Post by: chanvivek on September 04, 2009, 05:39:29 AM
Hey guys,

Got the latest baby into my hangar.. Details as follows,

Airframe : Great Planes U Can Do 3D .46
Engine : YS 63 4 stroke
Servos : Futaba 9151 Digitals (2 for elevator and 1 for rudder), Futaba 3152 (2 for ailerons) and Futaba S3003 for throttle
Receiver : Futaba R617FS

Got the plane from a friend of mine in Chennai fully built and Rx ready.. It is unflown yet.. Planning to maiden it on Saturday..

Looks absolutely gorgeous and also pretty big for a 40 size aircraft.. Would post more about it when she has been maidened and test flown!

Hello

I was sorrtaa lucky to get a great deal from raghu....This is out of my skills as of now but am sure i will get there..

I went to raghu's house today to check the plane and its in perfect condition but the engine has not been run for almost a year now so just wondering if anybody knws any tricks on how to start an engine kept for a long time ?

This is the exact plane raghu has with him , for more details chk this link

The U Can Do has done itself in!!

Low level hovers and engine cuts do not go hand in hand!

Had an engine failure in IIT while trying to hover very low and the plane just fell to the ground!!

The fuselage is in two pieces now.. Would like to sit and repair it though I know for sure that the original performance would never be matched.. Would put up a video of this plane being flown by Guru just before I took over and crashed it!

Chan,

Sorry about the crash. I am sure it should be repairable.

Got a question on the hovering: Where do you look at the model when you do a low altitude hover?. I usually tend to look at the tail feathers and my hovering is not always perfect. Is there an easier way to do that?

BTW, I visited the local RC flying club here and I must say that these guys are rocking!.. Esp, when I saw an old man doing all the 3D stunts with his fliton 330. Just one word.. Incredible!. Given his age, his reflex is way tooo good. The model is powered by a 4S and the power to weight is 1:6!!!
Also saw an electric spitfire with the merlyin engine sound generator. :o

Crashes always stink  :(

Unless you totally trust the engine, low hovers are risky.  Most people gradually reduce the height over 10s of flights.

Hi Ismail,

I generally tend to look at the whole model.. You need a vision of the nose and the wings as well to correct pitch and torque rolls!  It is just a matter of a few days on the sim and you would be hovering like a pro!!

Though I can hover and pilot my plane around in the sim on a hover, I however do not have the same comfort level on the field.. But no doubt, the sim helped.. I would post the videos in a short while and you can see Guru hovering the U Can Do 3D right after takeoff and then I took over and crashed it :)!

The 1:6 power to weight ratio must be a lethal combo!! The 2:1 weight to power ratio on my 50cc with the DA never fails to astonish me.. One whack of the throttle stick and the plane shoots off into the air.. I can only imagine how it would be if the power to weight ratio is 6:1!!

Understandable considering the energy efficiency of Brushless Motors are  around 85 to 90 % as against  engines which even in theory cannot exceed 50 %  .
In fact Saju should be able to throw more light on this , as per what he was explaining  to me some time back there are servo motors for industrial applications which can provide torque upto 4 times that of conventional methods for a short duration.

In fact this could be a subject for a good educational thread  if we take it in the right direction

Industrial servo motors could well have a lot of torque but am not too sure if they could provide the RPM we need.

May be the 1:6 ratio is a bit of an exageration used by the guys at the field. But I witnessed that model fly... I mean it really flew like a rocket on full throttle. It vanishes in the sky on a vertical climb around 5 seconds!! :o .. I was thinking that the model would tear apart.. as most part of the model is just fresh air! - Its so light.

OTH, slow 3D moves were also excellent. Anyone who saw it would ache for it..  (:|~ Also, the man who flew it is a great flyer. :salute:... Next time, I will try to get a video.

Chan,

Thanks for the advice. I would post a video of my hover practise on RF4.5 and let me know your comments.
