I have some good brushed motors(35000rpm at 12v) left over from some of my old robots.. I am interested in using them for a coro build/homemade truggy.. But I cannot find a suitable esc in my budget Is there any way I can make one of my own that has reverse and can handle upto 40amps? I have googled it but could not find one that uses locally available ICs I have basic knowledge of electronics but I want one without microcontroller..

It can handle upto 250A. I am looking for a cheaper and simpler alternative with reverse.. A capacity of only 40A will be enough!

I have searched the forum but could not find any controller that suited my needs perfectly. Could you please point me to the thread you are talking about? Any reversible brushed esc design would do that does not use a micro-controller. Size , weight or max amps does not matter!

It's not the buy. Only the parts cost. As, my labor charge is huge.
Bi-Directional is Easy.
Just you need to use Bridge method instead of freewheeling Diode.
And, you have to check 1.45-1.55 mSec as dead zone or whatever you wish.

A good step by step design is here. But small problem you can face for feeding receiver signal through Capacitor if your electrolytic Capacitor value is not perfect.

Friends.. i stopped posting on the thread of ESC, not because of any secrets.. but, after starting my postings, i saw ample of circuits related to the application.. each and every one of them, are much complicated and far beyond reach of a modeller who is not advanced in Electronics... so, i came to know the value of my simple circuit, for the ESC with reverse, then, i decided to get a patency, for it, not on component layout, but for circuit application.. the patency, is not for any monitory benefit, but, i proved my circuits are best in application, but too inexpensive and easy to make and to apply.. now, the same circuits powers my all crafts, for hours, and it from small to biggest, ( 5 meter long ships), is serving one of the Prestigious Institution of our Nation.. so, after taking the patency, i will hand over it to the Academy, not for money, but as part of my dedication to the Academy, the Academy, who gave me wings to fly, and gave me a golden opportunity to serve my Nation, through my modelling ability.. so, i excuses for a little more time, to share the circuits here, because, i already applied for the patency, for it, along with three more circuit layouts, for model making purpose, along with two handy machines that helps our Farmers, as coconut peeler and one hand pump, can operate with hand crank, without any hard excertion, pumps a good quantity of water, and it recharges a 60 Amps car battery while in operation, then can use this stored battery power, at night to light the farm.. so, i hope this goodies will help my Farmers a lots.. ( still my solar lanterns helps them much..) 
so, i will start a new article to make an ESC with reverse, wthout any complicated circuits and micro controllers, at starting, then can go for advanced and complicated layouts.. so, hope it may help all modellers once.. to my life, there is no secrecy, and anyone can come to my home, any time, but never expect a star facility, here, because i am living in a little home, made by me myself, and my home is a pure junkyard of scraps and models.. even today morn, i got ample of shouting from Maaji, as she stepped over an empty super glue bottle.. and so happy, that many of RCI members are my Friends, and visited me here in my home.. got some great friends from RCI.. so we are going to make a simple but effective ESC with reverse.. as simply to advanced..

yes.. lots of boats, ships and cars.. but not tried with aircraft, because of the high cost of the light weight and flexible solar panel..so, hope some of my Friends to sponsor it..

Thanks roopeshkrishna! Your posts are very interesting and informative. But the problem is that I have tried to build a electromechanical speed controller but it does not suit my needs. Moreover adding a dpdt relay to reverse the motor directionis taking up more space and ruining my weight budget. Do you or any of the forum members have a design for a completely solid state brushed speed controller with reverse?

1. why do you need reverse in a plane as you mentioned coro sheet in the start??
2. Still if you wan to go for it search EBAY you will find brushed speed control 20Amp with reverse. 11$ free shipping. I've used it it is good. better than doing it yourself.... cause you will not get all required in a ckt.

Last.. if you fix the electromechanical ESC to a craft, in such a manner, that with proper hardware, it will remain as solid state..and if you are thinking about fully electronic miniaturized control it will be some difficult to make by hand.. because, if you examine, you will find that the PCB will be in multilayer, and the components will be SMD.. this will take some good machines to achieve.. but will add all circuits with solid state, full electronics, will be tougher to make, when compared to electromechanical one.. because this will take some various ICs, and related components.. with complex wiring.. but from my experience,  a simple pulse streacher and a MOSFET combination will pull even a heavy motor, on aircrafts.. have some nice projects..

Last, i already told you both ESC circuits are submitted for patency.. and it is taking a little time, as i am unable to travel for long.. but done an arrangement for that.. but dont worry, will send you the circuit once.. there is nothing magic or amaze, but all are easy.. its a simple pulse streacher along with a simple H bridge circuit.. but the only diference is the components used in.. so, dont worry..

Sure.. and one tip.. you can add any H bridge after the streacher, so can add anytype motor to it.. by using the new generation MOSFETs you can push the stuff in to the edge..
