Title: started my first turbine.
Post by: asupan on February 14, 2013, 12:25:43 AM
I started my turbine for the first time today without any help. will post the picture of my test jig later. It is a Wren MW54 mk3 manual start. Great joy as it started after 20 tries. Finally started at 10 30pm. I had purchased it 2 years back and was lying idle for that long.
It finally started with the last of propane butane gas left in the tank and with a torch at the back to ignite the gas. i realised later that I should have primed the line but what a sound. Hope my neighbours were not asleep. I took it to full rpm so was quite noisy.
I can sleep well today as I struggled to get the turbine oil, propane/butane mix, then then startrmotor failed etc.  I will put this in a boomerang intro and fly in coming week.
cheers

I did try to make a video but after 7 attemt to start my wife gave up recording it. I managed to call her back once the engine started and shot a few minutes. I uploaded in the youtube of one of the failed starts. one while running and the shutdown. Don't mind my dress and the quality of video as it was late at night. I had lots of learnings from these failed attempts.
Being able to start manually is another fun. Able to make out the pop of the ignition, when to stop the starter, when to remove the propane etc are some of the steps in a correct start. when this was started by Wren Engineers then it looked so easy, I was more than confident when they demonstrated as they started it first time but when I had to do it here without them then it is a completly different story. I hopeto take these learnings of 1st session for my second start session tomorrow afternoon.
i will load the links of youtube shortly.
cheers

Just an update on my second start.

I managed to hot start the turbine. This was due to not charging the battery for the starter motor after my first session. The starter motor could not bring the rpm high enough and the fuel pump had full flow as the exhaust temp went more than 850 degrees. excess fuel and not enough rpm resulted in a hot start. As the motor was not rotating so the cooling was not enough and had to use the fire extinguisher to cool off.
I have managed to record the whole thing. I have charged the batteries today and will try again.
cheers,
Asutosh
