If you want to save in the long run, buy the original APM board and get the telemetry kit from hobbyking. You also get the power module with the 2.5+.

Really speaking it isn't the LRS capability that governs the range, it is the LOS and your aircraft range, if you google you will see people have flown to some crazy ranges without drop in RSSI values really (Provided you were within the LOS) |
