Title: sparks observed when battery is connected to esc
Post by: prabal276 on October 24, 2015, 10:21:35 AM
Hey,
Even though i called sanjay sir last evening and he gave me great advice,
i want more suggestions.
I have soldered my xt 60 to my esc and at the same time i connected the xt60 battery counterpart to it so as to reduce the heat.
Then i soldered the positive connector of the battery to the + side of the xt60. When i touched the - connection of the battery to the - of the xt60, sparks were observed!
Refer to the dig. below. all the connectors exept the neg. battery connector were soldered and heat shrinked. sparks are observed when it is touched to the xt60.
Is my NEW 40amp esc faulty?
or there may be a solder somewhere between the xt60?

@prabal276,

Since the load (esc) is already plugged in, the circuit gets completed when you touch the negative lead of the battery to the XT60, and the esc draws its idling current. Hence the sparking.
Please disconnect the esc. If need be, you can use a male XT60 which is not connected to anything.
By the way, you can hold the XT60 in pliers with a rubber band around the handle. This will free both hands, one for the lead and one for the soldering iron!

Please be extremely careful while soldering lipo leads.

Do not solder on a live terminal! Ever!!!!

Sparking when connecting battery to esc is good sign but bad for connector wear and tear, spark means all ur capacitors are working, at zero charge capacitors are short circuit.
And while soldering use a dummy plug , with no power source.
