Hello folks,

Came across this build on rcgroups, this guy has built 70 / 90 & 120 mm edf mirage 2000 very successfully and its the most scale mirage build i have seen yet. Also has flight videos. But whats important is this new technique i learnt of bending foam with heat.

Rcgroups thread 1: 70mm edf
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1187662-Mirage-2000

Attached some photos. The plans are in the threads, I used the 64-70mm plan and enlarged by 10% to have slightly more wingspan for better flying at the cost of slight weight ofc. AUW is about 700 grams painted with all electronics, 70mm 12 blade FMS Edf, 80A Esc and 2 metal gear servos + 1 nylon gear servo for Rudder. No landing gears. Flying weight is about 970g.
I had fun building this Mirage and absolutely love the scale looks. Whats more surprising was the maiden flight, balanced right on the cg and needed 0 trim, Flies like a dream. Can fly really slow and also crazy speed at full throttle, although my aim wasn't to build a fast jet (i have lots of other fast jets) I wanted this one to fly slow and to be able to do more scale sport flying. Best part is the edf unit puts out near 1500g of thrust (rough test on weighing scale)  and it hand launches my near 1kg model no problem Cheesy  I Dont even have to go full throttle on the launch.

How to bend Depron / Biofoam:

Maiden flight:

Slow & low passes  (Windy day)

Re maiden post paint

Attaching some more build photos in below replies.

Cheers & happy flying!

What a genius design isnt it? Such a simple build actually, not too much of sanding work not too many pats to cut out and glue. Once i got the hang of how to bend the foam rest was super easy.

I did not have hot gun so for small parts i used hair dryer and for bigger parts i just moved the foam piece over gas at very low flame lol but much much away from the flame. so i heated the foam on gas and bent it as per recommended  Giggle

Aquif good to see u on the forums here Cheesy

I'm planning dr mad thrust three colour led afterburner ring Cheesy Was going to order but it was out of stock, the colour changes as your throttle increases, but then landing gear is also missing and in all this bargain i will have to do a little operation and fix another 6s edf setup  Giggle

What are the flight characterstics .  Do you have to land it fast or can it land slow and also is the takeoff speed high?

Hats off Nakul... Hats Off Great work.... I am also working on a EDF jet though the setup is on its way to INDIA.... Just was curious enough to know what setup you used for this jet? The lipo capacity, c rating , esc config, flight time, rough stall speed and the flying experience . Please share some info with all of us..  Smiley

Thanks Khushahl,

Edf unit is = FMS 12 Blade 70mm edf 4s version (there is also 6s version which gives about 2.2kg thrust)
skywalker 80A Esc
Zippy compact 2200mah 4s 60
Turnigy Nanotech 2200mah 4s 75-130c lipo

EDF pulls 70A at full throttle. bigger lipo's will be able to provide more amps but 2200 just fit fine on my jet and balance perfect.
I did lot of research on edf units and found out that FMS is a very big brand and they have really high end edf jets and they use their own edf units on their jets, so i was like i might aswell order one of their unit which is tried n tested.  They claim thrust to be about 1600g but it is near 14-1500 grams for sure on 4s, you can watch in above videos how i handlaunch the jet so effortlessly.

I haven't noticed complete stall on this jet, only once after vertical hovering (this jet can do vertical hover for few seconds) past that due to no thrust vectoring the control surfaces don't work. so practically u can slow it down in wind to zero and it won't fall down form the sky haha. See video below. All i can say is this is a dream jet to fly, it flies just as good as it looks, at near 1kg AUW it glides amazing, u can actually watch the repainted maiden video where i take 3 approaches to be able to land as it glides so far haha, well u can always stall it or slow it down by elevator input. Smiley

Hope this helps & all the best with your build Smiley

This mirage flies unbelievable. It can be flown fast and slow, u can slow it down in high alpha mode to an extent that it will hover vertical for few seconds (see video below)
When u go full throttle its super fast just like any other edf jet (but not even close to my funjet ultra, efxtra etc  Giggle )

Windy days are perfect for slowing down the jet against wind pulling elevator stick down. There are no interlocking parts and you are relying on surface to surface glue to hold it all up so i do not recommend landing the jet in high alpha mode and stalling it, i recommend adding foam skids like i did and do a scale landing and let it slide

Watch landing ont his video:

Plans attached, please note i printed these plans at 110%
i wanted slightly bigger size jet, you can scale your plans accordingly, i wanted to do slow scale flying so i went for slightly bigger size, or it would be over powered and fast all the time.

Cheers!

Thanks Nakul for the detailed reply and wishes. The more I see your videos, the more inspired I get to build one of these... Smiley  What model would you suggest for a first time EDF build? I had red arrow i.e. BAE HAWK or a YAK 30 in mind due to their trainer configurations...
