Hello Everyone!

I with my team are a group of Engineers who have landed into UAV Industry as a profession. Most of our projects are developed for industrial inspection, Mapping and Precision Agriculture. However after being away from the hobby for almost three years (and only doing this professionally) we badly wanted to connect back to the hobby as it was when we had started aeromodelling.

We love Flying and more building our own planes. We have worked on several projects starting with Payload carrying Aeromodel for SAE Aero Design to sophisticated UAVs for GIS Applications. Today as an effort to give back to the hobby in return of what it has given me and taught me during my learning phase, I would like to introduce 'Vector' a Flying wing RC Plane which has been designed by us for fun flying. It has the following Specifications:

Wing Span -  800mm
Max Chord - 260mm
Max Take-off Weight - 800 grams
Stall Speed - 9 m/s
Cruise Speed -13 m/s

Our aim was to build a really fun flying plane which is also low cost and simple in construction which could suit both:

The beginners: For its low cost and minimal investment to get started in the hobby. We believe it is very important that our young ones get involved in the hobby as there is a lot of innovations with this group of people to be expected.

The Intermediate Flier: The 'Vector' has a Flying weight of 800 grams which has enough room to fit in a Gopro with FPV Gear to try new stuffs and explore new possibilities with their models.

All that Said lets see how it flies,
Video Link -

Photo Directory - https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-wBxBwIyRqVZ2dmRFhBZFprbmM&usp=sharing

Build Highlights:
Vector's two piece Wings are produced on a 4 Axis CNC Hot Wire Cutter with 20 Density EPS Foam. Uses two spars at the the centre section. Has a precisely laser cut and CNC bent Aluminium Motor Mount. The entire wing is then Laminated with plastic film which depends on the choice of the builder. Elevons and Winglets are 4mm laser cut depron.

We plan to share Vector to as many fliers as possible and see what people can do with it. To promote this we would like to give out some Vector kits to few builders who would be kind enough to post the build and flight videos here. We request all the interested Fliers to reply to this about what they think about it. We are open to suggestions and very happy to promote the Hobby.

Cheers!
-Pravin

Hi Saurabh,

The power system we have used for the above video is T-motor AT2216 1250kv with 8*4 foldable prop. However we used this only because it was the closest available for the size. This system powers the wing sufficient that it can even fly in moderate winds (I will post the video of the nose camera which records shows the heavy winds). The battery is 1800mah when using a Möbius in the front or 2200mah when using just the battery alone. In this configuration we were able to fly the plane over 30mins with numerous take offs and landings. We have tried to keep a lot of room for trying out various combinations and see what all can be done while having fun with it.

The airfoil used is Fauvel 14.

@pravinp404,
Since I am an untrained amateur theoretician/experimenter, often wondering where theory and practice meet, I'd love the opportunity to talk to real professionals.
May I voice my queries on this thread?
Or would you prefer that I sent you emails?
I am of course presuming that you'd be interested enough to reply. I'd be grateful if you were.
Regards.

Edit:
Sample question. Why is the stalling speed about 50% higher than one would expect from the wing loading? Is it due to the reflex?

Aargh. Sorry. This kind of stuff could defeat the very purpose of this thread.  Bang Head
So no more till you say so!

Hello Sir,

I would be happy to share any knowledge I may have here. When doing engineering we often used to get the same questions weather will we ever use these knowledge. Well not all but some knowledge definitely helpful. But practical experience matters a lot. With experience and common logic you can predict what you could do to improve and what possibly is going wrong.

The stall speed is calculated from the maximum lift coefficient of the airfoil. So depending upon our design cruise speed(the desired speed we want the plane to fly at), Cl max(characteristic of the Airfoil you choose) and wing loading(decided by considering a number of factors like take off method, structural capacity, desired cruise speed, etc) the stall speed can be calculated.

So that is how you calculate the stall speed. The reflex in these airfoils are to account for the Cm (Moment Coefficient) which is usually higher in non reflex airfoils and that is why you need to have a separate empannage to balance it all out.

I hope this answers your question Smiley

PS: I have edited to elaborate my explanation. If you have more questions do ask me, would be happy to answer them.

Actually no, it doesn't.
But I'll stop here to avoid diverting this thread.
Will be happy to receive a PM or email from you.
