Gusty and myself tried two Lady birds one with AP 0.09 and one with Thunder tiger GP 0.07 and Cox 0.049 Sure start. The Lady Bird with AP 0.09 did amazingly well.

However my TT GP 0.07 was having huge starting Issue either due to wrong glow plug or poor setup. Decided to try with a Cox 0.049 which was barely able to keep it airborne so decided to make this smaller model.

550mm Wing Span Biplane with coro AUW is 370gms Should fly I hope.

Thanks Arun.

With 6x4 APC prop it is Max RPM achieved is only 12000. Static thrust is working out only 250 Gms. i.e Thrust to weight ratio of just 0.67.

Gusty what say launch it before you reach here  Wink

I am sure once airborne RPM will peak more.

Engine is mounted using wood self tapping screw on a wooden former made out of 1/2 cm lite ply former. Since Cox has a peculiar air inlet at the back its mounted on a two lite ply rail stuck on the former which accommodates the air intake in the groove formed in between.

Thanks

cost of coro is negligible. The cost is only of the Cox engine, accessories, servo, BEC, receiver and such electronics.

would say

1. Rs 1100/- for engine
2. Rs 400/- for fuel tank and accessories
3. Rs 300 each for servos four of them say Rs 1200/-
4. Rs 300 for BEC.
5. Rs 350 for a 2S Lipo.
6. Rs 2300/- for receiver.

Say total approx Rs 6000/-

The Engine was bought from Cox Engine Web site Canada. Don't remember the shipping, it was through Priority Mail USPS so not much say about $5 that was with other accessories for engine. No customs though. Other parts bought from Indian LHS like RC Bazaar, RC Dhamaka both Bangalore based and my favorites.

Happy is a man whose hobby is his profession

Hi Sundaram

If I remember correctly, you have purchased the AP 09 from hobbyking, haven't you. Can you please share your experience for the same. How is the engine running and what is the power from the engine.

Also what size plane is suitable for it.

I had bought the AP 0.15 from HK yet to be mounted on a model. AP 0.09 is gusty's. which is one of the very nice small engines. easily starts with just hand flick of the prop. has good power too. Not really measured the RPM with Prop sizes next time we run it, will update some more info.

Yesterday we mounted the AP 0.09 on one Gusty's foamy piper cub bought from HK. The ARF was itself very nice made of EPS and with all necessary hardware, excluding electronics. The piper was meant for electric but we mounted the AP 0.09 on it . Engine started with some effort because not run for some time, and cold climate. However once started it just continued till tank empty like a charm.

Maiden may be tomorrow.

Gusty would request you to do the honors of posting the photographs and video clip please.

PS : we were early for the sweepstakes. now we have to build one more I suppose  Wink.

Yes Sir I have really started loving the way IDOL is flying. Thats why making one more model like the one above with cox.

Today we flew IDOL in some wind condition too. it was fantastic.

Talking nitromethane.
You borrow from Gusty ten times as much as i borrow from Harveer!

Incidentally, when we were running Cox Babe Bees, we hadn't even heard of nitro!
We just ran 80:20.
One 3 in 1 can of fuel lasted one entire Sunday! Whether C/L or FF

@wingmanbunty
What do you want to buy?
Cox engines?
There is a long history. You can find it on the net.
Try. You will enjoy.
We got our first Cox .049 in 1968-69.
Still have 1 or 2.

@ wingmanbunty

If you have Paypal then the second store Ex-Model Engine is a sure supplier to India.

http://stores.ebay.ca/XENALOOK/Cox-Engines-/_i.html?rt=nc&_fsub=21108637&_sid=476927475&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=2

Hobby King is also a new source of Cox engine

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__251__55__Gas_Glow_Engines_parts-Glow_Engines.html

In ebay.in you can get one at slightly higher cost within India.

@sundaram sir,
$60-90 for a Babe Bee? Wow.
I think i'll just stick with my 40 year old originals.
That always turned 6x3s without nitro as we never had any.
Even flown RC single channel with a tired .049 turning a Tornado 7x4 after lot of persuasion.

Iyer Sir,

The baby bee at 60-90$ is modified high performance engines which can reach 22000 RPM with 5x3 3 blade props & 25% Nitro. Its worth the buy.

A Cox surestart at $32 including shipping is what I use which can reach 18000 RPM with 5x3 Prop and 25% Nitro.

Even without Nitro and with 6x4 Prop still touched 11000 RPM and is fun to fly slow and steady.

Davies diesel head? Never seen one, only heard of.
Found 2 Cox's dismantled for cleaning maybe 5-10 years ago.

You need to trawl through my junk in lucknow, to find a WenMac, DC Merlin, ED Racer, Russian team race engines etc.

A while back had requested Anwar sir to start an 'Old Timer' board.
He never told me that he would, but he did.
That board is lonely now.
Maybe some of this stuff should move there.

Ailerons added and Engine test run done once. Successful maiden flight done today. Though Engine reed valve was not at all in its perfect performance. Engine was firing away with heavy hiccups. Videos follows.

My Thunder Tiger GP 0.07 had a huge starting and inconsistent running issue. I had almost decided to sell it off at a throw away price or gift it to someone. However every time I used to hold back myself from dumping this engine thinking who ever gets it going to curse me forever.

Had nearly an year of battle with this engine of inconsistent running and unable to resolve the needle settings between a Flooding in idle and lean engine cut out at the Full RPM . I could merely get this engine to run for only few mins every time before it used to cut out on me either due to rich or lean and some times exhaust flooding. I was not able to home on to a particular needle setting. I was going up and down between a 2.5 turns to 4.5 turns of High speed needle. suffered innumerable painful attempts to even get that first ignition of engine.

After reading experiences of many online and few modification to the engine now the engine fires without missing a beat between 3500 to 15500 on a 6x3.5 on a GF Nylon Master airscrew prop. High Speed Needle 3.5 Turns full RPM.

Modifications to the engine are

I have replaced the exhaust pressure Nipple to a bigger dia brass nipple from a 3 way fuel line connector.

I have Dremel grind-ed the throttle spindle opening at the Carb to a bigger dia equal to the venturi opening.

Added a silicon fuel tubing to the HS Needle to make it air tight and more tight needle as it was getting loose after four turns of opening to start.

Drilled a small 2mm hole in Exhaust before the muffler to drain the unburnt Caster easily.

This however always needs a starter to start but within two flicks with a starter after Priming it starts consistently now. Hand starting is still not easy for me.

Rich setting bench run.

At optimum 3.5 turns of HS Needle this engines fires an amazing 15500 RPM on a 6x3.5 Prop with just 10% Nitro Fuel. Impressive!!!.  This one is going to replace the Cox from the Idol.   Clap Clap

5% Nitro.  5x3 prop should give 13000-14000 on sure start.  But fresh fuel only. Old performance may deteriorate.

@ Sahil AP 0.09 is definitely better. I have used Gusty's Engine and was very happy with the way it performed. It could easily start in a hand flick and had good power too.
