Title: HobbyKing Bixler versus HK AXN Floater aka Clouds Fly
Post by: anwar on August 07, 2011, 02:10:52 PM
A friend who wanted to order either of these wanted to know which one is better (if any better).

The AXN seems to take 2200mAH lipos well, but the Bixler is listed at 1300mAH.

Anyone who has flown both ?  Was it Divay who was commenting on this earlier ?

Hi Anwar,

Here is my reading of both the planes (I am teaching a number of people on both the AXN (aka clouds fly) and the HK bixler (aka skysurfer on bannanahobby)

First abt the Stock motor -

AXN - Fantastic motor ... good propulsion nice clime during hand launch
Bixler -Good motor - can be a bit better .....try installing a 2600 kv one and then have unlimited vertical .....

The flight character -

Very similar for both the models ... however the Bixler has a much better glide ....

The build -

AXN - Tough can handle some bad crashes ....however the battery compartment is small and gets a bit stuffy with a 2200 mah 3s

Bixler - Comparitevely less strongly built - however has an excellent spacing where you can fit a 2200 mah and much more !!!

The battery and ESC selection :

AXN or Bixler - If you are going to be using a 2200 mah ensure to use a ESC which 30 amps - 40 amps -- Mount the ESC on the outside ......

Battery :

AXN 2200 mah 3S - Perfect CG - 30 mins flight time

Bixler 2200 mah 3s - Perfect CG - Do not forget to remove the iron rings which come glued in on the front of the fuselage (inside) ....30 mins flight time ....

Hope the information helps.....

Thanks Divay... that seems to sum it up nicely.  The bit I was particularly interested in was the "glide" part.  I have seen AXNs misbehaving after couple of crashes, until you carefully set things up again, or do throttle adjustments.

Can i fit a 5000 mah 2s lipo pack in a bixler , if so then does it fly well, and how much flight time do i get

40 mins to an hour, very much, 5000 mah surely (depending on your motor)

I think the the Bixler has a slightly more bulky body and its flight characteristics might be a bit sloppy compared to that of the AXN . I currently have the AXN , I will be getting the bixler in a months time , probably then i'd be able to give a better review .
@Divay - Why should the ESC be mounted on the outside ? Aren't the vents sufficient for cooling ? Just curious .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but mah doesn't affect the motor. As it's the capacity, only flight time will be increased. Also, 5000 mah will definitely put the cg out of balance, provided the battery can be accommodated to a different place in the fuselage to maintain the cg. I don't have a bixler but I have sky surfer, which I believe is identical to bixler in dimensions. I use 2200 mah battery and I get more than 30 mins of relaxed flying.

@vishalrao : I guess what Augustine sir meant was the endurance will depend upon how much current your motor and prop combintion consumes because that is what will ultimately decide how long will the 5Ah battery last...

Yes I too believe so!

Sorry I missed the 2S part. I doubt whether 2S could deliver enough power to the motor.
