Heli engines are :

1. Built with bigger heads with fins for better cooling (as there is lack of direct airflow around them in most cases).

2. Tuned for mid (to high) range performance (usually via how the carb is designed).

3. Built for more torque.

Using heli engines on airplanes is OK in general, but using plane engines on helis is not recommended.

Also you would notice that Heli engines typically have
1. The main needle is generally very close to location where you would normally find the prop on an airplane engine
2. Heli engines do not come with the knurled prop hub and drive washer etc.

In the days when Heli were starting to get popular and no purpose made heli engines were availble off the shelf, some mfrs came out with heat sink heads which could be fitted to your normal airplane engine head for better cooling
