Title: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on August 11, 2010, 08:10:13 PM
I would like to offer 4 different models of basic balsa gliders. These are chuck / catapult models. The prices are slightly absurd in today's world, but then, if I get them cheap, I sell them cheap! The same models are sold at 2 to 3 times the price at hobby / toy shops. That is, if they are sold at all nowadays! Moreover, these sellers do not supply the adhesive tube as a part of the package. Courier will be charged extra on actuals.

I am sorry, I don't have the actual photographs right now, so I'm posting a picture which is an indication of the models in question.

These are the good old NCC type kits that we learnt from, in the days gone by. Sanding work will have to be carried out to create the aerofoil shapes. Each glider kit comprises approximately 7 - 10 pieces of pre cut parts, plans, sand paper, elastic band and an adhesive tube.

Basic models :

Auster   -  19 cm wingspan - Simple Dihedral wing - Rs. 60/-
Boreas   -  23 cm wingspan - Simple Dihedral wing - Rs. 70/-
Eurus     -  33 cm wingspan - Tip dihedral wing - Rs. 90/-
Zephyr   -  37 cm wingspan - Polyhedral wing - Rs. 120/-

These models can be easily converted for micro RC flight, if you have the knowledge.

Each model will be securely packed to avoid any breakages in transit. I am expecting my first stock of 100 gliders around the last week of August. First come first served.

Please PM me for further details. Please help me join the elite band of Aeromodelling Outlets in India! :giggle:

Regards,

VC

Why don't you name them instead of A, B, C?
Those little gems deserve a name!

Haven't thought of a nomenclature as yet! Let me think up something.......

Thanks Flyingboxcar, I will name them Auster, Boreas, Eurus and Zephyr - the Romans personified the winds with these names based on the 4 cardinal directions.

Keep it up///

Those are good prices. Posting the courier charge would be helpful for buyers.

Post by: VC on August 11, 2010, 09:07:03 PM
A reliable (DTDC, Blue Dart, Overnite) courier would charge around Rs.100/- for 2 gliders, I guess. As I said, courier prices will be on actuals. Some couriers may charge as less as Rs.50/- if the package weight is below 100 grams.

Check out this site, it is an indicator: http://www.firstflight.net/domestic.asp

Thanks for the interest Nehal. Posting some pics but they are only indicative. The completed model may differ a bit but it will be nearly similar to the pictures.

Wonder how I can add this to the "mega list of RC stores in India" :)  Should I just add this as "The Chuck Glider Store" ? ;)

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on August 11, 2010, 10:05:40 PM
The terms Polyhedral, Dihedral and Quadrihedral can be a litle confusing, so I thought that I will post a diagram to explain the wing patterns. Hope this helps.

PLEASE note that the images are only indicative and that I will post pictures of the actual product, the moment my samples arrive. I am expecting them in the next 2 or 3 days.

Please bear with me till then and keep the enquiries on. It is a GREAT feeling.

Cheers!

Anwar Sahab, that would be an honour for me. "The Chuck Glider Store" sounds apt. Let's do it!

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: flyingboxcar on August 11, 2010, 10:34:14 PM
VC, the last two remind me of the Hunter and Yellow bird
On the terminology part, the word poly means many/much
Wiki defines it as  "Having multiple dihedral angles along the wingspan" see http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/polyhedral?rdfrom=Polyhedral
so both the C and D would still be techincaly defined as polyhedral

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on August 11, 2010, 10:38:20 PM
Yes you are right, especially the Yellow Bird. The Hunter would be similar to the Boreas (I hope). My first ever aeromodel, way back in 1974/75, was the Hunter. Good old days....................

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on August 11, 2010, 10:50:28 PM
These terms were dictated by the manufacturer of the kits and I had no reason to argue with him. Anwarulhuq was kind enough to rectify the terminologies. I had requested him to post the correct terms here.

According to him - Auster, Boreas are 'Simple Dihedrals", Eurus would be a "Tip Dihedral" and the Zephyr would be a "Polyhedral".

Yes Boreas is the Hunter, the clssic lines of Sydney Camm's design are unmistakable

Inspired by your encouraging responses, I just finished designing a template for the The Glider Shop.

Anwar Sahab had suggested "The Chuck Glider Store" and the idea germinated from there. However, I modified the name slightly as I am including Catapult Gliders now and will soon be including Rubber Powered Models and Tow Line Gliders. One of the Tow gliders has a wingspan of nearly 52 inch. It will also be priced very economically.

Please let me have your comments. I wanted the template to have an old world charm about it.

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on August 12, 2010, 10:12:28 PM
After a lot of coaxing and cajoling the courier personnel, I finally managed to release the samples of the gliders. Posting the pictures of the 4 model kits. I wasn't expecting something world class at these prices and I am not disappointed.

These kits will be nostalgic for those who were into the hobby in the 70's and 80's.

Some members have PM'd with enquiries about the possibilities of converting these models to RC. Most of my knowledge in this field is handed down to me by Col. Sundaram (Sundaramvelar) who is a champion in the field of micro RC.

Yes. It can be done and it is being done all over the world.

Plantraco sells all equipment required from Motors, actuators, micro Rx's and batteries. However, cheaper alternatives are available in the local market. For example, you can get a used Cellphone Vibra motor for as cheap as Rs.20/- and a CR 2032 battery for Rs. 15/- or less. It will take some effort to remove the eccentric weight from the vibra motor shaft, but once you get the hang of it, its easy. Alternatively brand new, coreless pager motors are available for Rs.125/-. There are many tutorials on the net which can teach us how to make actuators that work as servos.

Just remember that once your glider has been trimmed and has flown successfully, you will have to then mount all your equipment as close to the CG line to maintain the balance. Alternatively, you may want to start the build process with an entirely different perspective of creating an electric RC model from the very start.

Link to coreless pager motors:

http://www.robosoftsystems.co.in/roboshop/motor-accesories/dc-motors/coreless-motor.html

There are a lot of informative discussions on International RC forums on the subject of converting small gliders to RC, some of them are here:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=793912
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=761967
http://www.microrccars.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=17&t=196&s=
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4549324/printable.htm

I have successfully converted a small Depron glider (wingspan 11 inches) into a free flight electric model. It wasn't too difficult.

I hope I have been able to satisfy some queries.

If you've never done this before, please read up your basics of aeromodelling and get your fundamentals correct. There is an easier alternative though! Get yourself to Jhansi and meet up with Col. Sundaram and he will teach you everything. He is a wonderful Officer and a Gentleman and won't charge you a penny. ;D  :giggle:

Regards.

Hi! Extremely sorry for the delay. The gliders have arrived in Guwahati today and I should be despatching them tomorrow.

Not trying to make any excuses, but apparently flood waters entered the manufacturers factory and ruined his jig - as a result of this the production had to be stopped for 7 days.Thank you for bearing with me. :(

Hi,
I would like to buy a glider for my college contests
Please suggest me a Good Glider and its price!!!
Thanks!!
I believe these gliders need some experience and hardwork like sanding for airfoil, glue etc to get them airborne. I am a complete newbie but my reading indicates that there could be tens (if not hundreds) other reasons why a completed glider does not fly as imagined.
If (repeat If) you too are a newbie like me and this is your first glider, you may face some disappointment during the contest.

Dear Vishwas,

"The more I read, more apprehensive I am getting" - Just don't worry! Even if you just join the pieces, add half the supplied plasticene weight to the nose and launch her- she will fly! Just stop reading and DO IT! Forget about trimming, sanding, aerofoil shapes and other jargon. Follow your heart, for once, it shows you the way............

If you need any assistance from me, do call (you have my number).

Cheers!

Your gliders were sent out through DTDC, first thing in the morning. You can use any big rubber band and a wooden dowel (or two pencils tightly cello taped together) to make a catapult. You don't need to visit a LHS for it.

Received the parcel today. 2 magpies and one Millenium. It was so well packed that it was almost impenetrable. I am posting the photos of the package. As you can see, fuse of one of the Magpie is broken. But this is a small issue and I can fix it. Dihedrals are missing from both the magpies. Please help to resolve this issue.

Regards

Vishwas

Will arrange for it immediately. Extremely sorry for the inconvenience. I have received similar complaints from others (missing dihedrals) and am taking it up with my supplier. In future i will have to check each and every individual kit.

Regrets and Regards,

Hey VC this brings back memories from when I learnt Aeromodelling ( 80s). Back then a Calcutta based company called Aurora used to make these and other bigger balsa wood kits. I wonder if the company still exists
Just for trivia , the names they had for these models :-
auster - gnat
boreas - hunter
Eurus - Yellow bird
They also made some excellent towline and RC models , I remember we made a polyhedral glider with a wing span of about 5 feet. Wonder if anyone has access to this company or the blue prints.

Post by: flyingboxcar on March 28, 2011, 07:47:08 PM
Viksi,
All of them are still available and the company is still in existance (not in thier former glory though).
Was that 60 inch span polyhedral towline? Was it Inchwarm/Lamoutte/Lucifer?

Post by: viksi on March 28, 2011, 09:31:31 PM
Lucifer rings a bell :) Just the cockpit of the thing weighed about kilo.

Does Aurora have a website or dealers around Delhi ?

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: flyingboxcar on March 28, 2011, 09:47:50 PM
Lucifer cockpit? No the model did not have a cockpit, I am talking of Lucifer the towline glider. One distinguishing mark of the design was geodetic tailplane constructions.
I do not think you can get Aurora models in Delhi, Kolkatta is the only place today

Yep Aurora models sold by India's Hobby Centre, Kolkata.

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: viksi on March 28, 2011, 10:07:58 PM
By cockpit i meant the nose. The cg of the thing was way front and the heavy nose was used to counter the rest of the body.

We used to have an India's hobby center in Connaught place, Delhi when i was a kid. And the guy was awesome. He would throw in some extra balsa and laquer every time we bought the kits. do the aurora guys / IHC have a website. ?

Nope, they don't. They are busy selling Ice Cream and fleecing young kids by selling Chuck Gliders made out of Japonica for 300 bucks. Shame!

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: ankitbaid on March 28, 2011, 11:15:36 PM
they came to our college and gave out 21cms gliders at the cost of 300 rs per group...(onw glider per group of 3)
and then i came across this forum , thanks to rohit , and realised how casually are they cheating on people and bringing shame to this beautiful hobby...:(

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: ankitbaid on March 28, 2011, 11:16:30 PM
by shame to hobby , i only mean how first timers may misinterpret the people associated with this hobby...no offense intended

Really shameful and VC bhaiya to add to that they sold a Deans connector to me for Rs 150 and there is much more to add to this which i don't want to elaborate. As truly pointed out by Rajib bhaiya, if you want to stay in this hobby then stay away from IHC.

"if you want to stay in this hobby then stay away from IHC."

How sad, how very sad but true. 25 years ago I would have said, "If you want to get into aeromodelling, go to India Hobby Centre and meet Tapan. He will take care of everything."

how the mighty have fallen. It is indeed a pity considering everything i learnt in aeromodelling came from IHC, cp. (and bal bhawan , new delhi )

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on March 28, 2011, 11:43:12 PM
Deans connector @ Rs.150/- ?! Wow, that is cheap compared to some others who sell it on the net for Rs. 225/- + 30 = Rs.255/- per set  :giggle:

Yet again, check this link, it is /will soon be available for Rs.39.60.

http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=36

Now, if you Gentlemen are done with it, STOP Hijacking my thread and let me earn a living by selling my Balsa wood gliders! Any takers?  ;D :giggle:

VC what kind balsa wood you are using for gliders that you're selling?

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: VC on March 29, 2011, 12:17:02 AM
I have no idea. In the good old days, the gliders that I bought smelt different. The gliders that I sell do not smell the same. I guess, they are also not true balsa. Could be Japonica or something else - they are certainly NOT Imported Balsa! But then, my giders cost Rs.60/- (for a 21cm wingspan) as compared to Rs. 300/- sold by IHC.

I hope you get my drift................!

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: Rajib on March 29, 2011, 12:53:19 AM
Let’s not talk about IHC, they are dangerous for any newbie, sorry but this is truth. I was not asking about cost of the glider, I was just trying knowing source of your balsa wood. I was checking import of balsa from April 2010 to October 2010 and the data shocking, people are importing so much foreign balsa in India but then why no one has enough stock, if demand of balsa is so much then what people are doing with so much balsa, VC if you're importing so much balsa then don't keep it secret, give me some ;D

Title: Re: Balsa wood Gliders
Post by: viksi on March 29, 2011, 12:57:29 AM
NuBalsa also is pretty good for chuck gliders. One, its cheaper, two , its hardy.

Also , for newbies at chuck gliders, remember to sand and make aerofoils on these chucks. They fly really well especially the Eurus model.  The Eurus if trimmed properly will give u good 30-50 seconds flights. Also remember to point it a little towards the ground when launching with a rubber band sling, otherwise it's standard flight pattern is to make a big loop to the back of your head :)

my sales plug for you VC :)

I recently  found that there is an Army of 'indigenous UAV company' , who are consuming large amount of off the shelf component in hope of Minting our Tax money through Gov agencies. Ask them.

Ujjwal I am going to e-mail you one PDF file, it is big file so I cannot upload here and if you see that file you will understand better. Three companies are importing balsa if I am not wrong, I have to find out the name of importer and exporter.

Does any one from Hyd know this firm. Apparently they do deal in Balsa. But my guess would be bulk and not your average hobby size sheets and spars

Sorry I am not selling the gliders at the moment. Will update on the forum as and when I decide to start again. Manufacturers have finally spiked prices by nearly 75% over the last year. They had been pressurising me for increments and it was getting really difficult to keep supplying at the old prices.

If people are still interested at these enhanced prices, please PM me your requirements.
