Title: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on May 17, 2011, 08:42:37 PM
This has already been attempted by one of the member here.

Now I am going to give it a try.

Rcpowers Extra 300
3mm coro
4*9gms hxt900 servos
motor: 2210N 1000Kv Brushless Motor+GWS9050
Battery : 610 mah rhino 3S
cycle spokes for push rods
The elevator alone has a coro hinge

Kalyan whats your idea about the servos installation.
I am planning to put the elevator and rudder controls close to the tail. what do you think?

I am planning to use one servos for the aileron controls and very confused where to put the servos man. The aileron control horns needs angle since I am using only one servo so I am not sure about the angle. Which is the best place to put the aileron servo on the top or bottom?
Can you tell me about your power plant

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro

Fixing with double sided glued foam tape with coro. keeping servos near to wing end. just behind 6" from aileron servo.
Making Motor mount with coro fixed with screw, nuts & washers with fuselage.
Making POM Horns with steel wire.

Motor Emax CF2822 ,
1060 prop
Turnigy Plush 25A ESC
9gm servo- Aleron-1
5 gm servo - For rudder & Elevator.
Turnigh 1AH, 3S 25-35C battery.

But I have no power plant ;) .

can you post pics of how the motor is mounted...!!! :headscratch: :headscratch:

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on May 24, 2011, 11:41:44 PM
vish I used hot glue gun to glue everything. The motor mount is made of two square coro sheet with flutes perpendicular to each other sandwiched between two pieces of sim card plastic. I used tooth picks with rubber bands to mount the motor and inserted a tooth pic in an angle to get the motor faced down and angled to right just like dave said  ;D.

here is my completed plane waiting for maiden.

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on May 24, 2011, 11:46:34 PM
all the electronics are sticked using double side tape and the battery is sticked and then ziptied. I used re-inforcement for the front fuse and the place where the battery is mounted.

All the control rods are cycle spokes. Notice the aileron control rods are angled first then turn straight to the reach the aileron horns.

I am sure you can build it better  :giggle: .

My doubts.
1. How can i make a perfect z bends I always end up getting more space for the servo arms to play.
2. How to launch it ?

:headscratch: Anwar are you telling the use of coro motor mount is new or the rubber band style is new  :headscratch:. The rubber band style with the tooth pick is followed by many. I saw that from rcpowers dave's videos(he is my role model ).

. The second link needs that clamp unit(I dont know its exact name).

its called a bench vise(or wise) if u in to nitro u will compulsory need one....

i am into nitro and not in electrics yet the thing i asked you for the mountin and the plan was i am planning to get into electrics(gathering some knowledge) and was always curious on how a motor was installed in a plane like the above and pusher jets...!!!

thanks for the photos..!!

Me and sreedhar did the maiden today. Didn't had a camera to video it. Wow cool plane for flying. If you are starting scratch building this is the easiest and forgiving plane. Can be build within 3 hrs. It flys awesome. Broke 2 props :( and the motor mount came off during a crash when I tried with a smaller prop(Just one more flight attitude). Will post a video of the second flight next week :).

and more :D

It rained 3 times during my two flights. It crashed at the end of this video. The aileron control arm came out of the servo(could not put the screw :( ) and I lost control in mid air, Came down spiraling down. Guess what no damage to anything. Everything was intact even the propeller.

Yes sreedhar. Changed the battery to 1000 mah, propeller to 10*5 and importantly a better prop saver :D. Not like the last one which broke 3 propeller: D. Now it flies at half throttle, Motor doesn't get hot and doesn't break the propeller when it lands

Aaall is well!  :goodjob:

BTW, you haven't used any wing reinforcement like carbon rods, have you? Or have I missed that? What is the weight of your motor, any links? What happens if this baby is powered with a higher KV motor?

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro

Motor 2210N: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=8621

GWS9050 @3S
Max Amp: 11.2A
RPM/Min: 8700
Thrust: 740g

This motor has max current rating as 11.2A. With your earlier prop being 9050, you were already hitting this limit. Now, since the prop dia is increased to 1050 won't the current draw also increase, resulting in a potential motor burn under sustained full throttle?

Better prop saver ? Could you provide links to your previous and newer prop saver ?

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: KALYANPRODHAN on June 05, 2011, 02:30:53 AM
In electrical engineering "Load is the king". As you oversized the prop, the load requirements fulfills in lower throttle position. Now, if you give full throttle, it can burn.

Prop changing change the  operating point only, but not the load.
Load will increase if you keep the throttle in same position. More air volume/Sec.

So, as long as you not fly at very fast, you are saved.

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on June 05, 2011, 08:23:41 AM
changed to 10*5 cos of the added weight of 1000 mah. previously it was 500 mah But still the motor just seems to be warm after a 5 min flight ???. The amps measurement came to 12.47 amps during bench test. Will be shifting back to 9*5 for next flight :).

A better prop saver:
previously I was using this
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10908

It is too small for this shaft so I drilled it using a drill bit and fitted it. Then The shaft was too long and didn't allow the prop to slip out when it hits ground so it broke a few props in hard landings

Now I am using the prop saver which came along with this motor
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5687

fits perfectly and allows the prop to slip on hard landings.

Planning to put landing wheels. I have this
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5211

It would be a tail dragger. Dont have a tail wheel so planning to but a strip of plastic or coro replacing back wheel.

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: KALYANPRODHAN on June 05, 2011, 09:53:56 AM
Better use higher KV motor with smaller prop. The prop damage chances would be less if you make zero throttle before crash landing.

Do you have wing reinforcement ? I have it with bamboo strip.

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on June 05, 2011, 10:43:49 AM
Ya I goto zero before landing. Yes I have a 3mm carbon fibre tube as wing reinforcement But needs some more reinforcements.

Landing gear.

where to put it ???

As in pic 2 close to the motor

or

as in pic3 at the back of the aileron servos

Both LG locations should be fine as long as the wheels stay before the CG. However, I would prefer having the LG closer to the motor to avoid prop hit or a cartwheel

Thanks VC  :hatsoff: . Next I am confused either to make a new one and put all the electronics under the fuse and color it or removing the electronics from this one and fix all the dents and tears, then color this one itself. It has taken lot of crashing still ready to fly. I love this bird.

Title: Re: RCPowers Extra 300 using 3mm coro
Post by: azhaguvel on June 09, 2011, 07:05:31 PM
I had a crazy Idea but it worked.
The landing gear is made of cycle wheel spokes. I used ear buds tubes to hold the wheel in place. First inserted a small tube so the wheel doesn’t rub the inner side then inserted the wheel, then again more tube so that it won’t come out. After that I used flame from a cigarette lighter to shrink the ear bud tubes. It was a perfect fit and tubes are almost molded with the spokes.

The flaps really help this model during landing and as agu bhaiya said, it is so easy to build but flies like a charm, if someone is building his first plane, I strongly recommend to try this one, chances of failure are almost zero. The plane just sits in the air, so easy to control.  :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

Indeed it's really a cool plane. flaps, Cool you have 2 servos on it. Can I have a sneak preview :P. What material did you use rohit?

Dont have a exact weight measurement. But mine should be around 500gms.

Oops sorry agu bhaiya !!  Yes I have 2 servos on it. I will surely put the pics and video on, was busy updating my website and on some college project so didnt have time. Anyways, the material I've used is 5mm biofoam, supported the wings by bamboo sticks(the ones put on kites) , put some radium stickers on and thats all(kinda an experimental project), for the effort that I've put in the rewards are truly amazing. I'm planning to build another one with a more scaled appearance and a good paint job like the one on my scratch built cessna(thats why I devoted less time to this one just to check its performance and the advantages of having flaps/spoilers, etc ). But that is coming after another build that I have in my mind, won't disclose it now.

 :iagree: ankur .

@ prateek

Prateek I had one person for help and used set squares to keep it perpendicular. I used hot glue everywhere. I have 3mm carbon rod running through one of the flutes of the main wings and the Elevator. The hinges are all packing tapes. Motor mount is described in the link anwar has given.

Prateek don’t waste time figuring out. Just start building you will see what to do. It’s very easy. If you go wrong just dump it and start a new one :D. coro is dead cheap. You can make 2 planes out of one sheet.

Maybe someone could market an ARF kit of this Coro Extra 300 with all electrics and battery included. Should contain all push rods, servos, control horns, motor and prop. Just assemble, add your own Tx/Rx and fly! Good idea, ain't it?

I would love to buy one, how many other takers would there be? :headscratch: ???

Are you young entrepreneurs reading this? ;D

Azhagu, can you post some pics of the reinforcements that you did? I can see that Rohit has used a lot of reinforcements on his Depron model. I guess a coro model would need more especially to keep the tail from wagging.

Infact, I have used four bamboo sticks(and also used these to make the training gear!), one for the elevator control surface, 1 for the surface to which the elevator is attached , one for the wing and 1 that goes along the fuse(3rd pic reply 69!), these make the plane strong enough! Secondly, I also want to make a point here, the first day i tried out, the plane had this huge wing rocking, infact the wings collapsed in a roll. Then i sanded the leading edges, and the wing rocking has absolutely vanished! Even i was amazed, because i never expected that there was such a simple solution to the problem.

What would be the approximate weight of these bamboo formers?

When made out of Coro, without fuselage, especially empennage, reinforcement, the entire tail section is going to wag and flex. This is evident from Azhagu's 2nd. video as the model takes a sharp turn at 0:15 - 0:20 second mark. What I am surprised at is that inspite of this empennage (tail section) flex, the model flies so well!

I'll let you know the exact weight, but its very very light and very good, moreover they come for free! Kalyan da gave me a whole bamboo cylinder(hollow)(about 3 feet long) cut into two semi-cylinders, and i just cut out sticks of desired thickness, and its very easy to cut longitudinally, just take a knife and run through, it will always cut in a straight line.

Hi rohitgupta322, I must say this is a good build plane, I got yak45 from techone, the material is so so so bad, everything arrived twisted from the courier, seemed the material dosnt have a strange of its own.

your plane looks strong and thick, how thick is your material ?

Hey thanks, my biofoam sheets are 5mm thick, but they are very sturdy, specially after the bamboo reinforcements.

@VC
Sorry for the late reply was busy for sometime
I dont have any reinforcements except the 3mm carbon rod running through the flutes of the main wing and the elevator. gave some reinforcement near the front of the fuse with 2 pieces of Coro sheet. Yes the plane flexes a lot but then it fly very well.

@rohit
Cool plane. flies great :) . Wish I could get my hands on some biofoam.

You may buy a pack of ten sheets of biofoam. Ashok bhaiya(foamybuilder) might still have them for sale. Even I purchased my biofoam sheets from him.

I guess it somewhere around 600 - 700 gms. Same they call it as coro only. You can get it in any advertisement shop. A full sheets cost only 140 Rs.

@Rohit
I dont need 10 sheets :P. Trying to get some 2 or 3 from my bro living in chennai.

At last found a Foam source in Trivandrum. Guess trivandrum is not bad place for RC hobby after all.

This place has high density thermocol of all dimensions from big to small. I found few sheets of Biofoam of 12 mm and 4mm thickness(They seems to be old stock and the owner said the stock will arrive in a month or so) and ofcourse the widely available coro only 3mm.

Hey,
Your twisting fuselage of coro Extra300 without reinforcement (Except carbon fiber wing reinforcement) made Hesper twist resistent with carbon fibre.

Now you just use polyester thread (0.5mm dia that can take appx 50 kg weight, found in roll pattern), stitch with needle with end flute reinforced even with broomstick 2 nos to tide with, with keeping tension equal, and then just wet it with CA. Let him dry.

YAHOO,  your carbon fiber reinforcement will be made. Just check first in spare coro fold.
You see, this don't work with compression/bend, but tension and fixed with CORO too.

I am thinking this idea for anti twisting feature incorporation in single side wing with coro.

Just watched now and cannot restrict myself to point out and giving you my idea. It uses only bottom portion. But I recomend to use top and bottim too, like spiral as your Stick ;D will be white. I was looking sometime for fixing points, which Hesper directly pointed. Oh GOD, you are so grate.

Thanks everyone.
