Hi There,

A friend was so kind as to send me an Engine, I saw it when i was at his house this summer and so i nagged for it, thus he sent it, I have no knowledge whatsoever of Glow/Gas engines and this is my first time having it. busy improving my skills in the Electric Range but will slowly but surely continue working on the Engine so that by the time i am comfortable with my flying skills i have already collected all that i need. Find attached pictures of the Engine, it is missing a fuel tank. If anybody can help me with getting it working and with the whole journey, I would be gratefull.

The ax manual that Iyer sir mentions and the sig manual are a must must for glow setups... besides these two gems you'd need a fuel tank with clunk and other fittings, glow fuel, fuel pipes, glow ignitor (booster), a chicken stick, glow starter (optional), spinner (optional) for starting this engine. A servo to control throttle and a battery for the rest of the control surface servos, and lots of patience with the engine.

PS: OS 46 AX is a wonderful engine. probably best in its class.

PPS: Preferably take help from someone who's already into glows at a flying field/club. There are a lot of parameters with engines and can be frustrating at times.

Girish sir, I will start collecting as you have stated in the list, was planning on making my own fuel tank, but since it is my first engine i will not go cheap just yet(already got somebody willing to sell me a tank). Thanks for the heads up, will preserve it for the next generation and handle it with great care, It is good to know that somebody( my boss at the company i was doing internship) was willing to just freely give me an engine (have already gotten a free SANWA RDS 8000 from a member of this forum so i guess i am pretty lucky).

Although there is an uncle that owns a RC shop in Kolkata, will go check with him and see if he can help me out, although that is 3 hours away and travelling up and down will not be possible except on some weekends. Hopeful i can make it work on my own and with the help of everybody on the forum.  :salute:

Better buy fuel tank. available in rcdhamaka for just a good price.
Fuel tanks are crucial and any issues with that will ruin the fun.

Dont get angry. But i feel bad every time i see 'starting of' when you mean 'starting off'

I cant sleep today and hence will give my two cents , learn about the low speed and high speed needles in an engine very crucial components as they will help you to tune your engine for the best results .
Its also necessary to learn about the lean and rich runnings of the engine . A engine should not be running to rich as it will not be providing enough power , you can tell when an engine is running rich it will be squirting fuel out of its exhaust , will be making an 4 stroke engine sound . To make a engine run rich just open the needle valve up as it will be giving in more fuel into the carb
Lean running - A good lean setting will provide an engine with the best air/fuel mix to give the best performance out of it but if you run a engine to lean that is close to its maximum power you will overhear the engine . To find the best lean position for my engine i go with the pinch method , fill your fuel tank 1/4 fuel and start your engine take it to its dedired lean position and lift the nose of the aircraft up as you do this the level of fuel decreases in the tank and the engine should gain in RPM if it dies not gain RPM or it stays the same or it drops then you know you are pushing your engine and should rich the mix of air and fuel by opening up the needle .

Fuel tank - as it has been mentioned above a good fuel tank is a must if there is a leak in the fuel tank or its plumbing/tubing it will cause unnecessary acceleration by leaning the fuel mix

Mixing your fuel - fuel mixture plays an important part as well my fuel mix consists of the following materials
Methanol
Castor oil
Nitro methane
Synthetic oil

You should always have a good amount if lubrication in your engine (castor oil) i use 70% methanol 20% castor oil 5% synthetic oil 5% nitro methane

@KKIyer, I bet you meant "not" instead of "nit"? :-) I think now you get the point, no offence taken yet again, albeit i was waiting for grammar nazi to deal with me at some point.

@Rajjaswal99, Will learn about that, Have not reached that point just yet, so for now will start collecting the required materials and once i am ready to get it running, will collect all those fuels and start mixing as you stated here, will save the post for further reference. going to buy a tank within this week, that too and tubing. once I get my allowance i will order the other necessary items such as the glow ignitor and chicken stick. GirishSarwal mentions the rest as being optional so considering my tight budget(I am already taking money from all my other expenses to pay for aeromodelling). :-D

A great and tight learning curve ahead, lean, rich, LSN, HSN, Carbs, four stroking, two stroking, compression, suction, pistons, rings, sleeve, ABC vs ringed engines, glow plugs, brewing fuel..quite some engine-eerie-ing ahead...  :thumbsup:

Absolutely , also check if your glow plug is working well and get a glow plug ignitor as well , do read about priming the engine as to much of it will leave your engine with a lot of fuel
