Title: High wing Nitro trainer using Thermocol, bamboo, and mirandi, and waste paper.
Post by: abhay on June 05, 2011, 08:05:18 PM
Hello rc lovers,

Here is the build log of my new RC trainer. In fact, the fuselage is the repaired version of previous crashed model.
Servo placements have been modified.
Bamboo sticks has been used as pushrods.

wing, as usual by Aluminium reinforced Thermocol.
Covered the wing with waste papers, which gives strength to the structure, and provides with drammatic extra stiffness.
Ive projected some sketch pen pipes outward, to act as hinges to add ailerons.

finally modified the fuselage. added a cockpit as wellto make wing more high.

I tried gift wrapping sheets but they dont work..

new landing gear installed.(landing gear were very small and used to get stuck in grass. )

Only covering required. will post pictures by tomorrow

Nice attempt!
Couple of suggestions and questions as well.
1. The model looks to be 40 size, now your main undercarriage is bolted to a wodden plate which I assuem would be glued to the fuse. From the first picture, it appears that the plate is in contact with the lower side longeron alone (and maybe a cross member). I would suggest that you add a ply/balsa plate along the sides of this longeron to transfer the landing loads, else the present longeron is prone to failure.
2. Why did you extend the height of the wing mount? Any thought process involved there?
3. What servos are you using, from the looks of the blue servos they look like mini ones, they might be inadequate for a 25-40 size

compleated the fuselage.. covered with paper, then wounded cellotape..

@ flyingboxcar, thaks for your suddestion  :thanks: , i have added a balsa plate along the sides of longeron to transfer the landing loads., i think it was one of the BIGGEST BLUNDER i was making..  :thanks: again
the reason behind using micro servos is obvious the cost.( this is what i had now, and i could not afford standard servos now, may be by the end of this year i could_).. the cost of whole construction including glue, paper, balsa, wheel and spoke is  :Rs:316. I try to minimize the cost as much as i can till the time i am dependent on parents.

The reason behind extending the wing mount is, i need a good stability of high wingers..

the wing is under progress. ill mail the pictured by tomorrow..

Awesome!... now that is a great build. Make sure you have the reinforcements on critical load/stress bearing areas.

tHANKS izmile,
i have kept in mind all structural stresses, moments, and shear as far as i can. 99% of sticks are there for purpose. There was no calculation, but hand tested the model by twisting, pulling, etc, and added members as required..

good going, impressive, dont want to sound like a critic just a suggestion some papermeshed/thermocol padding can give a smoother look. Of course i am not sure about the weight and CG but such a nice effort putin couldnt help my self.

Nice effort ! Nice aeroplane !
But are you sure the servos will be able to take that load ?

thanks saheevan,
i already flew my previous plane using servos.Auw was around 1.45 kg... Actually even i was a bit worried about servos.
Such servos provide about 1.2 kg torque only..
I have seen people flying their planes with AUWs of 3.2-4 kgs with standard servo.
then why cant these work for 1.3 kg( which is expected AUW)

 :hatsoff: {:)} {:)}
Congratulations to you for such a fresh look at building materials. Looks good too

compleated the wings, only ailerons remaining. Ive just kept the wing on model to see how it looks. It resembles an early cessana i guess.

there is some issue with CG(it is lying in the center of wings section), which ill correct by placement of Rx battery.

And one more amazing thing, {:)} keeping the model in sunlight has reduced its weight :). I guess its the moisture of fevicol which evaporated..

And thanks all for appretiation.. :hatsoff: your appretiation works as nitro boost to work on it so rapidly even during final exams..
