Title: Mig-29 - Fulcrum - Electric - Biofoam
Post by: saurabhhsrivastavaa on September 29, 2010, 04:52:26 PM
Hi Guys !!!

Inspired by the design and after seeing the actual model fly (by Angad), I decided to make one for myself.
Wingspan 28 inches (approx)

Here is what I plan to install.

Battery: Turnigy 2200 mAh Nanotech 3 Cell Lipo
Receiver : Assan 6 channel Micro Receiver
Servos : 9 gram servo HXT900 X 2
Motor : Turnigy 2627 Brushless Outrunner 3800kv 260 Watts
ESC : Mystery 30Amps Brushless Speed Controller
Propellor : GWS 4540 or APC 5.5X4

I hope she will do good and look beautiful in the air.  ;)

Would appreciate any help on the coloring part  :salute:... (what color to use... dont have an airbrush... how to proceed etc) (THIS IS BIOFOAM)

A nicely built jet Saurabh,
looks good and the electronics too seem to make it one hellva bullet! {:)} {:)}
Just one question, My mustang weighs approx 750~800gms with electronics, will a 100W outrunner and a 8x4 prop make her a good sport flyer?

Thank you all for all your inputs and compliments.  :)

Appreciate your time looking at the pics. Here are a few more that I clicked today morning.

Ashish, my apologies for not crediting your inputs. :) I have to compliment that you have been extremely supportive and helpful all this while. :D thank you very much.

For the paint, I will try Fevicrly on some waste cutouts first. Since I do not have an airbrush, will see if the brush strokes are visible on the foam. If so, will try some other solution.

Hi Saurabh,

I wanted to know how are u planning to use the motor that you have selected as the shaft in this motor is coming out the wrong side. Isn't it? Also please tell me the type of motor mount you would be using with this kind of motor.

Looks mean and ready to bomb some one ;)

I thought the thrust angle setup for pushers was different from tractors... tilted slightly upwards ?

Do glide tests work reliably on these FAST models, where stability depends quite a bit on forward speed ?

Title: Re: Mig-29 - Fulcrum - Electric - Biofoam
Post by: saurabhhsrivastavaa on October 14, 2010, 09:36:37 AM
Thanks Anwar. !!!

I am not sure of the glide test. But Ashish's Su47 has amazingly low stall speed (inspite of wing rocking) and does awesome alpha and cobras. I am expecting this model to fly smooth and steady. However, stability does depend on speed on such models (unless you have thrust vectoring) :)

Lets see how does she does on this saturday. Will post the results and hopefully the video as well.  ;D

I dont think I have taken into account the thrust angle to be a little up. Its exactly in centre and in the middle of the framework. Do you think its gonna make a lot of difference?

However, I need some info on the CG. Could not find much data on CG for this model. If anyone can help, it would be great. !!!  Will install the battery accordingly.

Hey!! this looks great yar!!!!

now u started to compete me in coloring!!!! just joking!!!!!!!

abt thrust angle, generally it should be little upwords, but in both of my fighters i didnt bother to have any angle, kept it inline with fuse only!!!

lets test it on Saturday!!!! going to be exiting!!!!!

i am also planing go for new SU37, with the help of Agand!!!!

sounds like screaming fighters going to dominate Airoli field!!!!

whoooooorm!!!!!!

Hi Saurabh,

Awsome Build..but had some questions

Which color and method did you use to paint your bird?
What motor are you planning to use on this bird as it doesn't look like the one you mentioned in the begining of the thread?

Also

However, I need some info on the CG. Could not find much data on CG for this model. If anyone can help, it would be great. !!!  Will install the battery accordingly.

The CG Location is 3” rear of the wing break as pointed in the Pic

Hi Hellyflyer,

I have used Acrylic colors to paint. (Fevicryl) or Hobby Ideas from Pidilite. No thinner / additives added/required.
Done using normal paintbrush.

I changed the motor to 2212/6 2200kv brushless motor with 35/35 amps ESC. Got it from FBOTS. Will be using either a 2200mah 3 Cell 20C or a 1600mah 3cell Nanotech.

Absolutely Marvelous build Saurabh. It would be an absolute beauty and would be a pleasure to fly.

Yes a small up thrust being a pusher is desired, but can do without also. Upthrust will give you a good slow speed flying characteristics.

CG is from 2-3 inches from the wing break point depending on the flying characteristic desired.

eagerly waiting for flight videos

Thank you Sandy, Doc, Sharlock and VC.

I have done a little modifications in the paintjob... Now the Pilot Canopy is extended till the tail. This looks really sleek. Will post the pics by evening.

Thank you all for your compliments and suggestions. Really helped a lot. Thanks to Sandy for giving time and guiding over the phone.  :salute:

However, with a 2200mah 3 Cell Lipo, the all up weight is coming about 590 grams  :o  :o  :o
This is way too much from what I had expected.

I tired with a smaller battery (like 1600 and 1300) but the CG goes way back to 4-5 inches from the wing break. She is tail heavy. The 2200 battery needs to be installed right in the front just behind the ducts to get the desired CG.

Any suggestions ???

Hi Guys !!!

Finally today I maidened my bird. She flew great.  Boy-o-boy, she is heavy... :P I believe there is also a lot of drag on the model because I have used 10mm sheet. :headscratch:

All up weight is 605 gms (too much  8-)) That was the reason she did not fly fast enough. However, through the test flight, I did not want to push the motor to its limit. I did that in my second flight though ;)

For a 6 min flight, she consumed 1350 mah at varying throttle. (Most of the times 70%)

She performs really well high Alphas' and the stall speed is extremly low. Does awesome Cobras as well. On the roll she is a little sluggish, though I was using max throws on dual rates. Will have more fun on the aerobatics tomorrow.

I sincerely thank all for providing support and guidance.

Here is the video... ENJOY !!!

Excellent flying Saurabh, great video.  {:)} {:)}

I felt it was flying pretty great even at low speed. Yes 608 AUW is slightly on higher side (culprit 10mm biofoam) but the CG was accurate. I felt since you were flying only at 60% throttle so speed was less. at full throttle it should have been good speed.

Further sanding of aerofoil shape on the 10mm wings will help in reducing drag and improving lift increasing speed many fold (Just rounding off the leading edges and sanding thin the trailing edges is sufficient in place of flat leading and trailing edges of 10mm).

Post by: saurabhhsrivastavaa on October 16, 2010, 07:52:06 PM
Thanks for the compliments Sandy  :salute:

Yes, since it was the first flight, I did not want to push the motor too much. :)

However, I had already sanded the aerofoil on the wings yest, even before this test flight. Still, I believe it needs some work.
I was glad the CG was right at spot. Had to struggle a lot with the batteryto fit in place to counter the heavy tail. Anyways, I guess I am good for the day and will work on her only some time later next week.

Notice the high alpha landing towards the end. Looks tooo cool.. :D

Thanks for your guidance and help. :)

very nice video.. & great plane ;D  like you said 10mm is too thick next time if you build a similar size plane use a 5-6mm thick foam reinforced with carbon fiber rod it will make your plane much lighter.. & will do extreme maneuvers with ease.

Very, very nice Saurabh,

If you build a lighter one, hang on to this one. It doesn't get much better. I flew my F-4 Skyray and the one I modified the wing on. Both are heavy, but handle the wind very well. Go chase those buzzards. They make for good dog fight.

Have fun...Wayne

I really like her looks in the air.  (:|~ Today, after the flight, I have even tapered the edge which is right infront of the prop. Since I am using 10mm, I will have to taper as much edges to increase efficiency. Will check out the performance tomorrow.

The next video better be full of inverted low passes about 10 feet from you :giggle:

Yeah, when mine turn out looking good like that, I hang them from the ceiling and never put a motor on them. Then build another just like it and fly it with no paint!!!!

What would you do if the latter model turned out to be better than the former? lol :giggle: . Its very difficult to make exact replicas.

@ Saurabh bhaiya :  :salute: :salute: :salute: {:)} {:)} {:)}. Hopefully one day i can build models as good as that.

Thanks Angad.  ;D

Infact yest, I changed the ESC of the mig to Mystery 30Amps ESC with Auto Timing.  :)
Now, it does not click click at low speed which I presume was because of timing.
Infact Mystery has a smoother throttle curve compared to HK SS (as you had rightly quoted) :salute:
Guess this 30 Amps should be good enough. Even the motor is not getting that hot now. But the rpm of the motor at full throttle remains almost the same. ESC goes a little warm at full throttle even on running for 30 secs.

Thanks Rohit. It si not that difficult to make these models. All you need are right tools, material and time and patience. I am sure you can make better :)

I am no expert in building such models but still on my learning curve  ;)

Yeah, foam, tape and glue is about what these models were designed to consist of. Then of course the electronics. I think this is the area that scares many away. Most of the designers recommend a 2200kv motor with a 5 - 6" prop. Then it's pretty much balance and fly.

You can go to http://www.downloadzgalore.com/rcplans/ (http://www.downloadzgalore.com/rcplans/) and download the plans to your computer and see what they consist of.

Have fun...Wayne

Well said Wayne :D

Infact the same plan is available there too. Tomhe's Mig 29.

She is actually a great model to build and fly. And if used the correct size (thickness 5mm) and with some aerofoil (tapering of wing edges) and 2212 motor, she will go from as fast as a rocket to as slow as a trainer. A very versatile model indeed.  The idea should be to make her as light as possible.

Hi Saurabh,

I wasn't sure if you used the Tomhe plan or not but knew it was pretty close. I just don't have any luck with 5mm foam. Sooner or later I always walk out of the field with parts of the nose in my back pocket. I have been using 1/2inch Dow insulation board for all of my recent builds, wrapped in clear packing tape. On those I run a 2826/6 with a 6x4 prop. Not as fast as yours, I'm sure, but to me it's the ticket for durability and I still get unlimited verticle. Also here, I have a wind problem over 12 mph/20km hr most of the time. I don't discourage 5mm at all because that's what should be used, but for those that have less flying skills, obstacles around the flying field, gusty winds, or whatever the case maybe, thicker foams will work if need be. You probably seen the posts of short lived "Overpowered pusher jet. I couldn't get any takers to build a Funjet with me, so I turned it into a spyplane. Check it out: http://rcfoamcrafters.informe.com/forum/scratchbuilding-f11/from-the-over-powerd-pusher-jet-to-slow-flyer-glider-t8.html (http://rcfoamcrafters.informe.com/forum/scratchbuilding-f11/from-the-over-powerd-pusher-jet-to-slow-flyer-glider-t8.html)

Final i am able to watch these two videos with max buffering speed.
Nice to see  this Saurabh, which i missed that day.....good work...specially the full throttle, loop. cobra and slow speed fly..was fantastic....well balanced

Ashish : try to use the view finder always to capture the video, this will not only keep the subject in the center of the screen but can cancel the vibration and other heart beat pick up, which is easily noticeable in any video. i know keeping the subject in the view finder is difficult in zoom but you can use your second eye to see the subject and point. if you see my captured video with you camera. you will see the difference.

BTW it was Sushmith taking the video. The viewfinder in my handycam does not work..some problem (only white screen appears) so the only option left is the LCD screen  :(

let me take th opportunity to congratulate you and at the same time commend on your skills and knowledge.  :salute: You are one of the most knowledgable person in RC domain. With the kind of damage to the cessna, I was sure that it was beyond repairs... But you are too good. I like your meticulous build and approach towards the subject.

A true aeromodeller indeed !!!.  :salute:

Congratulations for the repair... This time it will do wonders in air... I can guarantee you that. :D

Nice update Saurabh. I wish I could get some videos mine. I usually go alone when I fly and there's nobody but me and the birds. I haven't mastered video recording and flying at the same time. I tried it a few times and just ended up with the clouds and no plane, so I gave up. Anyway, you did a great job this week, with building, flying and recording. My hats off to you.

Wayne

You have a good cameraman and nice editing also.
I used to take my girlfriend to the field for camera work etc. and she used to be so excited about it. I thought I’d never find a girl like this and married her. Now it’s a totally different story. She is not “RC friendly” any more  :(
