Title: Lunchbox contest - 20second flight
Post by: K K Iyer on October 06, 2020, 10:08:51 PM
Hi everyone,
You may know for the last few years, I’d been offering a Rs 1000 prize for a 10 second flight, but had no success.
Yesterday I raised the prize to 5000, and someone did 10+ seconds within 24 hours!
That too with a paper plane, something I never expected.
Congratulations to Imperial Fire.

Then it occured to me that giving the entire kitty to one person encourages only one person.

So I’m starting a new contest with a Rs 5000 kitty, to be shared between the first 4 successful entries as 2000, 1500, 1000 and 500.

The objective is a 20 second flight.

I’ll post rules and deadlines in a day or two, after waiting for suggestions, if any, from members.

All I’m trying to do is encourage a low cost introduction to the basics of how to build and fly model airplanes.

Do let me know if you think this is a good idea, or should be abandoned.

Regards

Edit
Changes made to entry fee and prize money.

Congratulations Imperial fire.

And well done Iyer sir for inciting the interest. If I may suggest, Can we organize something of this short where people can pay a nominal fee and register and then prepare for the contest to win. The pooled money can be the winning prize.

@tonystark,
Thanks for your interest and suggestion.
I’ve often wondered if it would work.

While I stubbornly pursue my attempts every year, to get at least 5-6 chuck gliders in the air, the facts are like this:

- last year Glidiator and Saikat offered to match the prize money, but the contest closed without a single entry
- before that the only successful entry was by Glidiator, but being an old hand, he released the prize in favour of the only other attempt (kiran rc, 7 seconds)

I think there simply isn’t enough interest in a 10 or 20 second flight challenge, maybe because:
- youngsters think it too childish to build/ fly chuck gliders in this age of FPV Micro Quads
- they have never seen a proper chuck or catapult glider fly, so they have no idea of the possibilities
- no access to balsa
- prize not attractive enough

ONE MORE IDEA

Sometime back, Sanjayrai55, another old hand, suggested that I supply identical kits to participants.
If combined with your suggestion, it will involve cost of kit + postage + entry fee.

Lets look at the economics
Say 200 for kit + 50 postage + 250 entry fee, total 500.
Assume 5 entries, so 1250 entry fee.
I match it, so prize kitty 2500.
Or four prizes of 1000, 750, 500 and 250.

Target can be 10 seconds by hand launch, or 20 seconds by catapult.
Quite easy, no?

If I get 5 entrants, I could start this.
With luck, we may get a few sponsors to add to the prize money!

Waiting to hear from potential entrants.

Regards

This idea seems viable Iyer sir!!

Currently I'm in the process of making a chuck glider from EPP foam but I'm confused as to what to use for the spar. Don't have access to a lot of wood here sadly.

If so, we have 1 potential entry.
The first response I got was ‘Not participating’ from karthick ashwath!

Long way to go for minimum 5 entries.

I’ve often wondered if it would work.

Its surely difficult Sir but the right motivation can make it happen. If people are into quads, lets have competition in that arena. may be for certain weight class, the longest hover time award or best aerial photoshots or something on this line?

I remember when I competed for BAJA in 2010 and 2011. It was not about the money, it was about learning & proving your own/team's design and challenging the front runners. A healthy environment can breed best of us. 20 sec is a good starter I believe.

We already have 3 entries here now. Statistically, 5 should not be difficult given the no. of member on this forum. Once those many entries are in, this can be kicked off.

On the other thought:

Many of the entrant would be the greenhorns, they have the enthusiasm and are willing to compete. Money is the biggest motivator but there can be other stuffs too. Like used/spare motors, props, 3d print services, balsa cutting services etc. These can also be offered along side. Those who possess used/spare parts can offer this as a prize money. Those who have 3D printer can offer the services at say high discounted rate (winner can win this service) likewise those with CNC can offer free balsa cutting coupons/service for winners. This way there would be lot on the table and enough to motivate people to take a dive.

The purpose here is to make hobby more fun and engaging. I am sure, whoever checked Imperial video would be checking how long that thing is flying. It was fun, as the way it should be.

Title: Re: Next contest - 20second flight
Post by: K K Iyer on October 08, 2020, 07:16:53 PM
@tonystark,
You’re right. Money is not the only motivator, just the simplest.
There are a few examples:
- Sanjayrai55 often gives models away
- Glidiator gives kits away
- a few years ago, an American diplomat (theleabres) used to build electric schoolyard size models, and give them away for token amounts

I too used to give away stuff like props, prop adapters, linkage stoppers, hinges, horns etc.
And I used to lend motors, Escs, even TxRx.
But sometimes it was hard to get the stuff back, so I stopped.

If you are on RCGROUPS, you may have noticed that two veterans (60-80 age group), run ‘build offs’ every 6 months. Current theme is ‘Vintage Glider’. Earlier themes were ‘Early Age Revisit’ for models you wish you had built long ago, but somehow never did. Or ‘OZNoP’ for plans for which there were no photos on OuterZone.co.uk. Or ‘CAP’, ie, Complete a Project, for incomplete builds or pending repairs.

Typically about 15 members register, and about 12 complete the project or build off.
Then there is a popularity poll. No prize, except for an occasional gift.
It’s wonderful!

Good to see 4 enquires so far.
I’ll try to get 6 kits ready by Sunday.
Slight delay as I don’t have spruce or hard balsa for fuselage.
I have CF tubes, but that’s too expensive for this project.
So I have to decide between CF, GF, or bamboo reinforcement!

Come on guys, can we have a few more applicants?
Don’t worry about the rules and deadlines etc, they will be simple.

Which model?
See my forthcoming ‘2nd Chuck’ thread...

@SI74,
Welcome aboard!
You are the guy who built my Indore Bipe and flew it in the badminton court and parking space in front of your palatial house. Right?

Time? No worry.
Since I’m providingthe kit, and glue, plasticine, sanding block, rubber bands etc, you need only 5 minutes.
Or 30 minutes if you want to sand the wing...

Post by: K K Iyer on October 09, 2020, 09:23:19 PM
Hi all potential participants,

The economics of such a contest are:
5 entrants pay 500 each
Total 2500
Four prizes, 1000+750+500+250, total 2500
So I end up supplying free kits and even paying for shipping.
Not viable in the long run, is it?

And 4 prizes for 5 entries is too much, no?

If we had 10 entries, paying 500 each, total 5000,
After prize money of 2500, I’d be left with 2500,:for 10 kits @200+50 postage.

So I won’t be out of pocket, as I was by rashly offering 5000 for a 10 second flight last week.

So can we have 10 participants?

I plan to send the first kit to Sanjayrai55.
As he’s a participant but not a competitor, he can establish a base line for what can be easily achieved.
If the Lunchbox can easily do 10sec on hand launch, or 20second on catapult,
The minimum qualifying standard would be 15 second hand launch, 30 second catapult.

Sounds reasonable?

I’m thinking of a time frame like upto 30th Nov.

And rules like this:
1. Entry fee 200 for kit +50 shipping +250 towards prize, total 500
2. Flight duration is the criterion. Highest duration wins
3. As catapult can easily outperform hand launch, 15 seconds hand launch considered equal to 30 seconds by catapult.
4. If you don’t want the kit, pay only 250 towards prize money. But you have to fly the same model.
5. Eligibility for prize, minimum 15 seconds hand launch, 30 seconds catapult.

6. Each entry flight supported by video
7. You can go on posting longer flights till the deadline.

If that sounds ok, I’ll start making the kits.

Can I get 4 more participants?

Regards

I think once you prepare and test fly the prototype, interest will spark.

Put up a build log and test flight, and some hints on trimming!

CONTEST GUIDELINES

1. This is DURATION contest for hand launch gliders (HLGs) and catapult launch gliders (CLGs). Propulsion is limited to muscle or rubber band power.

2. Highest duration achieved and video posted here by closing date wins.

3. To emphasise flying, (rather than design, material, construction etc), and to provide a level playing field, this is a ONE DESIGN contest.

4. The model is the Lunchbox, designed in 1975 by John Oldenkamp, a well known American modeller. Selected for its simplicity and ability to easily do 10 seconds from a hand launch.

5. Since access to balsa is a major obstacle, kits are being made available. The kit has everything needed to complete assembly in a few minutes.

6. If you don’t need the kit, and want to build it from scratch, the plan is available on Outerzone.co.uk

https://outerzone.co.uk/download_file.asp?planID=11309&FileType=Plan&Filename=Lunchbox_oz11309.pdf

7. If you wish to enter some other design, limit wingspan to 8 inches, and length to 10.5 inches.

8. CONTEST CLOSES 9pm on 30th Nov. Videos to by uploaded by then.

9. Prizes Rs 1000, 750, 500 and 250 for longest 4 flights.
Minimum eligible duration is 10 seconds for HLG and 20 seconds for CLG

10. Since CLGs can easily achieve twice the launch height of HLGs, duration of HLG flight will be multiplied by 2. I.e, a 10 second HLG flight will be treated as equal to a 20 second CLG flight.

11. Since the prize kitty has to be generated (mainly) from entries, participants have to contribute Rs 250 per entry.

12. Cost of kit is Rs 200+ 50 postage. So 500 with kit, 250 without kit.

13. PM me your entry confirmation and address if you need the kit. I’ll send bank details.

Post queries regarding the contest in this thread.
Post queries regarding the model in the ‘2nd Chuck - Lunchbox’ thread.

Hope Speedpost can deliver the kits by 30th Oct.

Gentlemen and Ladies, start your engines!

5 kits are ready!

Despatch of kits delayed by a day or two, as I decided to give the models a coat of dope, as recommended in the original article. Something that participants except sanjayrai55 may not have at hand.

You have read the Sep 1975 Model Airplane News article available on Outerzone, haven’t you?  :)

Can we reduce the entry fee to attract more participation ?

Just a thought

The prize money is already too low to really motivate participation, it’s only a token.
5000 for 10 seconds produced a result in 24 hours, after years of no response to 1000 prize.

Attractive prize money with low entry fee is only possible with a sponsor to foot the bill.

The economics so far is like this:
4 confirmed entries @500 and one @ 250 (non competitor, only kit)
So 2250 for 5 kits.
4 prizes and only 4 contestants, so everyone wins.
Income 2250, outgo 2500 for prizes and 250 for 5 kits postage.
Net outgo 500 + 5 kits free.

Not sustainable. I’m doing it out of my desire to promote some grassroots level activity.

Let me know if you can think of an alternative

sir, your efforts are appreciable   {:)}  :salute:
Truly speaking I haven't  made a chuckglider myself, I just jumped in for the challenge of constructing and flying our own creation.

I have felt that joy, when I have flown tow-line gliders,  control line models and even radio controlled models after constructing them from kits.

As such I don't have any alternative but aero-modellers who are interested to challenge themselves by constructing and flying their own model will surely give it a thought.

I would request all the forum members and visitors surfing this website to come forward and give a good competition or sponsorship

Thank you

Suppose I started a one design towline glider contest for a simple, reliable design like the Mercury Gnome.

How many entries do you think I’d get?

My estimate is Zero.

Next year I’ll try to think of something new...

My message to Freeflight, (participant from USA)

“Hope you don’t mind participating as a ‘no entry fee, no prize money’ contestant.
Like an Amateur golfer in a ProAm golf!

As the amounts are meagre ($3 entry, prizes $12, 8, 5 and 3) it’s not worth the bother of international fund transfers.

I expect your contribution to the contest to be inspiration for others!

Regards”

His reply:

“My exact feelings : just for the sheer enjoyment, hoping I can share my experiences so that they are set up for success and hence the enjoyment.

Will start posting pointers very soon as i start build tomorrow.”

Hi  KK,

Have not been browsing this forum for a while - lot of other domestic commitments.
Got a heads up on this great initiative by you from Free Flight yesterday.

Will be happy to participate / contribute in whatever way you deem fit.

Am not an expert in HLG or CLG - will be great to join the fun.

Will take part in the CLG only as am suffering from a frozen shoulder - so HLG is out.
How does one send the entry fee?

Have balsa so will not need a kit.

I am excited to participate with all of you. We aim to first have fun and also to excel at this.

Please, "Patience" is the key. I know some of you may want to run faster, but lets try our best to keep everybody together.
Currently I am putting my Lunchbox glider together. But let us wait till every one gets their kits. By the way, I am building with similar great wood that you have in the kit and same rubber bands, no Tan rubber that are superb but not needed in our case.

Trimming starts from the build, so take your time. A not so neat or inaccurate built glider will never trim. Will post many pointers in the build thread that Mr. Iyer started, not here.  See you there.

Further -- will be happy participate as a "No Prize" contestant but with entry fee.

Wow.
Welcome to the earliest supporter of my 10 second quest.

Honorary participants need not pay the entry fee, but if they do, it helps me break even.

You’re in touch with Freeflight, eh?

Being an entry fee paying participant will make me take the exercise more seriously and aim to get good flight performances.
Is the method of submitting entry fee in the thread earlier.

Free Flight and me I discovered were schoolmates.
Have been having some very interesting and informative interactions.

You may find it hard to believe, but in the next lot, talcum powder has been rubbed into the wings to fill the grain, then doped and sanded with 600 grit.

Then polished with Turtle Wax!

Hope you like it.

The wings feel silky smooth now.
And the 5 of them together still weigh only 30gms, without nose weight.

Terrific. This is class A kit that you all are getting. All ready to go. Such a ready made kit here goes for about a $ 40 or more each. But they are not waxed, doped etc. Enjoy.

I guess I should start posting pictures in the other thread as the contestant will not want to wait to build and trim.

KIT and/or CONTESTANT

1. Weekendflyer
2. Rooster
3. SI74
4. Sanjayrai55 (Kit only, Honorary contestant?)
5. Aspersid
6. Hitesh Kher
7. Prabal276
8. Karthick Ashwath
9. Freeflight (No kit, Honorary contestant)
10. Glidiator (No kit, Honorary contestant)
11. Alex Bessie
12. Girish Madhavan
13. Dreamliner (only kit, not contesting?)

So 9contestants for 4 prizes.

Best of luck, gentlemen. Start your flights and post your flight videos.
Remember you are not restricted to one flight.
And that hand launch has a 2x multiple over catapult launch.
Go on posting videos as your flight duration improves.

To get the contest up and running, I look forward to the first video of 10+ seconds hand launch or 20+ seconds catapult launch.

Edit: correction

Only to protect from getting wet in the dew. Not essential.

I’ve used Touchwood before (available in a small tin too).

But will need several hours to dry. Possibly heavier than NC Lacquer.

8. CONTEST CLOSES 9pm on 30th Nov Monday the 14th Dec.

You can post multiple videos, as the duration keeps improving. Only one prize per winner, though  ;D

No limit on rubber band size. Only TAN Super Sport rubber is not allowed, as only 3 of us may have it!

Hello sir I read this thread today
Is competition over?
I am interested, but also not interested to buy kit
Can I make my own and launch by hand as you said?
I am interested to build and fly if there is any restrictions of weight and size then please mention that because I am willing to participate.
Thank you.

Himanshu sir, competition is definitely not over. You are free to make your own launch. Iyer sir's idea is to promote deeper knowledge of aerodynamics through chuck gliders. I think there is a design restriction. Only Lunchbox allowed to make it more beginner friendly.

S174: thank you for the kind words. You are very welcome. I enjoyed to come to know you in the thread.

Keep on going, not so much to win a contest, which is fun of course, but to watch your model catch a thermal and lazily glide around. No motor, no gas, no noise, no special model airports, yet a lot of fun that that tries your ability to think things through and then EXCEL.

Hitesh, Great job. Two flights close to 40 seconds. From both your videos your launch and transition are perfect. So your Launch and bank angle are absolutely correct. to hit the 40 seconds, may I suggest that you put a very small tiny amount of clay on the nose. This will remove the slight stall in the glide phase. Your glider will fly with authority versus too floaty and banging in the wind at times. Try it.
Let us know.

So do not be shy. Give it a shot, winners, runners-up, those to still optimizing , everyone.

It has been a pleasure to see everyone's video and how you guys managed the struggles. Thanks for giving me a small part in it. It is your hard work!

I agree.  FreeFlight has been a very good mentor.  Also, KK Iyer Sir has encouraged us all by starting such a contest.   :hatsoff: {:)}
This is my first CLG and the amount of knowledge I got throughout the process is just amazing.
Glide Test / Trimming, launching, transition and finally the glide - so much has been learnt.

After all this, it can be said that making a chuckglider fly smoothly is not a child's play.

Dear All,

It has been a delightful contest.

Thank you Mr. Iyer for initiating, sponsoring, building the kits, mailing it all out in wonderful packages so they arrive safely, and very vital giving the benefit of your experience to all so that they can truly enjoy.

Bravo !

It was great to meet and engage with all of you.

But the quest for a one minute flight on a HLG or CLG should not be over. Check the other thread soon as I have suggestions. When you guys start hitting the one minute flights consistently on a Lunchbox then do share your experiences with your friends to as they say in the US "Make Free Flight Great Again" LOL!

Not an Adios!

Best Regards,
Free Flight

Many of you never got around to what I meant by a proper test glide.

That the nose has to point down to the ground about 20-30 ft away.
It has to be launched downwards towards the target.
The speed has to be slow enough to avoid climbing and fast enough to avoid diving.

So here’s a parting shot.

A Goodbye launch...

Title: Entry fee and prize money
Post by: K K Iyer on December 23, 2020, 08:28:26 PM
Hi everyone,

Nine people paid 250 each as entry fee, total Rs 2250.

Prize money disbursements:

1. Rs 1000. Hitesh Kher donated 500 towards next contest, and deposited 500 with me for future kits

2. Rs 750. Credited to SI74’s account. He has offered it as a contribution to the next contest

3. Rs 500. Credited to Weekendflyer’s (wife’s) account

I feel sad that 5 entants could not post a single video. I guess they had other compulsions.
But their contributions didn’t go waste - they built up the prize kitty!

Regards

Firstly. kudos to KK Iyer sir for not only organizing and sponsoring this contest, but for providing continuous encouragement, and much  gyaan on the finer points' Kudos to all the prize sponsors too

Secondly, I sincerely regret not participating myself. A family member is quite ill, and I have to spend time with him and also am temporarily running his business attending his office daily

Many congratulations to all the winners - in my book whoever completed and flew the model is a winner many times over!

Well, I guess  im a bit late here(preparing for boards and jee and the lot).
Iiyer Sir, why dont you host another competition like this, but maybe after may 2021(after jee and the lot finish), like maybe just for the fun of it, maybe like a paper plane category, just suggesting.
You are a hero btw.
