Title: SMALL PRIZE CONTEST
Post by: K K Iyer on April 03, 2019, 07:23:50 PM
Hi everyone,
I had proposed this contest a month or so back, but delayed it at the request of young members facing exams. I was told that the exams end on 3rd April.

So here we go...
Start date: 4th April. Closing date 30th April midnight.

Early Bird prize in each category for the FIRST member to post a video on RCI of a flight meeting/exceeding the minimum stipulated goal, flown during the contest period. The model may have been built earlier, but the flight must be on or after 4th April, ie, tomorrow onwards till 30th.

The prizes, categories and goals are:
1. Rs 1000 for the first 10+ second flight by a hand launch chuck glider
2. Rs 2000 for the first 20+ second flight by a hand/catapult launched glider
3. Rs 3000 for the first 60+ second by a rubber power/hand/catapult launch free flight mode
4. Rs 4000 for the first 120+ second flight by an RC/FF glider (50m towline or 10m rubber histart)
5. Rs 5000 for the first 120+ second flight with solar power motor/controls (no onboard battery)

Note that these goals are not hard to achieve! So newbies should try.

Happy to report that Saikat sir and ssk320 (Suman sir from the US) offered to co-sponsor.
So we have 2 additional prizes in each category.

After the Early Bird prize, equal prize to the two highest duration flights (in the category) with flight video posted on RCI by the deadline. The only condition is that the duration must exceed that of the Early Bird winner of that category.

So, ladies and gentlemen, best of luck. On your marks, get set, go!

Disclaimer: This has no commercial connection. Iím an old aeromodeller and a pensioner doing what I can to encourage grassroots low cost aeromodelling. Iím grateful that two members offered to co-sponsor. I know that there a few old time aeromodellers waiting to sponsor, if such contests generate enough interest...

I will donate a prize too, for the most innovative rubber powered scratch build. The prize will depend on the location of the winner, ie if he is local in my area it may be a model airframe, or if outstation some goodies. Winner to be decided by Mr. Iyer

Nidheesh does have a point - many competitive and entrance exams in April May. Request Mr. Iyer to extend

Sir, I agree with Nidheesh.
I just Got through 12th standard. Even though I am not appearing for any competitive exams, all other friends are quite busy with them. So will be the case with other Senior Secondary Students.
I'm in Though.

Problem statement, eh?
We are getting affected by the SAE High Lift competitions, where all Indian teams have great Ďproblem statementsí and other paper work, but NO ONE RECORDED A FLIGHT, as far as Iím aware.
My requests to SAE teams have produced no response.
http://www.rcindia.org/rc-events/sae-contests/

So you can even consider a prize for the Best Problem Statement NOT Supported by a flight!

Ha Ha, never meant to offend anyone here. This is the trend now a days and no harm picking up some new slang Sir.
I mean to say you can decide the category, it would be great if the prize is given to a female so that girls can also come forward in this hobby.

2. Rs 2000 for the first 20+ second flight by a hand/catapult launched glider
3. Rs 3000 for the first 60+ second by a rubber power/hand/catapult launch free flight mode

and sir i even tried to pm you but your inbox is full

I made these without any plans or blueprints

How about I send you a glider balsa kit. Would you make that fly ?!

Title: Re: SMALL PRIZE CONTEST
Post by: mansel on May 26, 2019, 09:25:18 PM
Maybe later, thankyou.first ill try again with some foam(thermocol) tomorrow.NEVER GIVE UP
And i designed and built about 5 rc planes ,hover they did not fly very well now found out that the lateral balance was off and i didnt hava aerolns on it so after a short flight it banked right and crashed,
But im building a new one now WITH AEROLONS, so lets see.
By the way i started designing rc planes when i was 10yrs old,but that didnt fly.i didnt know about brushless motors or hobby grade tx/rx then,so i tried to make iy from a toy rc car.i've come a long way since.i now have a working, flying rc quad(450) that i designed and built from scratch,i also have a working rc boat that i built.
Soooo....

Yeah.

Mansel, you miss the point. Why another category?
The objective is to record a flight above a minimum duration target of 20, 30 seconds,
Irrespective of the material or design.

You have a little over 2 hours to record and post on RCI, a hand launch chuck glider flight.
After midnight today, these special prizes are withdrawn.

But you have till 30th June for the main contest.
If you donít have any balsa or foam, get some.
Or use some innovative material!
Try, try. Else weíll never Make in India!
Everyone is designing all great things, but no one has demonstrated a simple 10 sec flight...
Why not accept docsreeís offer, and attempt a 10 sec flight?
Best of luck.

Title: Re: SMALL PRIZE CONTEST
Post by: K K Iyer on May 27, 2019, 08:07:16 PM
@mansel,
Donít depend on opinion of others.
Experiment. And go by your own observations.
Did you try out your model?
Was it stable or went off to one side or the other?
How long did it fly?
How far did it go?
Does it have too much drag?
Can we build a less draggy model with depron?
Or even with disposable dinner plates?

a) For successful flight we need stability in (1) pitch (up/down), (2) yaw (straight flight forward) and (3) roll (ability to recover from one wing down)
Roll stability is provided by dihedral, which is absent on your model.

b) For duration, we need a clean, low drag design. Not thick wings, tail, fuselage.

Can you please see this thread?
http://www.rcindia.org/kites-trains-free-flight-and-all-others/1st-chuck/msg290917/#msg290917

Best wishes.

Post by: mansel on May 27, 2019, 10:51:41 PM
Thanks for your reply and advice.ill try to make it more aerodynamic,
And it flies straight, but only tried it indoors
Will try it outside tomorrow
And will try to add dihedral...
Biu what do you think, for a beginner in gliders how does it look, considering i designed and sanded the wing(its not bent) and did not use any plans?

Title: Re: SMALL PRIZE CONTEST
Post by: K K Iyer on May 28, 2019, 09:36:43 PM
Opinions canít add duration to your flight.
All you need is to exceed 10 seconds for the first prize.
Just try it yourself!
Can your models manage a 10+ sec flight?
You donít need opinions of others to check that.
Go ahead and fly.
In case you find they canít do even 10 seconds, youíll have to rethink your approach.
(Hint: Cleaner, slimmer models with a lot less drag. Iíve given you several pointers earlier, no?)

Best wishes

You could try depron, glass fibre covered thermocol, carbon fibre fuselage etc.
But the simplest is balsa.

Try whatever you have, till you cross 5 seconds. Then try balsa.

Hi,
Thereís hardly any response and not a single entry.
But for those who may have missed the thread, and may be interested, here are the main points again. Closing date for posting videos is midnight 30th June.

Conclusion:

2. No one is interested in such stuff
3. THERE IS NO ONE IN INDIA WHO CAN PUT UP EVEN A 10 SECOND FLIGHT!
