Title: Kaiser Mk 2, from Sharma Models
Post by: sanjayrai55 on August 17, 2014, 08:37:44 PM
I had dealt (briefly) with Sharma Models in the late 80s and 90s. I had bought Balsa Wood, a Diesel Engine, and many props.

I have always had a very high regard for them. To successfully manufacture an engine of consistent, internationally recognized quality and performance, is an Engineering feat worthy of a giant corporation, and here we had a Small Industry based in Jodhpur doing it successfully. As an IIT Mechanical Engineer with 30+ years experience, I know what that entails, and have a very high regard and respect for their engineering skills.

While browsing through their site I came across the Kaiser, and, being a bit "full-up" with corro, wanted to build a Balsa model. So I phoned up Vivek Sharma, discussed with him, and bought it  ;D

Have reached this point now, after starting on 11th August, and spending 2-3 hours a day. I can post a full bild-log, with some "Tips & Tricks" if there is interest.

@sanjayrai55
I know you get up at 5am.
You are either 55 or 59 years old.
So presumably not retired from your day job.
Yet you manage build after build.
I guess like Gusty, you too need only 3 hours of sleep.

But my question is not that.
It is:
Where do you keep all the models?
I don't even have a place to sit.
Except for one sofa left for dad, others occupied by Tiger Moth, Magic, RCTLG, Corsair.
Solo Star and Fantasia on top of fridge.
Trainers on top of bookshelves.
Aermodelling mags from 1947.
Worktable overflowing.
Dining table has to be cleared 3 times a day.
Citabria, 2 Nine Eagles, sundry crates in balcony.
Goldberg Cub unopened since 1996...

Aaargh.
Do you have any space to let for a nominal rent?
Regards.

Don't think i didn't notice the rib capping. Just waiting for tissue and dope. Hopefully.

I give away a lot of models to encourage new flyers.

What saddens and maddens me is in most cases they take the model with much gratitude and enthusiasm, and then vanish  :violent: :argue:

And here i thought i was crazy for wanting to die with models on the side of my Hospital bed, You sir, are much younger at heart then many people i have come across. It is an inspiration to see somebody still building in their later years. (sorry if i made you feel older). :-)

Dear Sanjay Sir,

Wish I too had such space for my models.....  I had to stop after making my third as I am out of space in my workroom.  The bed there generally has aeromodelling stuff on it or a model which needs some attention before flying.  My two models are on the wall and the third will be out for flying on the coming Sunday.  The fourth one, a 5 ft span glider (Guppy) is kept in the loft and the wing was damaged and a new one is in the process... nearly half done.... but it still remains in the loft.  My Balsa and similar other things make my movement a bit difficult in the room.  Yes my two cycles also reside there.

The Sharma's were always ahead of their times when they started to make the Engines.... then came their aeromodels which were way ahead of the ones being sold at that time.... Please read the foot note of my reply and it will tell you more about the Sharmas.... Mr Anand and now Vivek and Vishal are keeping the same flame alight and doing great work... Soon their Metal gear and carbon gear servos will be in the market.

Anyway..... all that is said and done.... I been with the Sharma's from nearly the year 1980.  Was a kid then.... but was with the Senior Sharma whenever he went flying... spent a lot of time with him learning how and what to do..... Later was involved with them when they started shifting from just making engines to models..... I flew the Kaiser (Mk 1) in the year 1983 - 85.  I had that plan with me and recently I built it from thermocol..... Thats the model I prefer to fly more and its been doing great since it took to the air in Nov last year.... Countless sorties and well... heavy landings too....  Its a foam one with a Turnigy 3536/6 1250 KV motor..... with a 4 cell its a rocket and flies like a dream...

See the older Kaiser in the picture me flying it in the local airfield....... Do please note the low slung tailplane as it was in the original design......

Happy and Safe flying......

What a wonderful insight on Sharma's Shobhit. Lucky you, to have had such a great interaction with them

Your thermocol version looks real pretty :D Isn't that a lot of motor for it? My balsa model seems headed for 1100 grams or so, with a 2200 mAh LiPo.

Gusty Saheb can recognize any flying field in the nation  ;) ;)

Well dear Sanjay,

This is not a slow flier.... I do my basic aerobaatics too on it and so I need the motor.... on a 4 cell it gives the right feel of flying a good model....  Yes it weighs over a Kg with a 2600 mAh three cell or a 2200 4 cell lipo i.e. 1200 gms.  Mind you the insides of the fuselage are reinforced with 1.5 mm plywood and the wings have hardwoord spars along with a balsa spar.  Being covered in vinyl (vinyl is very heavy) cost it so much of weight.

By the way.... Sharma's not have excellent Laser cut kits for all their models......

Happy Flying...

(some of the) Deviations from plans:

1. Used 2 X 10 g Metal Servos for the wings. Made a platform for crewing the servos
2. Used 2 X 17 g Servos for Elevator & Rudder
3. Used a steerable Tail Wheel connected to the Rudder
4. Did not used the supplied covering film
5. Changed the anchoring of the main L/G; made it double height
6. Used larger (90 mm) wheels for the main L/G - rough runways!
7. Did not put sheeting at the aft bottom part of the fuse. Feel the ply is adequate

Note:

1. There seems to be a minor discrepancy in the drawing. The Dihedral brace is shown as front of the spar towards the LE in the plan, and in the cross-sectional view it is behind the spar, towards the TE. The rib cutout matches the c-s view, and I have used that
2. AUW with 2200 mAh 11.1 V 3S Lipo is 1130 grams

Kit review:

All in all a most complete kit! After a long time I have got a kit where the manufacturer has been thoughtful and thorough, provided generally clear instructions, an excellent plan, and a comprehensive hardware kit. The laser cutting is very acceptable, he parts have been removed from the sheet (this can be a painful job, especially if the laser has not gone through) and most importantly, the balsa and ply selection is well made and suits the function.

Maiden this weekend - watch this space  ;D :D :D

Oops - one more deviation from the plan

I did not use dowels & rubber bands, but made a bolt-down arrangement for the wing. Looks cleaner and cool, and has an important function: unless you put locators, each time you put the bands, the wing moves to a slightly different position, and that affects the trims

Oh, my Kaiser crashed about 4 minutes into the maiden. The prop came off ( :banghead: :banghead:) and it went first into a tip stall, and then a spin. Landed in a deep hole, and the wing is in bad shape. Maybe repair, or make a new wing (Corro  >:D >:D - 2 hours)

Sorry to hear that sir,
Await analysis.
Did it not transition to glide when prop came off?
CG too far aft?
Wing loading too high for quick recovery?
Guess you'll have new wing ready by lunchtime  ;)
Regards.

Oh my  :o :o Looking to hear more. Curious as Iyer sir as to how the model didn't glide. Happened during roll/turn at slow speed?

Title: Re: Kaiser Mk 2, from Sharma Models
Post by: sanjayrai55 on August 28, 2014, 11:57:37 AM
My mistake, Iyer sir. Impatience, actually.

The prop adaptor of my 3536-1100 had actually partly sheared off some time ago while tightening a nut onto it. My 3536-1250 motor (which I had planned to use) had just packed up -a failed bearing led to a burnout. That was on the Fun Cub, so there was no problem with dead-stick - just glided it safely in a smooth landing. Ordered another, but was too impatient to wait  ;D

So used the 1100 KV motor. The nut was on 1 1/2 threads, glass was half full ( :giggle:) so went ahead. Got hit by Murphy's Law  :giggle:

The model did have a tendency to tip stall, below a certain speed. So had to keep the speed up (noticed this on some scale Piper Cubs too) Maybe needs washout - not too sure. It is a high wing trainer made into a sports by putting the wing below - no other changes.

When the motor went, it tip-stalled, and then went into a spin, leaving me a very very sad spectator  :'( :'(

Title: Re:
Post by: rcpilotacro on August 29, 2014, 08:56:12 AM
Sanjay sir
You are right about wash out. The hand cut kaiser's that I have flown could come to nearly standstill without stalling. Wing tip drop is normal in a stall. For the next wing try low t/c aerofoil for the wing tip. Low t/c has higher stalling alpha therefore tip stall is avoided

Title: Re: Kaiser Mk 2, from Sharma Models
Post by: K K Iyer on August 29, 2014, 12:22:38 PM
Iyer sir: what do these signify?

That the airfoil with the lower thickness/chord ratio will stall earlier
than the same airfoil with the higher t/c.
(At angle of attack about 9 degrees vs about 11 degrees in this example)
Need to check with Gusty sir if this conclusion is correct.

Today morning was flying my Kaiser with Gauravag..... we both were together with our models in the air.... For me it was a new place to be flying at.  After a while I planned to land and was looking out for gaurav's VT Allrounder... and as my model turned for the approach it found a perch on a BIG peapal tree.  Well.... though it was a write off as the model hit quite hard and a big noise at the top of the tree.  Well... ran to the place and saw the model sitting very high on the top of the tree.... Luckily there were some boys there and they helped me... one of then climbed up and shook that branch.  Soon the model fell down.
To everyones surprise it was in good health and did not seem to have even a scratch.  At home I checked the wing... there is a slight damage and I will repair it today... Will be fit for flying tomorrow morning.

By the way friends my history of doing similar things date back to 1982. It is:-
1982 - 1985..... flew into trees twice... both times flying the kaiser with Sharma diesel 3.2 cc engines.  During this period was once flying the Easy Stick covered with decorative wrapping paper and aluminum foil... and flew the model into high tension wires... suddenly there was a bright flash and the burnt pieces of my model were littered all over...
Earlier was flying Gaurav's trainer and came into a landing but decided to go round.... only to hit the lone pole in the entire ground.
AND NOW THIS.......

My apologies to have highjacked this thread of yours Dear Sanjay..... but I am sure you will forgive me for that as most time i did this kind of a thing it was a Kaiser in the air.

Moral of the story..... if you are flying in a new ground look around for obstructions carefully.... always have a spotter for the first couple of flights and never never ever fly two models together for the first flight.
Best wishes.

@kamalsahai@yahoo.com
Should i get an Alsatian or a Pug?
Depends on what you are looking for.
Economy? Performance? Ease of use?
You can get an electric motor of equal performance.
But the support equipment is different.
The running costs may or may not be different, depending on how often you fly.

If you analyse it yourself, you'll know the reasons for your choice.
If instead of analysing the pros and cons yourself, you prefer to ask others, then you'll get advice that may or may not suit you in the long run.

If you had asked a simple question like what is the electric equivalent of a 2.5cc glow, you could expect a factual answer.

Decide whether you want to go electric or glow. Both will work.

Recently made a Kaiser Mk II with a modified fuselage... i.e. just made a nice cockpit and the upper surface on the fuselage.  Rest all remains the same.... will be putting up its pictures soon for all to see...

I been a great fan of the Kaiser and now have both the earlier model and the Mk II with me....

Dear Sanjay Sir,

Here are a few pictures of the Kaiser Mk II in the making... Though by now most of it is already done.  If all goes well.... probably the flist flight will be on this Sunday.  The fuselage is made of Japanica sheet and Blue foam (given to me by Gaurav Agarwal).  The tail surfaces are of Balsa strips and covered with computer paper (balsa sheet 4 mm given to me by Vishal Sharma of Sharma Models) and the wing out of HD thermocol taken out of packing material..... 1 inch in thickness.  Used fevicryl colours to paint it.  The connections, controls and wheels are to be put in place.

OK...... I need some advice from you... You had made the same model out of a kit and then somehow it crashed and the wing broke.  Can you please let me know what went wrong or what do you think was the problem so that I do not repete the same errors and end up in a pile up.  Your advice will be highly appreciated as it will probably same my model on the first flight.

Best wishes to all....
Shobhit

Here are a few pictures of my Kaiser Mk I or the earlier Kaiser (it had the tailplane attached to the bottom of the fuselage).  I first flew a balsa model of this one long time back i.e. sometime in 1983 - 85.  The present one is all of thermocol (fuselage of HD thermocol and wing of commercial thermocol).  Its a semi symetrical wing unlike the one given in the kit which is akin to Clark Y aerofoil.

Title: Re: Kaiser Mk 2, from Sharma Models
Post by: sanjayrai55 on February 04, 2015, 08:48:26 PM
Hi Shobhit

I found the model had to be flown reasonably fast as there was a tip-stalling tendency. This could be offset by introducing some washout. I made a new wing in Corro, without washout, and I just fly it fast.

I of course have a vision problem when the model is a little far, so quite possibly it could be pilot error too ;)

Title: Re: Kaiser Mk 2, from Sharma Models
Post by: shobhit17 on February 04, 2015, 08:54:23 PM
Thanks a lot Sanjay Sir...... I too like my models flying fast and am putting a 3530 NTM motor with a 4 cell to test it.  I am sure it will be a bit too heavy on the gas... Later will reduce it to a 3 cell if all goes well.  The plan recommends 300 - 400 watts of power for the motor and mine is going to give 425 W with a 3 cell and 560 W with a 4 cell.  So lets hope that all goes well.....
Thanks for the input.... will keep the tip stall in mind and not allow it to go too far....
