the unusual thrust line, which pushes the nose down at high power/ low airspeed (as at launch)

However, a nose high launch is unsuitable when the model is suspected to be underpowered.

My suggestion is to run the motor at half throttle and hand launch in a level attitude at a jogging pace.
As the power will be inadequate to climb, the model will probably fly at the same level, or descend gradually. Increase throttle gradually. I expect it will climb away gradually.

Remember three things.
1. Check that the CG ls at the correct location, as specified.
2. DO NOT PULL UP ELEVATOR IN LOW POWER CONDITIONS.
3. Do not use full throttle continuously as the 2300kv motor will probably overheat with the 6” prop when using 3s lipo.

Here’s a short video of hand launch and climb out of the Sunbird. The Skysurfer on full power climbs much faster

Best wishes for your test flights.

Somnath Maji The weight of the plane with all the electronics is 790 grams.

sanjayrai55 I kept the weighing machine against the wall and put the nose of the surfer on it and gave full throttle. At 50% i got about 200 grams and at 100% i got about 400-420grams..

In case of gliders - thrust to weight ratio up-to  1:2

the thrust of your motor should be enough
advice given by seniors sanjayrai55, K K Iyer above is absolutely  correct.

Thank u guys for all ur support....
I just have one really last question......Today i tested out the motor with a 5045 triblade prop and found out that it gave a little more thrust than the 6 inch(About 10 grams more)but thats not a big difference.. but there were less vibration when i used the 5045 prop and motor was found to be running smooth than what it used to on the 6 inch...sooo which one should i use , the recomended 6 inch or the 5045...

APC style 5045 prop will give you more thrust than the normal one

I've noticed @Punindas had posted random unrelated stuff on another thread. Doesn't reply when asked why.

hey, I did buy the v4 kit alone as the PNP version was sold out. At the time of electronics hunt online I found most motor at RC bazaar sold out and same so with other stores as well. i looked up at amazon and I found the 2212 2200kv. i used it with the prop given in the kit and the electronics recommended and the powertrain gave me an output of 1kg approx. which was sufficient with the landing gear . I had the 1400kv 2212 as well again from amazon but this was underpowered, i couldn’t use a slightly bigger prop as it would hit the fuselage. but the 2200kv worked really fine. the take away was that we need to use a min 2000kv for such a model with prop dia max of 6inch.
my reply may be late but hope it helps others.
