Title: Scratchbuilt P51D Mustang with 5mm BioFoam
Post by: Sumeet on January 09, 2011, 01:59:51 AM
Hello Friends...!

I have been working on a P51D Mustang...

And now it is about to complete.
All made up of 5mm BioFoam.
And "Fevical decoration Glue" for gluing.

The specs are:

Wing Span: 33"
Wing Area: 220 sq Inch

AUW would be around 500gms.

Going to use following electronics:(All ordered from Hobbyking and became a platinum member. Ha Ha  :giggle:)

Turnigy 1000mAh 3S1P 20C Lipo
4x 9gm servos(two for ailerons, one one for Rudder and elevator)
Hobbyking SS series 25-30A ESC

And HK 2.4Ghz 6Ch Rx/Tx to fly it.

I need the suggestions of all the experienced aeromodellers for which motor should I use?
Please suggest me with a link.

And below are the photos showing my progress from day 1...

Pics Showing the rudder servo...

And the last one "DSCN2238". showing the Wing with a slot to see through. So, the beginners can guess what I did...

First I made 5mm Bio foam spar and reinforced with carbon fiber rods. Then skinned the whole wing frame with 5mm bio foam(This was the toughest thing in this project for me). So, It is more stronger on a compromise to have more weight.

Please note that according to the original plan. Wing was supposed to be skinned with 3mm Foam sheet which is not available in Indore. So, I used 5mm.

More photos of wings...

For the information...

I redesigned the wing to get the proper lift and smaller stall speed so i could also fly it slowly to teach myself and my Brother. I used Motocalc 8.0 for the Airfoil design.

The wings are semi symmetrical with a 0.75" Spar inside wing.

Here are the photos when I mounted wings on fuselage for the first time to see the appearance.

One thing may have been noticed that the Original P51D Mustang is a lower wing aircraft. The Lower Wing aircraft is supposed to be unstable in the air as said by Vikas sir when I went to their place. Thank you Sir.

Anyways, So I shifted the wings slightly upwards. Now, It became a Mid Wing. The proposed places where I am going to mount the battery pack and ESC then came under the wing and thus giving the Higher Wing type performance.

Fuselage profile and Wings are completed. The rudder and Elevator servos are mounted.
So, I started to cover the profile with bio foam itself. The original plan shows the fuselage skin is 3mm Foam. But that was not available so, Sliced  :giggle: the 5mm Bio foam to get its half thickness. It also became easy to bend the sheet according to the original Beautiful P51D fuselage.

The fuselage skin is cut and glued in parts according to each profile section. And to secure and prevent the skin from peeling off, I used the tape which I know as medical tape (Those white one self sticking tape which is used for dressing) So, I won't have any problem while painting it with Acrylic Colors after completion of this beauty.

Some more pics on the fuselage skin.

In last picture, the rudder and elevator servo leads coming through the skinned portion to the place where the Rx would be fixed...

WOW great efforts!!!!!

for motor try using 2212 with lower Kv say 1200 or 1500 kv, available with RCtimer. cell count and ESC seems to be good for this model!!!

wish all the best !!!

As per ashJR7202 suggestion: I found the motor specs as follows:

Model:  2212-10
Motor size: Ф28*26mm
Shaft size: Ф3.175*37mm
Weight: 50g
KV(rpm/v): 1400
Max Power: 205W
Battery: 2-3Li-Po
Test Prop: 9x4.7/7x4
Ri(M Ω): 0.078
ESC(A): 30A

Now plz suggest me the appropriate propeller for using with this motor. I need the Thrust to weight ratio to be greater than 1:1.

great job....which material is this. is this fly

It is Bio foam. When you sand the biofoam with sand paper, you will see the powder as the result unlike the thermocoal, which disperse in very tiny balls when scratched...

abt prop, try using suggested one!! 9x4.7. but i think even 8" would be fine!!!! abt 7x4 as mentioned in the spec will give little bit less thrust but will give more flying time!!!! so for experiment try 8 & 9 both type of props.

2212 is really nice motor, get lower kv and use it in 3d foam planes upto 34-36" wingspan!!!!!
get higher Kv and use it in 27-30" foam jets!!!!! it is all rounder motor for most electric planes!!!

cheers
Ashish

@ foamybuilder

Please read post#4 on the first page of this topic. I shifted the wings to make it more stable.

@ashJR7202

Thank you so much for the compliment.
BTW I am using Hacker Style 20-28M Brushless Outrunner motor with GWS 9x5 propeller.

i wonder what happened to this beauty ?  sumeet did it fly

Title: Re: Scratchbuilt P51D Mustang with 5mm BioFoam
Post by: Sumeet on August 26, 2012, 06:29:17 PM
Oh Yes sir.....It flew.
However that time Monsoon was strong and wind was crazy. Around 30kph I guess. I tried taking-off from ground few times. But it didn't. I mean sure it was problem in my flying, not in this beauty. It rolled left just after I pulled throttle. As I was not familiar with motor torque those days, I just tried adjusting tail gear again and again. LoL. Then done a brief research and found the real cause.

Then Once I just faced it Upwind, tried a hand-launch and it went in the sky without any problem. Wind was crazy....though it flew great. I learnt the use of rudder and aileron together on this beauty. Even i can say...I learnt flying on this beauty. Broke a lot of propellers.....Flew many times till it had No-cowling on it at all. I can bet it can still fly.

Now it is retired after its glorious service.  :giggle:

Actually, I pulled everything out of it and made it static. It currently hangs on my window. When somebody comes...I let them have the honour to adore this beauty. Looks speeding-up even when it is sitting still.

God.........I love this plane.

Oh And By The Way.....Those pulled parts....were used in my STS trainer. That flew good too.

Thanks for asking sir. I really Appreciate. It reminded me of those golden days.

Thanks a lot.
Cheers.
