Hi Kumar,

Spinner size and type is more dependant on the type and size of your model. Motor and actually the prop adaptor will determine which type of spinner will work. So which size and type of airplane you want to put this in? I think a 2" or probably a little smaller spinner should be fine.

Thank you salam,

actually, every time i fly my model, when landing, some how the prop is breaking or bending. its happening with me almost every time. So finally i have decided to go for the folding props. But i have never seen how a folding prop looks like and dont know what are the pre requisites to install folding props ? On what basis i should purchase a foldable prop?

My actual requirement is to use 8x4 propeller.

Thanks in advance.....

You should be using something like this

http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_48_80&products_id=709

or this

http://rcbazaar.com/products/107-folding-spinner-35-x-32.aspx

The spinner outside dia should correspond/match with your fuse size at the motor mount

Props are (8X4)

http://rcbazaar.com/products/369-8-x-4-folding-propeller.aspx

You should ensure the prop arms can swing easily. Remember to put a dot of thread locker on the screws holding the prop arm to the spinner - you don't want them to open mid-flight!  Wink

Breaking prop during landings have things to do with incorrect landing techniques, landing on hard surface or incorrect landing gear design so I am sure with time and after improving your landing technique you should overcome this issue. Looks like you are flying a small foam plane so choose a smooth, softer grass surface for landing and if possible try hand launch and belly landing. Kill throttle just before touch down so the motor has no energy before touch down.

Folding props are mostly used in Limited Motor Run (LMR) thermal and high speed gliders which use limited motor run to gain height quickly and after the motor shuts, the prop folds to reduce drag. To reduce damage during a prop strike you can use a prop saver style prop adaptor rather than getting an expensive folding prop setup. We do not use folding prop in other than a gilder because in our aerobatic, military or civilian like planes, we use prop to windmill which works as airbreak to slow down our planes during landing.

Something like this will be a cheap solution which in case of a prop strike will save your prop and avoid damage to your motor shaft. These should be easily available in your local shop to fit the size of your motor.

@sanjayrai55:- Thank you sanjay for the links and guidelines/pre-cautions.

@salam:- You are right salam, well said and agree with you. The prop savers are affordable but Actually i tried these prop savers, They are not holding the motor shaft perfectly. on a high rpm some times the prop is coming out of the rubber band and on top of that some of my motors are not having a cut (red mark rounded on image) on the shaft to hold tight the prop saver.

Try to find a good quality prop saver adaptor and O ring, use blue thread locker on the two bolts and that will help but you are right, prop saver setup can't hold bigger and heavier props so you have to use slow fly props with it. They can only be used upto a certain weight and size of planes but for 8x4 size prop I do not see any problem.

Try to use a slow fly prop and see.

Good quality prop saver adapter will stick to motor shafts which has no notch. You can make that notch/cut by sanding one side of it. It will stick easy after that. Also use a tiny drop of thread locker or CA for a better hold.

Folding props are not an expensive proposition in the long term. The spinner is a one time cost, and the props go on forever! The same spinner can be used on different motors if the shaft dia is the same, with different sized props

Yes Sanjay, i guess, a very good quality of prop saver equals to a spinner cost almost.....
