Hey guys, just interested to know if ,anyone has made or attempted to make jet turbines out of automotive turbochargers.I thought I could use my vacation to build a turboshaft  engine (twin shaft,such that the low pressure turbine is coupled to a transmission)and probably mount it on a home made rc car.Basically the idea is to construct a low pressure turbine behind the exhaust end of the  turbocharger based turbojet.
Since the low pressure end is expected to spin at RPMs similar to that of the baja 5b's 2 stroke gas engine,I will be able to mount the baja 8000RPM centrifugal clutch directly behind the shaft and obtain shaft horsepower which can be further geared down if necessary .The suspension would be non- independent 4 link ,with the axle made out of ttr sparrowhawk diffs and drive shafts.(i will be running baja wheels).My biggest challenge is to enable the vehicle to handle immense weights(the turbocharger itself weighs 10kgs).  Untill now there is not much progress other than the purchase of the turbocharger itself and a couple of sketches.Please put up any ideas or suggestion that u may have acquired from some kind of experience with jet turbines.

Wrong Brothers



I tried myself and never succeeded... Apart from mechanism and precise workmanship, it requires strong metallurgy (both knowledge and accessiblity), which nobody shares..

If you are genuinely wanna do it, just search forum, threre is a thread going on Jet engines.

Thanks for your motivation and since the turbocharger itself behaves as part of the turbine,u dont have to worry about the metal components ,except for the combustion chamber.

It's glad to see another person successfully accomplishing the feat of building an self made turbocharger based turbine, in India.I sincerely appreciate your hard work and success...wish u good luck and take care.

Since u have the experience of running it,i hope u can answer one of my ever annoying question .......Is there a need for making the the spark plug gap extremely large or instead dump loads of gas to achieve a smooth and continious ignition??,but IF UR STARTING USING LIQUID FUEL,do  you use an atomized type of injection or a evaporator tube or maybe just an moderate spray nozzle??

Last year I also started to build jets I build 10 of them
Some were axial some were centrifugal having different
Stages.only centrifugal compressor worked they worked
For 1 min it was very great before aluminum got melted.
I didn't got any other material to build outer covering body.

Hi

As I am using liquid fuel(Keroscene/ Diesel) and i made this engine to run on any fuel. so i have to make a bigger spark and that was even good fun to develop that spark. and yes i made the atomisation injectors for liquid fuel but it is also compatible with gasius fuels.

plz ask i some one needs help on this.

Abhay,it is interesting to know that u have worked on quite a lot of turbine engines.I believe axial flows,must have been made from scratch(huge proccess!!).i too attempted making them ,but my build was too impractical and it did not end up well.Well,i wish u a very good luck and keep up the progress.

hi gan its intreresting to see the pics its too good..... i nearly made it 2yrs ago after that becoz of job i am not able to work on it that regularly. but now i am thinging to complete the bike by this year.
i never tried it with gaseous foue that would be more easy but hard to buid bike with that and also dengerous to work with. If need any help ask becoz its little bit dengerous to work on these thing.
may be we can race some day

It has been a long time since, I took to post any advancements on this thread.Now that i have done quite some work on building and studying various related topics,i think its time i post some new images.....
u can notice the new oil system comprising of a chain driven pump and  an oil filter,the green hose is removed and a new automotive hose has been purchased(however, a lot of modifications are required to make a good fit),ignition will be done by means of two coils which is a boost from the previous single coil,a coat  of jet black has been given been to the combustion chamber and even the oil drain from the turbine has been reinforced.The only decline(discovered recently) is that, the oil seals on the turbo have failed,causing a bad leak from the turbine side...i just hope i can repair it soon(the compressor being stuck on the shaft is currently an other hindrance) and see it run!

Hi Gan

Long time to talk to u, nice work. the oil seal can be cured, i myself made a full seal housing for turbine shaft to minimise the size. it is easy and fun to make it.
Just try and keep urself calm. i got lot of troubles while making it. now due to job i am not able to work on it. also i am getting married so i am spending time with my fiance.

Thank you ChetanSharma,i have aldready done some research on turbo oil seals and just like u say ,the only solution is a homemade fix or atleast it would be better than contracting this repair to a service shop(there are quite a few shops that specialize in turbocharger repair swithin Bangalore,but it always a hard time negotiating with them).I also found that the magnitude of the leak is not too destructive and that it suffers no leak in the compressor section(where the latter might cause an engine runaway),so i will rather attempt to start it(if the other corresponding parts dont fail!) without the fixture and heal  the seal later....ANYWAY I WISH YOU BEST LUCK WITH YOUR MARRIAGE BROTHER!! Now i can see my engine taking a  good shape but of course with some minor complications(small or big...a complication is a complication!! Grin)the oil seal problems still continue to be a issue , and the most harmfull of all issues is safety..there is no way to run a jet engine in my diminutive house with absolutely no ventilation or any means of fire extinguishment at disposal...here are the updated pictures also included with a brand new oil filter.
