Title: Payload Contest - any suggestions?
Post by: K K Iyer on May 26, 2022, 08:30:20 PM
Hi everyone,
Some of you may know for the last few years, I’d been offering a Rs 1000 prize for a 10 second flight, but had no success.
Then, on 5th Oct 2020, I raised the prize to 5000, and Imperial Fire did 10+ seconds within 24 hours!
That too with a paper plane, something I never expected.
The next day I started the Lunchbox contest, (and provided kits at cost), and to my delight the prize winners did 20, 30, and 40 second flights!

Things have been dull since covid and DGCA restrictions. I’ve flown only twice in the last two years.

So maybe it’s time for a new contest...

Like PAYLOAD?

So many colleges participating in SAE but no news here on RCINDIA. Pity.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

1. A 1 minute (minimum) qualifying flight with take off from ground, a circuit, and landing close to the takeoff point, carrying a payload

2. Using the most easily available (and cheap) generic 2212 motors, 20 or 30 amp Esc, and 3s lipo

3. Best ratio of flight ready aircraft weight with payload/ flight ready aircraft without payload wins

I don’t know if this will be around 1.5 or much more!

I’d be grateful for suggestions from members.

Thanks and regards
(I’ll offer prizes as usual, within my capability)

Its sad to see, there have been no responses to this even after a month.

I've always been interested in payload maximization type competitions. I will give it a try by modifying my Volantex Phoenix.

The requirements regarding the motor are a bit fuzzy to me, but in my current interpretation, I see it as a size limitation to 2212 or so.
If this is going to be the case, I believe I would not be able to participate because I am not very hopeful of my ability to scratch build a new airframe with the time I have.

A realistic timeline for my entry would probably be by end of october (final flight with max payload)

Looking forward to more activity. I'm confident Rahul roy sir would be able to build something special for this https://myrahulroy.blogspot.com/

Dear Iyer Sir,
Though I am not in Indore, I am presently in Kanpur nevertheless, I will pool in Rs.5000/- as prize money even if 5 people can collect and participate at Indore under your guidance and supervision. It is an interesting subject, but the airframe should be scratch built so that an element of aerodynamics gets involved in selecting aerofoils with high lift coefficient and low drag coefficient. I hope I am not getting too technical.

Hi everyone,

Notwithstanding lack of response in this thread, I do occasionally get requests to run a contest like I used to.

So I’ll share some ideas for consideration by forum members. Feedback is welcome.

1. Rules should be as simple as possible. Or even simpler...

2. Take off, circuit and landing with with minimum flight duration of 1 minute

3. Only fixed wing RC. No drones, helis, vtol, paramotors, pure gliders

4. Landing near release point, say within 50meters

5. Highest ratio of gross weight (with payload) to net weight (without payload, but flight ready with batteries/ full tank) wins

6. No restriction on model size.

7. Participants to fly at their own local sites. Like a postal contest.

8. Entire flight including weighing before and after to be recorded/posted in a single continuous unedited video.

9. Weights to be confirmed by one forum member in addition to the participant.

10. Entry fee Rs 500

11. Prizes. Slaerom offered 5k. I’ll match it. If there are 5 entries, the kitty will be 12.5k.
Prize money can be 5k, 3k, 2k, 1k, 0.5k etc, depending on kitty. To adjust so that every participant who makes a qualifying flight, gets at least his entry fee back as a reward!

12. Entire competition and all flights to be done, filmed, and posted on Youtube on a single day

Did I say simple?

Other sponsors are welcome to offer cash, models, kits, etc.
will reduce the load on Slaerom and me, and/or boost the prize list.

Please do respond. Just saw that despite only 4-5 responses, over 14000 views. Wow!

Regards
Iyer

I am in .
I will suggest if we can compile all the rules on one post.
will be easy to understand.

Still in idea stage awaiting feedback.
The tentative rules ARE in one post.

Are there any constrains on Kv raitings?
Also Prop Size?

Did you find any such restrictions?

Sir,
There are a few more conditions i suggest we should incorporate ;
1. The model should be scratch built.
2. The participant must post a picture of his model at the time of registering.
3. Only the registered model will be allowed for the competition.
4. There should be a cut-off date for entry and participation.
5. Senior forum members can have their interested school/college going kids to participate.

Thankyou so much for hosting the challenge. Rci did it.
I agree, I should have split the 5k as you suggested among multiple contetants, maybe another member could have cracked 14 seconds too !!

I hope to land myself in my first job soon and hopefully give back to rci community by hosting a similar challenge. :-)
Once again thankyou for hosting the challenge. 🚀

@Imperial Fire

Here’s your chance!

Iyer

😍 KK sir glad to see the challenge encouraging us to push the envelope.  i still remember the previous challenge was so much fun.
exciting challenge once again. i am thinking an aircraft with long chord and thick wings and a nice slow and large prop might do the trick friends.
Unfortunately i am staying away from home now and cannot fly in city :-(
however i would like to contribute 1K to the prize  money kitty please if i can.
hope we get lots of videos in this competition :)
