Title: OS MAX .46- LA OR AX-ADVICE WANTED
Post by: Verma on November 19, 2010, 10:59:03 AM
I plan to go in for a 0.46 cu in size engine. Can some of the experienced friends throw some light if it is worthwhile to go for a OS MAX .46 LA as compared to the more expensive OS MAX .46 AX? I would appreciate personal experiences on any other engines as well 8-)
 :salute:

If you want to save money then go for a Thunder tiger pro other wise go for OS AX.

If you can get around the possible initial issues, ASP engines are also good value for money.

OS seems to be the Toyota of the glow engine world.

hi,

hope my experience in this is usefull.

i have used both the engines and my experience is that os 46 la is good for beginers into rc.
the 46 la is very mild in power and very good for trainer models.  the only problem is breaking in and getting used to it. you need starter initially but once run in it performs very nicely. i have used one and know very well the problems i went thru initially .

the os 46 ax is good for low wings and sport planes. although u can put it on trainers, but the engine at top speed makes the trainer models very dicy and trainers are supposed to fly in a mild manner.

regds

I will stand by OS .46 AX as its more sturdy and long lasting from my experience.

Not much more in terms of choices, that is probably why !

1.  OS 46 AX
2.  ASP or OS 46 LA
3.  TT

That would be my list, in the order of decreasing quality.

Go for an OS 46AX.... it will surely last you a long time ... and can be considered as a one time investment ;)

Dear Mr. Verma,
You got the best advice in the previous two posts, and I second Anwar on his post above with 3 options and quality decreasing from option 1 to 3. Time to make up your mind  ;)

I think TT pro 46 is much better than OS46 LA in every aspect. OS46 AX is the best choice but its cost is a major setback. If i had to buy a new one i'd go for TT pro 46.

How about ASP 0.52 ?

Mr Verma. I guess you might have already got the answer. IT all depends on your budget and kind of plane you want to use on. The OS LA range and non ringed and have Bushes instead of Bearings - they are good only for planes not demanding instant rush like trainers, Gliders etc. OS FX/AX engines have Bearings and have much more power. They also last long and are equally priced. The TT motors are somewhere in the mid of LA and AX.

A good discussion on the OS engine range could be found at:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1186698&highlight=os+la+fx+ax

and more focused one for choice between LA and AX:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=954687&highlight=os+la+fx+ax

Plan well. If you are new to glow like me, OS LA is a good starting point.

Nitro world does not have a reasonable ripoff world like Hobby King provides for Electrics. There are good LHS like RCDhamak, Rotor.co.in, and Paylessflymore who provide Glow engines in India. If you happen to be forced to get from west, Tower Hobbies price and shipping is unbeatable with the $20-$250 dicount they have almost the year round.

TT has a pretty bad rep on our fields... most people have moved away from them. ASP and even OS LA seems to work better.

Even on the heli side, the people who went to the TT Red Line 53 for higher power have moved back to OS.

Remember that these are personal experiences from different people which would vary, just read between the lines and make a decision.

All transmitters have a throttle control !!

The notion that bearing equipped engines last longer than bushings is a misconception. And please note that I talking pure longetivity and not considering other factors like, power loss, smoothness of transition etc.
And given the fact that most of the fuel have some nitro, bearings are the first to go due to corrosion (unless you have upgraded to ceramic ones) and thus the engine requires work. Bronze bushings would last longer than the steel bearings all other things being equal in the same engine.

As for advice on OS LA Vs AX, assuming that you are ready to spend bit more to get the AX go for it. Once you graduate from your trainer the same AX could power your aerobat
