Imagine a plane hitting some one at full speed on the motor/engine would be more worse than an acid throw, thats awful! Sad Lips Sealed

I got a nasty thud from a 5x5 prop which had already almost stopped. This was only when I was static testing the motor power/efficiency  and still waiting for my life's maiden real R/C flight (may be tomorrow ).  I recently met a gentle man who got 10-12 stitches due to EP prop and went into phobia not to fly for over a year. And all we are taking about Electric- god alone knows what a 0.56 Glow engine with a 12x8 wooden prop can do!!

Be safe..

Ujjwaana

Agree with you. But electrics seem more dangerous as they are silent and can turn on very suddenly for various reasons  - including an inadvertent moving of the stick.

A running nitro engine provides audible warning to "stay clear".

In my opinion, an armed EP is to be treated like a loaded gun with the safety catch off.

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

I still have marks on my hands from a 450 heli main blade (someone tripped the radio), and a fellow flyer had a major atery severed from another heli incident which required 10 stitches (first heli build).  I have read about at least two people being killed by RC aircraft (both helis, if I remember correctly), and numerous serious accidents (which required hospitalization etc).

As Sushil said, as convenient as electrics are, safety is a paramount concern in this hobby.

"Budapest, May 13 (MTI) - Two people died and four others were injured when a model plane crashed into a crowd of spectators at an international model builders' show at Ocseny Airport, SW Hungary, on Saturday, police reported.

The accident was caused by a 2-2.5 metre-long, remote control model built by a German pilot that went down behind the fence into a group of spectators, organiser Gabor Biro told MTI on site. Two people died, a couple from nearby Szekszard, who had come to see the show with their grown-up children.

Four others were taken to a hospital in Szekszard with slight injuries, the ambulance services said.

It is assumed that the model became uncontrollable due to a technical interference problem, Chairman of the Hungarian Modelling Federation Andor Harmath told MTI." quoted from rcgroups.

How about listing a set of safety rules in this forum that all of us can use. Basically, a list of do's and don'ts from all our experienced modellers. I too have had propellers flying off the motor but luckily with me behind the plane. In any case lets have the do's and don't list compiled and made sticky on the forum.

Freaky looking plane. Wouldn't this plane's flying characteristic not suited for a beginner, what I assume that guy may well have been ?

Even I escaped just with cut on my index finger on the borderline needing stitches, at Jakkur last Sunday. I went with Vinay to fly the Chinese glider I modified with control surfaces (very, very bad idea). The plane was heavy on nose and port side. Rajesh of Rotorzone still some how flew it (marvel!!). Encouraged but with a failed attempt, when I tried pick up the nose dived plane (pusher),  I did not give time enough time for the prop to stop and it hit right on the index finger. Sadly all except Rajesh had left that day so had to first aid 'Desi' way by using my Saliva as antiseptic.

Question : Apart from flying accessories, how many of you carry First Aid kit to field ? at least Spirit (faster clotting/best antiseptic) Band-Aid etc ?

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

It was not a beginner that caused the accident this time, it was an experienced person who lost control.

Many of us have basic first aid kits in our cars, (at least plaster, gauze etc).

BTW, while this incident reminds us about the safety aspects of flying, let us not forget that RC is in general a very safe hobby; such incidents should not be construed as reasons for scare-mongering about the hobby in general. To put things in perspective, some thing like this could have happened with Bajaj M80s !
