Title: Resurrection of Fantasia
Post by: K K Iyer on October 07, 2014, 09:54:54 PM
Hi all,
Two years ago, i got an ARF Fantasia from a Hyd LHS.
Had lot of problems.
Finally got it to fly,
After changing Tx, Rx, motor, prop, ESC and one servo!
Pics from Dec 2012, early 2013

Edit: An RTF, not ARF.
Had to replace the Lipo too!

Later in Oct 2013, crashed due to pilot error.
Low light, late evening.
Low height.
Cuban eights at low height, forgetting ailerons were on high rate.
Half roll intended became full roll unintended.
Hence pull out meant dive in at full power.
Salvaged smashed parts.

Repair started in Oct 2013.
But went into cold storage.

Never took it off the top of the fridge, as many other things happened
Like retirement, daughter moving to USA, shifting house, dad hospitalised in Pune, son's marriage, 5-6 other models etc.
Went to Ahmed's house for Eid yesterday. Saw that he had rescued his father's 90% complete Curare. Inspired by that, he has nearly completed a 36" foamy version, with anhedral tailplane and all!
His workmanship was so nice, i decided to resurrect my Fantasia, an old time pattern lookalike!

If both of us complete our projects this week, we will hopefully fly in formation this Sunday!

Wish us luck!

@v2 eagle
Ashok, you have an eagle eye!
Originally with DT700. Never ran. Later found bad solder in lead.
Still have that 700. Changed to 850. Was enough, but now runs rough, probably due to crash.
New motor is courtesy Vishal Rao of KineticHobbies.

Hope the 750s i sent were ok!
If not, send me a pm for money back!
My test results were on stickers on the motors.

What could possibly go wrong with Iyer sir hands.
runs smooth and good. almost completed the Tricopter. maiden in a day or two.

My amp ratings are closer to the sticker values.
Made a DIY VA meter and using it to calculate the total watts. a simple VA unit like this and a pair of XT 60 connectors and a single cell lipo lying around.

Done!!! all boxed safe and well in the box that you gave along with the motors(Wont spare anything that comes free..boxes, thermocole, card boards, zip pouches, bubble wrap...) works great for less than 300 rupees excluding the LIPO cell. my guess is a single 9V cell should last a life time instead of a Lipo cell.

A noble mission Iyer sir!

I didn't understand the bit about the Tx, Rx, Servo etc. though. Isn't it an ARF as stated, or is it an RTF/PNP?

Pretty model, nonetheless

I thought sanding foam would be easier than sanding balsa.
I was mistaken.

Pattern ships should not look ragged.
Will try to refresh finish before flying.

Nice clean restoration. :goodjob:

The trike is missing from the models that delayed the restoration. Anything built with the ripstop? Waiting for the same. (:|~

Iyer saheb,

I forgot to mention the secret of carving the foam, it is a mini wood planer with regular razor blades (7 O' Clock type). Much easier than sanding.  :)

* after thought - wih Mr Iyer appreciating my workmanship .. I must have really done a good job!

Monokoting foam is not easy.
Especially if the Monokote is very old and you have not worked with it for over 10 years.

Vinyl is a better option for foam. But then, you already know that sir ;)

Finally done. Though the finish is rather poor.
Very windy today. So waited till past 6pm to test fly.
Lovely. Did two circuits, two loops and two rolls, then landed.
Full trimming next Sunday.
Attached is a short 12 second video of the maiden launch.

Hi all,
Two years ago, i got an RTF Fantasia from a Hyd LHS.
Had lot of problems. Finally got it to fly,
After changing Tx, Rx, motor, prop, ESC and one servo!

Last Sunday the other servo (elevator) failed. During outside loops from inverted.
Damage not too bad, all things considered.
Have to rebuild the nose once again though!

Better fly the Magic this Sunday.
Oops. That requires a nose job too.

Or just stick to (new) Old Timers perhaps...

Minor damage, considering. Should be a relatively easy repair. Some steam and glue

That Depron Old timer sure looks neat.  {:)} {:)}

May be a bit more wing area would have served well. Or is it the perspective making it look smaller.
