Title: Im a 16yr old who designed this:What do you think?
Post by: MArtins on March 21, 2020, 11:52:53 AM
This plane will have a wingspan of 6’ and a wing chord of 14”. It will be powered with one 1000kv 2830 brushless motor. The fuselage will be made from an aluminium square tube and the wings from thermocol covered with tape. The main wing will have a spar and a polyhedral, and will have the KMF mk 2 airfoil . The tail will have a twin rudder. Hope it will fly. Please feel free to give your valuable suggestions and feedback, and also consider that im a 16yr old.

Wait, a 6 foot stick flier will fly slow with a 8” prop?
Will it give enough thrust ?

Good to see young modelers !

You might have to move ailerons far out to increase effectiveness of it. For 2830/1000 kv motor you can use 10x4.5 prop . I had build similar plane from plans (not my design) you can check it here on rcindia http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/build-log-russ-40-trainer-(quick)/

Good Luck with your build.

Conversation so far (on PMs)

”Could you help me with the wing loading though?
The wing is 6' long, 16" of chord and an auw of approximately 2kg.
Thank you.”

“Hi Martin (?)
Not clear what the question is.
Wing loading is the all up weight of the plane, divided by the wing area.
Usually expressed in gms/dmsq or oz/sqft.
Regards”

“Hello Sir,
I found the wing cube loading to be about 3.9
What does this tell me ? And will the plane fly ?”

1. The WCL tells us that
a) the flight characteristics will be similar to those of a similar model of a larger or smaller size that has a similar WCL value
b) at a WCL value of ~4, it will be very easy to fly (provided of course that it is capable of flying from the design and construction points of view)

2. Will it fly?
Not enough information to make a reasonable guess.
But 6ft span 2kg weight is too large and expensive to experiment with.
Better to start with a design known to be a stable flier (and a pilot with some experience)

Please consider making a smaller version of your design, using balsa/depron, of say ~15” span.
No motor, battery, servo, Rx etc. Just a plain and simple and inexpensive version that can be hand glided / test flown indoors or in a small courtyard. This will help to verify adequacy of tail areas and dihedral, appropriateness of decalage, location of CG etc.

Best wishes for your experiments.

Ok, so im almost done with the build, now I only have to install the electronics and im done !!
And that black line on the wing is a foot ruler !

yeah its nice design...i love it. you use a 1000kv BLDC. i think propeller size is 1045. i attached a thrust test of a 1000kv BLDC. you said wing size is 6ft. so it will take more than 2 kg. and battery, servos, esc, RX, adhesive and Al rod. its take totally more than 2.8kg. but the 1000kv bldc gives maximum 825g of thrust at 100 percent throttle. so both motor thrust is very low. so the plane is very hard to fly or lift or glide. and 100 percent throttle will leads to damage or reduce the ESc's life. so finally i want to tell you, please make sure your calculations, if it is safe design. you can complete your plane. and I'm very excited to see your plane flying. after completion of work. please upload a video or link :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

Actually im using two 2212 1400kv motors and not 1000kv ones , with 1045 props.
So, what is the thrust of these 1400kv motors ?

1045   Prop, 32.8 A (max) , 368W (max), 1080g (thrust) , 2.93g/w
at 100% throttle.  and when we use 80% (max), the thrust rate is maximum 950-980g

i wouldn't recommend 10x4.5 prop with a 2212 1400kv, it can draw higher amps enough to damage the motor in the long run!
i would say go with 9x6 prop at max

i think you should us a 1306 motor on 2s 200mah  cause 2212 may  make your flyers tip heavy

great plane I wish that I could have made it as one of my first planes

On the contrary.
Those who ask questions, if they reveal their age/background/experience, it helps the responders to reply/advise accordingly.

Even more important is for those providing replies to establish their experience so that readers know how knowledgeable the replier is.

I see that the most experienced members rarely respond, unless it’s a very specific query.

New members (irrespective of experience) are the ones who respond the most. Often without any idea if their reply is correct or even relevant.

Perhaps a case of a naya mullah eating more onions...

Before reacting, remember that I can quote many examples.

I have a couple of questions for you

1. How have you fixed the polyhedral in the wings? It doesn't look very strong to me especially considering the size of the aircraft.

2. Are you using a spar? If yes, what material and length is it? Thermocol is generally not strong enough to handle the forces acting on it inflight.

3. How experienced are you with flying? Only fly this if you have experience flying planes. This is a big safety hazard with the aluminium probing out like that.

If the answer to all the above questions is satisfactory then the plane should fly with the given setup if the loading is high enough and the cg is balanced.

I do not mean to demean you or anything, but these are important questions before flight. You have actually built an impressive plane for a beginner.

@Iyer sir, I heavily disagree with mentioning the age part. I think only mentioning the experience should be enough as often times people use their age as a convenient excuse to not do their best when it mostly isn't the limiting factor. I've been guilty of this myself quite often.

Regards,
Nitesh

Hello everyone, replying here after a long while, sorry for that.
I finally decided to ditch the aluminium fuselage and the twin rudder design.I am now trying to build it with a v tail and a very short thermocol fuselage, with the same wing. Will update with the build further .

Hello Sir,
First of all, your first doubt is correct. I wanted to make the wings such that they were more portable, to at least fit in the car, which resulted in me making the polyhedral wing tips detachable, attachable with screws. It seems strongish, but i may make it stronger.
Secondly, I'm not using any spar. That wing is made of two sheets of thermocol, each being slightly more than an inch thick. To strengthen that even more, its covered with tape, and over the years, I’ve found out for myself the even a thin sheet of thermocol covered with tape is very difficult  to break.
Thirdly, sadly I dont know of any experienced, or even pilots, near me. And then there is this covid, soo...
Regarding my experience, i have piloted my own built quadcopter multiple times, and i have also piloted at least 4-5 of my own built planes, which sadly crashed due to either poor piloting or not being built properly. As a matter of fact, i started on my first own designed and build plane when I was just 10 years old.
Thank you.

Hello,
Im back with some sad news. I almost finished with the plane, only to discover that my transmitter stopped working. Now, my parents wont buy me a new one as they say that it will “distract” me from my studies, but they will allow me to buy one AFTER my jee and boards, which may end in April, so yeah ...

Hello,
Due to covid situation the boards have been postponed, and jee may end by May end, so yeah, the wait continues...

Build Update :
Finally , my exams have ended !! What a relief !!
So, I built a new fuse made from thermocol foam.
I will reinforce the wing tips.
Ordered a Qx7 finally after convincing my parents.
Hopefully I'll be able to maiden it soon.
Will keep posting 😁.
