Title: 50 size Cessna 182 from FLYRC
Post by: Verma on November 07, 2010, 06:35:37 PM
Yesterday I received my Cessna 182 50 from FlyRC @ Praveen. Couldn't believe how beautiful it is and its big.. The package was well packed, had no damage as was shipped by TNT, and I did not track it. Instead I was pleasantly surprised by a call from Praveen a mere ten minutes prior to delivery of the plane. Here are some pictures.

Thanks Praveen. Can't wait to fly it

Building Tips:
1.) Just ensure you do not use too much of flaps on her. I had a stall experience on the SAME model. Install a min 52 or maybe a 60 on it.
2.) The landing gear as per the manual would lean a little forward. By installing this way, the CG may shift towards the tail and the model starts sitting on its tail on the ground. To correct this, just install the landing gear leaning backwards (i.e. swap left and right gears) However, I suggest to dry fit and check.
3.) The quality of the ARF is undoubtly great, but you need to take care on the weight. She will come out heavy than expected. The landing gear however I feel is weak to take that load. Try and see if you can fabricate the gear in Aluminium. The supplied gear is fibre.

All the best

Thank You CrazyPilot. So far I am going to go in for a Glow plug Engine. How did re engining your trainer with electric motor work out?

Thank you Saurab Srivastava for your advise. Will keep it in mind. I was planning to go in for a 0.46 cu in size glow. You think it will be underpowered?

And thanks again Praveen.

OS 46AX may be just on the dot. Suggest you install a OS 55AX or maybe an ASP52 will also do. You will have good performance on ASP 60A and plenty of power to pull through a stall.  ;)

But remember, if using an ASP, ensure that it is braken-in nicely. ASP is known to give trouble if NOT broken-in properly. :banghead: Have plenty of running on the ground and only then take her up....

All the best for your build and first flight.   Incase you need any further  :help:, you may PM me.  :)

Cheers !!!

Not sure if it is just a set of personal experiences, but I have found that these smaller Cessnas less than say .60 size (both small electrics and others) are less stable compared to other high wingers.

Saurabh... did you feel so ?

You are correct Anwar. At low speeds, these get quite unstable, however at high speeds they are fine. But the charm is to fly them really low at slow speeds and do some graceful passes... this is where they loose... :)

Also, they need a bit powered landing as the stall speed is on the higer side. A little Flaps help.

Thanks once again Saurabh , and from what both you and Anwar have said, I guess I shouldn't imagine it to be as stable or docile as a 0.46 high wing trainer. But, when you mention unstable do you mean in roll or in pitch?

Thanks for the heads up Anwar , I would like your experience on the unstable part too.

But, when you mention unstable do you mean in roll or in pitch?

By unstable, I would refer to an unwanted unpredictable action. For Eg: if you do not give enough power with the flaps down, it is bound to get stall... but you never know which wing will dip. This model is not very aggressive. It is docile but not as easy and forgiving as a HW trainer. You will notice that the model will respond slow to the aileron etc. Basically I would call it a lazy model.  :sleepy:

So you can well imagine a fat lady floating in the air.  :giggle:

That pretty much says it all.  I felt that such models needed to be run fairly fast, which can become an issue during landing.  You will need some speed, which can cause bumpiness (or issues with the landing gears if they are not built tough).

I always wondered if this can be categorized as a high-wing trainer at all.  It is more like a reduced scale version of the original, with unique flying characteristics.

Thank you Saurabh

Thank you Anwar

Very helpful advise.

By the way Saurabh, do you still have and fly the 'fat old lady' :giggle:? If yes, then maybe I can provide a simple solution (theoretical) but will work well to solve the problems as you said and maybe I will incorporate in my model and let you know the result. (I will take time to get an engine). It should make the lazy model wake up a bit at slow speed. I'll do a little more research and let you know (solved the problem in a trainer aircraft (a real one, not RC) with this solution and it worked wonders). Catch you guys a little late in the morning, if interested. Ok?

Wonder if your proposed solution has anything to do with "VG"s  8-)

Verma, I have flown a actual Cessna 182 and it was fun .... not too sure about the RC Model, but the actual one is smooth as silk when in air....I flew it after training on a Cub and it was like driving an Accord after a M800...

Some people have all the luck.. would have loved to fly one of these. Do share your experience with the other members of the forum.

Good God!! You are so perceptive and knowledgeable Anwar :o. Yes, I was referring to 'Vortex Generators'
http://www.google.co.in/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=vortex+generators&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=esrYTIzUEYbuuAOwrZmeCg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=2&ved=0CCsQsAQwAQ&biw=1280&bih=834
Just 'Google' them up. They can be very simple on this model. After going back home I had a closer look at the wing and the Aerofoil- which is on the thinner side, guess to keep it scale looking and with Reynolds Number and all its complexity, just simply add small buttons on the max camber line. They can even be the 'tich' buttons used on blouses (for the fat lady) 8-) :giggle:. That should keep her more responsive with a higher alpha for stall and consequently lower speed of stall.

That is just a part of the payback for this forum... being here and being able to take from the collective knowledge of a lot of people who are much smarter than me has certainly improved my understanding of not just RC, but everything related to flying !

Thanks for the offer :) Yes, we do have the fat lady. But on her second flight, we had a stall at 3 feet above the ground and she cartwheeled. :giggle: some portion of the wing was damaged. Though it is very much repairable, it is with Kapil (Owner of the lady ;)) I dont think he has started any repairs on her so far... Should be a day's job.
As for your model, I would suggest to fly her stock first, observe her tendencies and characterstics and then upgrade to VG. I have seen the VG website and is quite interesting. :) No doubt you have them on small 3D foamies being sold at HK. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8472

First from Fly Rc perhaps. I assembled and flew my Cessna (the same CMPro) several months ago. It is certainly NOT a trainer and very sluggish. A real looker though (very unlike fat ladies) !!
