Hey guys , so I am not entirely new to this hobby but what i am facing now is new...
I got a new dys se2205 motor from a rci member.
The problem is it heats up even when it has no prop on it...the motor is supposed to be used on a 4s
I am using a 3s.
I only gave 40-60% throttle during the 30 second test.
But the motor gets hot...
I mean hot not warm... without a prop...
Is it okay? Or is the motor faulty??

Also I am using a new 30a turningy esc...tried the same with a hobywing esc 30a...
Heating persists..
So myesc is fine....battery I used is a tattu 3s 650 mah

Check the resistance b/w all the wires. Resistance b/w any two should be the same, in all cases. That's best to my knowledge. Else, someone sold you a burnt motor.

Just checked the specs. The motor is very inefficient. So, I figure, the inefficiency is generated as heat.

Maybe you're used to pretty much more efficient motors, and it maybe the first time you're coming across an inef. motor.

Check the temperature and update.

In the long run heat will destroy the magnets right...I mean make em less effective..

I checked the i.r it's the same on all....
I DNT understand ., Efficiency can be bad....but why is it so bad that the motor wants to heat up ...even when it's got noprop on it... And I am not even punching the throttle....

Hey! It'd be better if you could give some data, i.e. the temperature.

The Permanent magnets loses it's strength every time you run it, regardless of the motor. That's why I was quoted saying perpetualism is not possible.

So, I'd say it doesn't matter. As long as it runs and provides enough thrust, keep going.

BTW, do you have any experience using high KV motors? If so, you might know if it's normal or not.

And post the resistances.

Does the ESC heat up? If so, just be careful. I blew a ESC couple of months ago. Check the resistance of the the motor as insisted earlier in a reply. Try to compare your readings to that of the given in the datasheet of se2205.
There are some motors which are far less efficient than this one. Although more amt. of heat is generated, its going to be within feasible limits for the design of the motor...
I have used similar motors before. They would barely heat up even after an aggressive flight for about 15min!

I have no means to measure temp... The resistance value between any 2 of 3 wires was 0.7  ..sometimes showed 0.8

I only fly airplanes so my motors are rarely high kv...
But I did have a sky surfer motor...it never got hot in hand
But this motor gets uncomfortably hot....
..esc doesn't heat up at all...
I'll try to return em...I just can't fly peacefully knowing that something up there is heating up .
It's like a unscratchable itch

What about the thrust? I assume you have no means of measuring that, either; but see if it fits the specs. And google if it's normal for that particular make to get heated up. You might not be the only one.

YeA no way to measure thrust...
Did a little reading now...a couple of sites said it heats up coz lacks cooling fins...

@ kk motor is new new excellent condition..
.. should have just bought new emax..instead of trying to cheap out...xd

Yes. Emax has those cooling fins. Check up with the previous owner, if it was the same case, that if he/she too had this overheating issue.

Miniquad motors firstly designed to give plenty of power and so does a lot of heat. However the heat generated will be dissipated by means of a propeller. I think you have to perform the test by mounting a propeller so that it can dissipate heat and if not you can be sure that there is some motor fault.

One thing to remember with miniquad motors is people must be rich to fly miniquads as they tend to wear out very fast compared to bigger size or pancake size motors.
Running coat of miniquads is always high because of their high rated batteries etc. You should have done proper homework before buying it.

YEA YOU HAVE TO BE RICH TO OWN SUCH FAULTY MOTORS AND USE EM
Also 'rich' people don't fly quads they go around in. Heli and drive a Lamborghinior whatever

I am not telling that you are poor.
I am only telling that miniquads are rich man hobby. It doesn't mean really rich but you have to spend a lot of money and still fly for less time but with a lot of fun however.
Even I don't fly miniquads just for the same reason.

If you a multimeter first check the current drawn by motor under no load. If it is different from motor specifications then you can straight away blame the seller for selling a faulty product. Heating up is not a measure of faulty motor.

First you need to frame to what level the motor is heating?
Is it heating very much that you are unable to touch or it is warm around 50 C?
There is a difference. These motors have a lot of thrust and pull so much air that when you mount a propeller on to it the heat generated by it will be dissipated easily.

First I recommend you to perform a test before you post the extent of the fault. You should not leave any stone unturned.
