Title: Plan Build : 24" Estratos Delta Flywing
Post by: ujjwaana on June 05, 2010, 07:40:28 PM
This is my 3rd plane and second maiden attempt (FA-22 Raptor still in hanger ready to fly)

Estratos is an excellent Slow flyer Delta Flywing, originally world champ Hanno Prettner. He used for a 40 size tuned pipe motor and used  1" flat polystyrene foam with some balsa edges. This was most probably first Fomie ever built.

My plane is based on plan by DaveReap of RcGroups.com
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=434265&page=1

Specs:
Wing Span : 24"
Aerofoil     : KFm2
AUW         : 280g
Material     : 4mm Laminated  BioFoam, Colored packing tapes
Motor        : 1700kv/90W Blue wonder
Prop          : GWS RD 8x3.8
Servos       : 2x5g HXT on Elevons , 9g HXT on Rudder
Lipo           : 3S, 750mAh, 30C Rihno

Airfield    : Hoskote
Maiden and Trim: Mr Ashta
I took over and crash landed around 500mts away due loss of orientation and sight.

I would like to thank Astha sir for taking me for the trip of my life time for a successful maiden under his benevolent guidance. Without his trimming , I would have never be able to fly the plane to crash it later :D

The damage seems minimal, should be up in the air soon   Nice to see the electronics concealed in a box.

Dear Ujjwaana,

Dual Rudders control with single Servo is pretty cool. Never saw such arrangement before. {:)}

Thanks Rao Garu,
Thankfully the extra long - extra light control horn came from HC in record time. The long long arms of the horns really help to have good throw. Below is the video of the full blown throws of the control surfaces.

Thanks I kept my promise I made to myself. Finishing this thread unlike my other two build threads which still needs completion.

This build was more exiting than my other 3 build cuts and, out of which 2 were finally built (F-22 and Blue Baby, 3DBatix Extra 330S still in cut-piece.). The reason being that for the first time I cut the Depron without pasting the printed plan.
Whats more important is that I used my size/Shape for the
1. Rudders
2. Fuse Box
3. The Fins at the Wing span ends
This worked!! as I got encouraging feed back on its flying characteristic by Ashta sir himself!!

It was all measurements with scale, set square and my laser pointer, just like doing geometry in school. I think I need to buy a 'T' used in ED drawing. The plane is much simpler to make if you done plan to put the Rudder and KFm2 aerofoil. Well I always over engineer.

Pic 1: The cut plan
Pic 2: Cut for motor mount (Very imp step in putting right thrust angle, which I messed)
Pic 3: Another view of motor mounting . Notice the Depron spar at TE of 2nd depron sheet for KFM2.

Pic 1: KFM sheet pasted with Glue Gun  and LE taped. (should have beveled  the LE to reduce drag)
Pic 2: Tape Decal at bottom for Orientation (Really ? I can't control my zeal for beautifully finished plane)
Pic 3: Elevon Servos attached with DuBro Servo Tapes. Left panel of Central Fuse (notice the notches)

Pic 1: Both the Fuse panels. Notice I taped it before hand.
Pic 2: Fuse panels attached. The Rudder Servo tray before installation.
Pic 3: Rudder Servo pasted. Right rudder dry fit to ensure alignment.

Pic 1: Rudders with Pushrod links

Pic 2: Debit card pasted to reinforce Depron where Zip-Tie holding motor mount would pass. (This was ineffective as apparent from my crash later)

Pic 3: Using Small clamps to  hold the Debit card as the Epoxy sets

Pic 4:  motor installed and ready for static test!!

<Too late... must sleep....> Thanks for bearing me...

Hey ujjwaana.

It looks great,

THE RUDDER SET WAS SUPERB...............   {:)}

I am also planning to do the same model, may be sometime next month, so i would require your guidance for the same.

Thanks

dear ujjwaana,

Thank you for giving good company that day. I feel very sorry for not to have taken over the control when it flew far away. Some how i did not do it at the right tme.
all the best for the rebuild and u are always welcome to ask me to try it again.
best regards

Dinil, thanks for the encouragement.

RC, you are welcome to see the plane and I would be more than happy to share my experience for your build.

Ashta sir,
The privilege is mine. If you allow, I would love to join you to Hoskote every Sat, but I am not a 'Good morning person and have to push myself real hard to wake up in the morning.

Without the Buddy cable, I think its was virtually impossible for you to help me in that awkward condition. Let me repair the plan and I would bring the Buddy cable next time. There is so, so much to learn from you!!

dear ujjwaana,

as u know, in order to get a decent flying time before sun gets hot and wind picks up, we have to start atleast by 6.45am. You are welcome to stay with me the previous day.
worried about meeting ur expectation knowing very well my limits.

What can you expect a plane which was maidened Ashta - they keep on flying!! Earnestly when I fixed the whole right wing in the field , I never knew this plane would survive this long. Still remember Ashta telling not to retire that plane. that was June last year. Now over 15 flights and half bad landing, with 3major repairs, this plane is still flying. I already had couple of sorties in Electronic City, Bangalore in Nov Last year, and just did few in my backyard  ( huge open space behind my Appt in Kormangla) , I can  still fix the Control horn which came off last flight for the next sortie!!
ing
I would highly recommend this model  to anybody new in flying (and take challenge to learn flying with a Delta Winger insted of plain vanilla High  Winger). This plane is virtually indestructible (KFM2, no CF ) and flies both fast and slow, do all kinds of loops.

Here are few videos from Nov and the one taken today from on-board Cam.

Thanks again Ashta for maidening this plane and giving me a platform to learn flying,

Isn't the nose mounted motor a problem, unless you are flying in fairly thick grass ?

I have flown this plane and even crashed it into water  ;D

It still climbs up when throttled up even a lil. Not a good thing. Do some mixing like throttle to elevator.

you can make that out in all the videos... But a nice plane! Too bad I dont even have any  :(

video is great!!!

@Anwar : I though of putting some skids initially, but out of 20+ flights, I never broke the GWS prop - at most the prop used to get stuck on side with the prop saver band holding it to the prop adapter.

@Vinay: See the orignal video of DaveReap's maiden. This plane does have some tendency of going at high alpha at high throttle. Me putting an over powered motor may also be a reason. Would try Throttle-Elevator mixing next time you come to my flying ground.

@Ashta Sir: Many of us are missing you on the forum as well as at Hoskote. It is always a pleasure to joining you for the fantastic flying session. Are you coming very early these days to Hoskote ? Looking forward to see you on the field very soon and I bet you should have been working a some very exiting stuff all these days, which we might witness there.

AshJr,
Thanks dude. I have been persuading others flying with me to build this so that we can have a dog fight. I tried to do  a mid air with Shrat's MiG, but his was much faster!!

Its not abt motor power, even with lil throttle it was going up.

Thanks Arun for digging this plane which was my mentor - I learnt flying on this creaking plane. I wrote off this plane long back but have helped many to make their own.
Its a damn simple plane one may build in single evening

May be someday when possible, I'd like to take your help Ujjwaana to build one. I'm just trying my novice hand at a few things on flight, I admit am addicted..

Just a thought, should we have a 'flying wing' weekend and the highlight could be "formation wing flying"

Chocks off,
Arun
