Title: build log: CURARE .40
Post by: AEROVISHWA on September 08, 2012, 11:23:54 PM
After a long wait for my fav. model Finally got my hands on the CURARE Kit from PVA models. the kit is complete but needs a few mods again as this is the prototype. and he will start manufacture soon....

all in all an excellent design .. by the great HANS and HANNO PRETTNER (http://moleski.net/rc/toc.htm) .

the ribs came along with the alignment jig and if any one wondered what the holes in it were for ( if u thought for lighting u are wrong) its for the conventional rod JIG assy.... will elaborate during the build pics...

in the fuselage planks, is the front balsa is kept hard, like i can see in your images?
asking for my own knowledge, since ill be jumping on to balsa probably..

its not hard balsa... its solid ply....!

Lite Ply Doubler under end to end Balsa Sheeting on the Fuse is a proven design. Planking two different woods is a risky proposition. Was this in the original design or you are experimenting? Hope you have Longerons for structural strength.  All the best and give the feedback on this design.

whats the reason for doing so?? just to get a hard surface for engine mount vibrations or is it to sustain craches??

there will be longerons through out and for the double wood join is that there will be internal reinforcement for the entire joint...!

Good show! Eureka aircrafts also have a kit for lots of classic pattern, and you could even get foam wing and tail (for many) cores for them.

Aerovishwa are you sure its a Curare because you have the plan on the table which says Minare.  :)
The Curare is a .60 size model (Because this was flow by Hanno in the TOC).
The specs of the Curare are:
Wing Span: 64"
Length: 56 3/4"
Wing Area: 697 sq. in.
Flying Weight: 3300-3600 grams.

What you are building is a MINARE.

The below photo is of the Curare.

yep u are right.... curare was originally a .60 size with flaps and speed brakes... and the .40 version was called mini+curare = minare

later all the models were named curare ( in versions .40,.60.90) with developed foam core wing and the stabs. and FG fuse...

we are following the curare scaled down to .40 size... the plan is different just using it as reference.. but the plane is smaller than the plan....

to place capstrips - once you butt glue them they will be flush and glue
surface area will be more - well thought out design

This is turning out to be a classic build. I can just imagine the smell around work place. Balsa and adhesive. Nostalgic!

By the way, wasn't Curare a kind of poison/drug that the Aztecs used in their blow gun darts? Remember reading about it in Tintin and the Broken Ear, if I am not mistaken.

curare means  ARROW POISON.....

Slight correction, it means Arrow Poison and not Poisoned Arrow.

Anyway, forget it, concentrate on the beautiful model.

My bad... :banghead:

ok... so the two halves have been mated.... and the wing in kinda ready...

Applied two coats of dope on the leading edge and sheeting, waiting to dry... and some more parts of the fuse to come in...

some final finish remains....

finally the build continues...!

1> fuse outer done

abbas the pic 2 and 3 are for u
2> strips for aliron
3> ready aliron.

the fuse is not come as perfect as expected, the turtle deck is short... only reason i got the kit from a idiot person who knows nothing of aeromodelling and does not know on how to do business.

Don't tell me you are going to convert her into a pusher or a high winger? That would be sacrilege. Or do you plan to remove the nose wheel and give her a tail wheel?  :headscratch:

i am not that psycho to convert such a beauty into a  tail dragger, high winger, or a pusher.. a simple conversion  may be...!

increase the control surface - make it 3D compatible?????

Anyway, its a beauty.... looking for some kits locally myself.

cap-strips do glue on to the sheet..!

When I was a kid (40 years ago!) we would rub a candle base on the plan, especially the areas where glue would come in contact. Don't know if that is still relevant :)

When I was a kid (40 years ago!) we would rub a candle base on the plan

did not do that.. but when i have a original plan i do cover it up with plastic and tape the edges.... if its a printed from PDF.. i don't care.. sometimes i even cut it to get templates....

Where is the picture of the Finished plane ??I heard you had a riot flying it at a Tech Fest!!!

the plane is not completed, updating it as its being done... and that was no riot flying.... its was simple flying with the royal guard...

need a help from u blore guys... please help me hunt PRADEEP VIJAY... PVA Models... he is suppose to send me around 10 sheets for the same plane... its all held up because of that A****LE....

The CURARE 40 (as it was called then, in the early 80's) was my first - and I would say - the best aerobatic plane I have flown. Powered by an OS 40 FSR with a "MAGIC MUFFLER", it would go wherever you pointed it, like a well trained dog, yet without any vices. The  The kit was by MK, who were arguably one of the finest kit makers. I also hold the dubious distinction of using ONLY cyanoacrylate glue for assembly, including the firewall/bearers. Fellow modellers thought I was nuts but the plane went through 250+ flights.

The top sheet ended short because the wing was COMPLETELY sheeted , top and bottom. With the high quality balsa from MK, it became an extremely light yet rigid structure.

One tip from experience. The fuselage sides need a doubler starting for a few cms. fore and aft of the trailing edge position.  It is a weak area otherwise.

not doublers but strip added....

pics of the tail...

Hey Ujjwaana. What happened to your Amp build?
I promised myself not to publish Hung/Stuck builds. interestingly, few other balsa planes got completed before my first planes - the Amp - Bonsai DLG and Horten Elli are the two already finished. Right now I am working on Calmato 46 Sports Low winger and just started covering the plane and hope to maiden it in a 2 weeks time.

its been painted and stuffed inside the cupboard for the past 1 1/2 year or more.

got my self into some work and finding no time to build or fly these.

anyone interested in continuing can take this as well as few other planes off my hand will be happy to give them. ( at a throwaway price of course)
