Hi everyone

Was just trying to enter into micro/mini rc. So i decided to make a prototype model from stuff lying around. Will add radio control later. Right now its a simple glider what i intend to make.

Here is what you will require :

Ice-cream Sticks ... Rs 3 for 12
Feviquick(not fevitite as in pic) ... Rs 5
A marker pen
Tracing paper
Cutter
Depron plates

Make airfoil shapes on the depron plates. I made a general shape as it is just a proto.

Cut all the shapes carefully with a cutter..i made 8 four on each wing.

After cutting all the airfoils..you can sand them to match each other...but i was lazy enough to do that. Once you are done with the airfoils,leave them aside for the time being..we will now create the fuse and wing structure with ice cream sticks.

Please be very carefull while cutting ice cream sticks...the proper way to cut them is similar to how we cut a glass. Just use many cutting strokes with small feed depths and then pop them into two.

Cut two ice cream sticks length wise at the middle. I used the max length i could get from one stick. So i now have 4 long half sticks. Take another full stick and cut it into two at the middle but not along the length...alongh the breadth...and then cut these 2 half sticks along the length....so now you have 4 small half sticks.

Cut a slight bevel on the small half stick and join it with the full length one. see pics for clarifications. I used a standard 10 rs cutter do do all the bevelling ans no sanding was done ever.

Similarly ..repeat for all the sticks...please see that the angle is same for all the sticks. I used feviquick for all joining purposes.

Now determine the chord of your wing and cut six pieces of the same length from the ice cream sticks. Join them to the main wing sticks as shown in figure. The pic doesnt show the third stick but you can join it near the dihedral. YOu need minimum 3 sticks or the structure will not be stable

Now after your wing frame is ready...glue the airfoils..i used fevistick for that. Refer the pic.

Similarly complete the other wing and join the two. Make sure to make the join between the two wing halfs strong.

Complete the horizontal and vertical stab on similar lines...

Use tracing paper to cover the frames..

No ankur sadly i havent made any toothpick version. But i intend to make a match stick version with cling wrap instead of tracing paper. May be you can use that too for the toothpick version.

I will start the fuse (stick type...no prizes for guessing  ) soon...

i have made 3 micro planes using toothpick to reinforce the wings and the tail
they also used 2 toothpicks taped together for fuse
<3gms weight... of 1
~5 gms weight of second
~10gms weight of 3rd
the 1st and second have wings and tail made of pakaging of quickfix and idea netsetter respectively
the 3rd has wings and tail of depron/biofoam plates and has been strengthened using toothpicks
will post the pics and other details after my exams.....

so the problem is in making fuse using toothpicks-joining them is hectic
till now i used fuse of 2-4 toothpicks fused together

lets see if any technique works..

Thank you for enlightening us all, while on this subject someone once mentioned painting tissue paper with diluted fevicol helped getting rid of all the wrinkles in the paper as it dried to a taut surface!!!  
Have you ever tried that? IS THAT TRUE, DOES IT WORK??

Above procedure was done to get doped effect as it was not available ...Is dope available there?

We have had some members who make similar ultra light free flight rubberband propelled planes and fly them on indoor meetings.
They wind them and let go... it is a pleasure seeing them climb all the way to the top in circles and then glide down.....

Some have wings with cling film and carbon rods....

In fact I bought an indoor model year before last but still havent had time to fly it properly. Parkzone Vapour; Its made of carbon fibre and polythene bag material instead of clingfilm... I have broken 3 props while trying to fly it in the living room so it has been packed back in the box till I can get to a leisure centre (indoor meeting). Work has preventing visiting one so far.... ONE DAY PERHAPS..

Made little progress with the fuse...the cheap 3 Rs ice cream sticks were not straight enough for the fuse ..so i had to eat 2 choco feasts...have to say..they definitely have kwality ..the sticks were straight and a little thick...perfect for the fuse..joined two of them together.

glued two sticks..for mounting purpose on to the wing's underside...these sticks would then be glued to the fuse.refer the pics.

Glued the wing and the horizontal and vertical stabs to the fuse...

This is what i intend to use as the power system...this is from an old air hogs something..i dont remember the name...my sister bought it for her son..who was too young to fly it..and eventually broke it.

so it was his trash and my treasure

Certain things are done out of deep passion. You don't need others to acknowledge or recognise your efforts, you do it because you want to discover who you are and what you are capable of doing. You do them so that your strengths and weaknesses come forward and look you square in the eye. You HAVE to acknowledge and accept them. It is a process of self realisation leading to self actualisation.

Our Hovercrafts, despite the heavy financial losses incurred, brought Great Guns and me a lot of enjoyment and self satisfaction. We are happy with that. We will give these contests a pass.
