Title: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 11, 2012, 02:17:28 PM
So its time to update my new plane made up of coro 2mm
i am arun from kerala(palakkad). i started this hobby more than 4 years ago and now only took it as so serious and making a plane was my dream and few months back i managed to build one and it crashed due to lack of experience and some tech probs..
then i decided to build a trainer for better trainer as a beginner.
wait for the picture of the trainer plane...

using  much high kv motor this will be out of sight too early

Arun you should use 1000 to 1500 kv motor with 8 or 7 inch prop. To start with your first plane..
good luck for ur first flight

Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 11, 2012, 05:04:00 PM
currently i have orderd a 1200KV motor and not rchd my hands yet thats y using this 2200Kv and smaller prop..
so need to wait until the motor come right..?
thanks for your help.

Yes it will be better if u wait for ur motor.
Your first flight should not be hurry  :)

ok then i will wait for the motor..
also now i know the reason why my first plane crashed... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  >:(
dont want to repeat it again..
thanks swizera

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span

the reason why the bignr buddies fail for there first flight due to lack of knowledge , i think wait for the right electronics would be more far good than the crash and making the model again

Another thing,

Your battery is too ooo big, I recommend a smaller size to start with.

This will make your plane go slow and easy to handle

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 12, 2012, 08:34:37 AM
@ hangingtough: battery is too big means the size or the power?
 i am having a 900mah 3s 20c lipo also.. should i use that..
or need to go for 2s?

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 12, 2012, 08:38:21 AM
you are right vineet, crash in the first flight will make disappoinment to all bgners.. now will wait until everything gets fine and then only going to fly..
will post pics and information after the changes.. :)
what about the battery dude as hangingtough suggested? :headscratch:

@ hangingtough: battery is too big means the size or the power?

I think SIZE. if u have 3s in smaller capacity u can go for that also(to reduce the ALW of ur plane . other wise your 2200 , will also be fine enough.

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: hangingtough on October 12, 2012, 11:42:29 AM
No the weight of 2200 is about 70g more than a 1000, at entry level it makes a huge difference

Setup is already very typical.
High kv motor .

So He should be careful in selecting the other items

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 12, 2012, 12:38:36 PM
no dude i am gonna change the motor to a 1200kv one with a 9x5 prop..
also if needed having a 900mah 3s also... so it wil be fine i think.. i can sacrifise in the flying time for my first flights... after that will go for 2200 mah...
fine?     :)

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span

Where is your battery located? If it is not right on the cg, you must move the lighter battery close to the nose to maintain the cg at 33% of the chord from the leading edge of the wings. CG is the single most crucial thing to look out for. Also make sure that you battery can handle the motor. Your 2200kv motor will kill the 900mAh battery at full throttle :P

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 13, 2012, 08:36:53 AM
battery is under the wings bottom side... also i am going to change the motor to 1200kv emax... as juggested above.. and 900mah for first time and later will try to move on to 2200mah...
 8-)
is it oky? :headscratch:

Also make sure there is absolutely no vibration in motor or in prop,

just try to run the motor with prop and check before take off

all the best  {:)}

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 31, 2012, 12:48:45 PM
hai prasant no vibration at all in full throttle with prop... but the motor is getting heated...
is it common with this series..?

@arun.m a begineer too.and m on avispad.will post the electronics later.

And also make sure that the grub screws are enough tight for the e-max motor. I am also using the same motor E-Max CF 2822 for my spad model. For every flight i need to check the grub screws status, even though there is no vibration at all. But the motor power is really fantastic. I guess for your model weight you can even use 9x5 prop. It works fine. Because, for my model i am using 3s 2200 mah battery and same motor and 9x5 prop. It flies nicely and slowly.

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: akky on October 31, 2012, 03:43:03 PM
your motor is heating because 1047 is an overload for emax fc 2822....try to use 8045 or 09038 or  9045 at max

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on October 31, 2012, 04:05:06 PM
but saw many post and they are using 10" props for 2822 and also in the motor its written as 9-10" prop..
nyway will try by changing the prop.. i already have 8 and 9" props with me.. thanks for the inf akky..  :salute: :salute:

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span

Look,
when you fly, heat will be lower then static thrust and so much of heat will not be there.

Or you can say as the plane advances, the amount of air shifted to the final velocity from zero will not be so much as the prop itself advances. (Shifted air volume reduced in cylinder length).
With the same motor(from VKSingh), I have used 10x6 prop too, but heating occures without burning (Static THRUST at full throttle even for 1 minute). But continuing beyond that sure burn that(during testing, I have no IR Thermometer). The test was with Turnigy plush 30A and with Red Brick 30 A too. Results same.
Of course this test turns turnigy plush in a defective one and become with servo jitter. Red brick(from vineet, earlier than starting his shop at hobbysea) was rock solid though Red Brick was cheap too. (Rs.530 over 870/-).
I recomend, if you don't need ESC programming, Go for Red Brick.

Just check what prop makes the plane vertical flight just at par. Use more than that prop-Motor-Battery Combo (known as static thrust and in gm).

Also, test everything in a charged battery and measure before and after voltage for testing.

Thanks

i think prop savers wud hav greatly helped.....
i cant conclude much ...... probably CG is not balanced...... need to add weight to tail probably... (if it was not windy)
otherwise fliht characteristics were wonderful.... stable ........
also some simulator lessons wud do lot help......

arun,
all looks fine from the video.
Go to a bigger place and fly. u will surely succeed. Many people make this mistake of going to a small place to save on travel, but end up much more time and money repairing the plane esp while maidening.
One needs much more skill also to fly in a confined area.
best wishes

Arun

Happy Birthday!   :goodjob:

What a wonderful present to give yourself.  {:)} {:)}

I have read through your posts, and you have indeed been very enterprising: doing that model yourself, and then flying yourself. The true Spirit of Aeromodelling!   :hatsoff:

All the best: a big ground is helpful! You are lucky that Cricket is not so popular in Kerala; unlike other parts in India where any big ground gets swamped on Sundays!  ;D ;D

Very stable flight. And congrats too for stable flight without guide. Now just make an pusher just to save on prop using twin boom, same wing assembly.
Just have to replace fuselage and rudder, elevator assembly.
An spreadsheet is given for easy calculation of battery placing.
Use 48" wingspan sheet and enter your data. You can check fuselage data and CG.
If any help I will be lucky. Just have to add weight in wt. with coro.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwGryIQR1d40VjAyanhkRTcxVUE

Hope, with this trainer, you will not need to be sorry for prop breakage.
Happy landing.

@kalyan sir I really enjoyed flying yesterday with my trainer for about 1 hour...
used 3 lipos for flying..
2200mah
900mah
1500mah
all balanced correctly and the flying vid here is with 2200mah battery...
and broken one prop in the last landing... :(
I was really planning for a pusher next as you said
I think your model will be perfect for me(was planning for a blixer model earlier)
thanks for your plan sir... now bit engaged with my ornithopter.. soon start build after that.. {:)} {:)} {:)}

Hi Arun,

Last week i order most electronics from HK. looks like it may take week or two...
Meantime got the 6ch Transmitter and waiting for the Sim to do some practice  ;D

I was had a close look at your model and connections and just wanted to know that the connections between ESC and motor cable colours are interchanged. (Red to yellow / yellow to Red) Any specific reason ?

the image file name is DSC_4313.jpg

Please do let me know

thanks

there is no need to look for the colour codes on the motor esc connection do it in any way... if the motor spins the opposite direction leave the middle one and interchange the other two wires thats it..
some esc will be having same colour wires from it.. so dont be get confused..

Fine but must be overpowered.. no need of this much high W motor..  :headscratch: :headscratch:

Hi Arun,

Yesterday got the package from HK  ;D

:headscratch: The motor which ordered (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18969) and it has a instruction sheet and they mention that it has to be used with 40A ESC. Waht actuall i bought is 20A ESC. i dont think i can use 20A for this motor, but still i thought of asking you and other experts whether its safe to use 20A ESC for above mentioned motor?

Also got these props
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=20862
But it has very small hole (2mm dia), not sure how i can use them.

Please let me know your thoughts, i also request others to give your feedback.  :help:

Thanks
Cheluvaraj

Maybe many will disagree with me, but I feel a little extra power is good, certainly better than underpowered. You don't have to run at full throttle, get a better life out of your motor/engine

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: cheluvaraj on January 31, 2013, 12:06:19 PM
What i understand is that motor needs 40A ESC but 20A can be used right?
Is that means we are using half of the motor power at full throttle ?

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: girishsarwal on January 31, 2013, 12:34:39 PM
You might want to understand it this way -

When an engine runs, it drives the propeller and the propeller cuts through air, the power (dum) to cut through air is being provided by the engine. The engine is your source of energy. When the prop size increases, more power is required because you are cutting through more air, the same engine will run the propeller but run it at a lesser speed (r.p.m). Theoretically, if you keep on increasing the propeller size, there will be a time when the engine will turn slowly, not delivering enough for flying worthiness

With electrics, its slightly different, the motor is not the source of energy, its the battery that's the source of energy and the energy comes enroute the ESC. The motor in any case *will* drive the prop. So if you increase the prop size, the motor will still turn but will draw more current from the ESC. The 20A is the max rating that the ESC can deliver, so in your setup if the motor is pulling in less than equal to 20A at full throttle all is well, but let us say based on your prop size the motor pulls in somewhat higher than 20A, your esc will not be able to live up and poof! Some damage may happen to the battery also if it's incapable of delivering the required power. Now if your spec says it needs a 40A ESC so it is advisable to go with a 40A ESC

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't do that. Use a 40/50/60 A ESC! Not 20A

Very nicely explained Girish .....

However what battery you are using chelu... if its 2S which you should use in case you are going with a 10x4.7 Prop against the recommended 11x7 prop.

You can use 20A ESC with no issues with 2S battery ( 7.4 volts) ..... But will your 50" WS plane take off would be in question.

with your motor the best you can do is 3S battery 2200mAh  & 8x4 , 8x6, 9x5 prop.... Why 3 types because one of these would give the best result according to your plane.

all said the motors max current is 18Amp so ideally we should have min 30Amp ESC to try out different props and batteries.

hope this info adds to the one given by girish.

If you are ordering only one set of prop then that should be recommended one else you have to use 3-4 different props to suit your requirement.

The Motor which cheluvaraj bought draws only 18A so that in my view of selection of esc multiplying max current draw *1.5
so that using a 25-30A esc will be perfect. As the motor is for 2s-4s
using a 9047 prop with 3s lipo and 20A esc Should do it right?

I ordered one 40A ESC, and will be using 9x4 prop to start with.
Also ordered 10x6 prop. would like to see these combination and see how its going to be.

I have built the plane which Arun built. this is my first RC plane and just finished building. need to put the electronics and test it.

Dear Arun,

Got all electronics. Going for hunting Coro in chennai today.

My Elec:

Emax2822 1200KV
20A/30A Esc
3x9g servo
2200mha 3S 20C (yet to get it)
6ch flysky

Is that good to go?

I am not able to follow the wing construction.
Can you please help me in constructing the wing portion.

Hello shivela The electronics you Have is perfect for this model..
If you can buy a spare 1000-1200mah lipo, 2200mah is possible but for the first time use smaller battery for light weight and greater control..
Any way I am using 2mm coro for the entire build...
I have attached the Dimensions of my plane in the post #49

Thanks arun,

I am already referring the RUSS40 attachment.

In the wind section diagram, Should i use 50x18 inch piece of coro folded at 9 inch center?
and a rib inside to be added from wind front at 3 inch.
Dihedral to be done in both the side at 7 inch.

 Is that right?

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on February 09, 2013, 12:13:14 PM
Shiv: first cut out a 50x14" section and a 50x3" section
Now fold the 50x14" section from the 9"
and stick the 50x3"section as seen on the picture and stick the folded part that is the balance part of the 14" section above the 3" section..
The main aim of this is to get an Aerodynamic shape for the wings Which is very essential for a plane to lift and glide..

Thanks arun. Got it.

2mm coro is ok for this?

Root stick is balsa or CF. Which size should I look for?

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on February 09, 2013, 12:33:01 PM
Yes 2mm is just enough.. 3mm will add more stability but in my view 2mm is stable enough..
Its just a piece of Wooden piece from local hardware shops..
You can use either Wood, balsa,Aluminium or even Cf

There they are used a CF tube for more stiffness and also for more aerodynamic shape if you have CF tube atleast 4mm or 5mm You can use or use 0.5" strip 2mm coro diagonally which will give some extra stiffness..
Use hot glue for extra quick build

Yea The wings look good now... I have added a vertical strip of coro in the wing for more strenght..
I think it is okay now.. Be sure thet the wings are not bended as in the 3rd pic..
Now make the fuse and tail {:)} {:)}

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: shivela39 on February 12, 2013, 05:19:27 PM
Thanks Arun,

The wing in the picture is 50x12 and 50x3
The first step at 3 inch and second at 5inch. (as per the diagram in the PDF)

The higher thickness of the wing is 6mm at 3inch from the wind front. Is that OK or need more thickness for the aerodynamic shape?

You are right. My first impression was that wing is slightly bending both sides if i am holding it in the center.
should i add additional Coro to overcome the wing bending.

I have cut one more set of wings also. 50x14 and 50x3. Will try this tonight.
Will also try adding 50x0.5 part. It should be fixed in vertical (0.5inch tall) right?

I am using fevicol SR998 to stick the wing and seems to be working good for Coro.
For Tip angle i used Hot glue.

Got wood stick for the root and EPE for the POD. Hopefully should get ready tonight.

You said "not to go in hurry". Now i am realizing how true it is. Thanks man.

Very nice going shivela you are almost there... {:)} {:)}
Take good care when making motor mount and Mount the motor a bit facing downward(1 or 2 degree not more)..
The mount should be very strong and withstand any vibrations of the motor..

dear Arun,

I saw your post in HK.

I need additional receivers for my FS-CT6B Tx. Can you please suggest me the part from HK?

I am planning for one more set of TX/RX. RCB 7x is good to have? I need to have expo function.

You can go for hobbyking receiver mode 2
whihc bind perfectly with Flysky ct6b
And about the Rcb7x Go through the revies in this form.. Which will help to choose..

Whether this one will also work?

Yes the same one..
I dont think the second one will match with it is a 3ch one for ground vehicles.. need Tx like using in rc car, bike ..
Go for that one itself for micros.. only 7gm or so after removing the cover..

Looks like it not supporting the vertical one. Application is rotating the image by 90' to maintain a format. just try and take horizontal ones for upload.

Anyway there has been a very good progress with trainer plane. well done.

Thanks arun &cheluvaraj

Arun, wing position starts from 5 inch from the front as per pdf.

Should I measure from motor mount or from prop.
Motor length is 2 inchs which I have not noticed.

I have already placed the pod at 5inchs from motor base.
 Is that ok?

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span

Dont care about those 2" As the wings are movable we can move the wings later on to correct the CG...
As we are using coro the weights may vary respect to their foam... So continue your work.. CG can be adjusted later on and a glide test will make things more easier..

just a precaution it will be tail heavy... have scope of wing adjustment

2 sheets of coro on tail....!!!! ;)

Title: Re: Home made coro trainer plane 50" span
Post by: arun.sreelakam on February 20, 2013, 11:01:29 AM
Never be a problem for this plan.. As the lipo is mounting in the front end we can adjust that by moving the lipo.. More over another option is there to change the wing position.. So No need to worry about the tail heavy part right now..

any suggestions ?.....

Weight status......

Fuse with POD                        ---- 80   grms
Wing                                     ---- 250 grms
Tail(Not sure)                          ---- 50   grms
Electronics                             ---- 210 grms
(with 3s 800mah Battery)

My setup was with 3s 2200mah...  >:D
So dont worry about the weight that much.. making holes will be good to reduce weight but a crash may bend or broke the fuse faster.. :)

No it is 800mah battery. That is my main worry.
2200mah will add 100gms more.....

I believe i took more care on tail part which caused 100gms more...and my new wing built another 100gms..

sorry but one more question.. which direction is coro flutes facing for wings   :headscratch:

Thanks
