Title: My first Homemade Thermocol RC plane
Post by: soham10 on December 17, 2013, 08:35:19 PM
I am new to this forum.
This is my first RC plane.
I have made my plane with thermocol which is readily available in stationery stores in india.
Covered it with newspaper and mixture of fevicol and water(same quantities of both).
I don't know much about Electronics . ???
Please help me about which electronics I may use and from where to get them. [ P.S. - I stay in Mumbai ]
I want to reduce the price of the electronics as it is my first RC Plane but not compromising on speed or quality.
Thank you in advance.

Here are some pics >> :)

you could think for the cf2822 or 2812
2812 is in stock here http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=93&zenid=vefb0kcck7e5qt96b6sv0m4u40 (http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=93&zenid=vefb0kcck7e5qt96b6sv0m4u40)

@soham good

now the battery i would recommend 1300mah wt = 100g approx
motor go with emax 2805 wt = 50g
choose recommend prop for that motor
esc max 20amp  wt = 20g
ur appox model wt become 220g

most of the items I listed are out of stock but you could always ask the dealer when will they be in stock
and for the battery you should not exceed 1800mah you will get plenty of flight time with that

Post by: rcrcnitesh on December 17, 2013, 09:12:33 PM
any paint which you get in stationery shop
warning paint will increase weight

You can use spray paint for an easy way.... Easily available at car mod shops

I think spray paint damages theromocol  :headscratch:

@soham  http://edallhobby.com/  they hav 2200mah in stock

Do not go with 2200mah lipo. according to your pics the plane have short wingspan. as it is smaller plane, the 2200 lipo will increase the wing loading. will not fly good.

As this is your first plane try to make it light weight.

Ya ofcourse I will post the pics  ;)  @aman

Thanks @swizera ... so which battery should I prefer ? ???

soham,
any 3cell 800 to 1300 mah lipo, will be fine. Which will not increase the weight.

http://hobbysea.com/products.php?9&cPath=11&sid=n5p6n1mpel7tjepj2qf3vmn1u7

this will also work.

i would suggest to go for a 30 amps esc....

n battery 1500 mah should be good.

i would suggest to buy 2 batteries .......u dont want to go to field with just 1 battery...

and dont forget the lipo charger if you dont have one..

NOTE: senior forum members please correct me if im wrong.... :salute:

Hello Soham,
Your plane is too good for first attempt. But do not make/ buy electrics for this plane.

First visit some field and see how the RC plane looks like...... your plane needs control surfaces which are not easy to make.....

i would strongly suggest to first see an RC plane ... give it a second try then buy electrics... cause what you have invested on this plane is <2-3% of what you intend to spend on electronics and transmitter.

the aerofoil shape of wings as seen in pic is wrong..... thickest part of wing should be @ ~ 35% of chord from leading edge. Also you are wrong for the weight as well the airframe you have made must be >100 Grms use a weighing scale + a lot more weight is yet to be added... motor mount, control surfaces, landing gear ( if you want safe landings  ;D), servos , control rods etc etc

and for electrics go for <1000Mah battery and a blue wonder motor with 10-12 amp esc.....for a 1200 mm wing span and <500grm plane.

I think spray paint damages theromocol  :headscratch:
Yes, it will eat through when sprayed over naked thermocol. But since you have covered your model with paper, it should be okay.

Patch up any exposed foam, sand it down smooth and spray it over. I've tried it and it works.

Good luck.

what are the specs of the motor?
without watts,
it can be anywhere from 80 watts to 500 watts. What are the amp ratings?

Soham, buy 2 bottles of fabric paint ( white and red ). It is very light weight and also shiny when some fevicol is mixed with water at 2:1 ratio of fevicol with water. Then dump this bottle full in that. Then, you will be ready to paint and it will look shiny.

please tell me , u used locally available thermocole or any hi denicity material

The best way to strengthen Thermocol is not to add fevicol and cover with paper, but to cover it with thin plastic food wrap(available in stationary stores) This won't add much weight, make it crash proof (mild) and you can easily spray paint it to your colour choice.

Which is best Thermacol or Choroplast.

Thermocol lighter than coro. So for a real slow flier, Thermocol or laminated depron is better than coro.
