Title: Engine and prop questions
Post by: flying doc on March 10, 2010, 10:01:07 PM
Options make confusion?
I need a glow 46 engine for
1. Deb SPAD
2. Low wing trainer Balsa
3 SPA3d

What would be a good choice as in make OS 46, ASP52, or something else. Cost being a consideration also.

Also what would be the right size props for the above planes? 11X7, 11X6?? Considering that I'm new to this hobby which prop should I go in for? MAS, APC, or what?
Waiting for all ur revving advise.

If you can afford it, go for OS.  There is a real reason why they are the most widely used glow engines across the world.  Some people have had great results with other brands, but everyone (OK, don't sue me for this; so almost everyone) has had extremely good results with OS.

I have seen multiple people struggle with the tuning of ASP, Magnum and TT engines.  Have seen couple of people struggle with tuning of YS engines also, and those are considered on-par or better than OS.

As this is always a debated issue on how good the non-OS engines hold up against OS, I would solicit comments from others.  And the comments should reflect not only their personal experience, but also feedback from others in their fields.

I do see ASP having a good following in India, and a big reason for that is cost.

About the props, there are usually a range of prop sizes that each engine supports.  A lot of times, it is your flying style that determines the prop, but the default suggested for the engine should be good for general purposes.

The most common props in size range on our fields are APC and MasterAirScrew.

ASP52 has got good reviews, so, I guess it should be good.

With ASP52 or OS 46 AX:
Deb -> 10 x 6, 11 x 6
Low wing trainer -> 10x6, 11 x 6
Spad3d -> 12.25 x 3.75
