Live steam Putt Putt / Pop Pop Boats. These tinplate boats are manufactured in India almost exclusively for the European market, where they retail for around GBP 5.00 / USD 10.00. (Rs.550/-) each. Each boat measures around 5 - 5.5 inches.

After a lot of effort with the help of friends in UP, I managed to track down a manufacturer who was willing to let me buy some in retail. I am REALLY surprised that these boats are not available in India (that’s what he said). If that is true, it is a real a shame.

I remember, as a child, I used to plead with my Mom to buy them for me @ Rs.10/- each. She has passed on and so have those days.......... Damn this parasitic 3rd world Globalisation.

They look really cute running round and round in a small bucket! 

It's available at most times at Connaught Place, New Delhi. There are a couple of street vendors who stock them. I can't really comment about the prices though! I last bought them a couple of years ago!

Speaking about the price, to me, Rs 200 for a pair doesn't sound expensive for something that's not available easily in most parts of the country!   

Ahaa finally...I have been looking for these since a long many days. As a child of 6-7 yrs old I too was mesmerized by the boat turning round & round and making that distinct pop ..pop sound. I was in Bankura and back in those days we had a well in our compound and had to pull out water with a rope and bucket with my elders help  to fill a "choubachha" to run them in (only some ppl will understand what I am talking about  )...will defintely treasure these.

If you happen to travel from Mumbai to Pune or vice versa, you will find these at all mid way stops, the bus takes on the highway. Bought one for 40 bucks.

Thanks all for all the valuable info. Fact of the matter is that there has been a BOOM in the demand for these toys primarily from Germany. They import them in container loads and have commissioned multiple manufacturing units (read entire villages) as 100% E.O.U. This has lead to two things - Firstly, the small time manufacturers have developed a huge ego and shun any demands from the local market. The second fall out has been the steep increase in prices and tremendous shortfall in supply to the local market.

It is also sad, that they are exporting beautiful designs and models to Europe which are not available for the Indian consumer. Perhaps, there is an embargo/dictat of some sort levied by the importers to this effect.

I am still negotiating (to enhance my profit margins  ) and will keep you all posted.

Thanks to all the sleuthing and research done by the fellow members of this forum, I have been able to flex my muscles and pin this supplier to the mat. Prices expected to be slashed soon. He is on the receiving end now. This victory is sweet and it is all thanks to you guys. I may not buy from the supplier at all, but I just want him to eat his words -" Nahin pusata to kahin aur se ley lijiye. Hummey yeh sab chota mota ordero se koi waasta nahin." I am going to make him offer to sell these boats to me at half the price, whether I buy or not is a different issue.
