FBL controllers seems to be evolving to include autopilots. But as far as I know, the FBL controllers don't have accelerometers and they haven't mentioned an accelerometer add on.

Read at couple of places that Leon Luke and Alan Szabo are speaking highly of the new system..or are they supposed to  ;D

Here's a flight video-

Interesting that they included a Castle ESC, instead of their own.  Admitting defeat ? Or a new passion towards delivering better ownship experiences ?

Outsourced?  ;D

In the next version they will probably have a TomTom or Garmin sitting on their deck to make up for the GPS link in this version :giggle:

They will get fired if they don't, they are align sponsored pilots ;D  These guys are so skilled, they will correct for imperfections in the model. They can make crap look good. It is when the lesser souls like us fly that the real problems come out.

Castle have had their share of ESCs burning up.

Any ESC can burn up, depending on what people are doing with them ;D

Ofcourse I wouldn't complain to castle if somebody sets fire to my ESC :D

When I was looking for ESC options for 500 size helis, I came across a lot of posts where ESC (with proper rating and used within specifies limits) had caught fire in flight. Pretty much all manufacturers had a share of the flaming ESCs - CC, hobby wing even kontronik.

I've seen such problems on car ESC's as well.I believe its the new firmware upgrade that is causing all the problems.

Something I found interesting in the description:

It has a governor.

It has accelerometer for stabilization. No more crashing

Accelerometer is a peripheral being planned for the future.

The most interesting bit for me was the admission that flybar-ed is still better (as can be deduced from the phrase "with stability that rivals a flybarred helicopter")  >:D

Ali on our field has tested pretty much every FBL system on the market including the new Futaba one (but not this brand new 3GX), and came to the conclusion that the VBar is the king.  That said, he went back to the flybar on couple of his helis, for reasons of near perfect performance.

Since there was talk of castle ESC's burning up,I thought that this would be the best place to post this.

ICE HV 120 Service Advisory
July 18, 2011

Hello all,

While we take all controller failures seriously, many have felt that our response to the HV120 problem was taking too long. We didn't make any official statements as we couldn't identify any particular pattern or cause for the failures. Our Repair Dept. keeps track of our returns and the returns - for any reason -- on the 120HV were actually very low, less than 3%. Given that we've produced more than 10,000 of these, that low percentage still results in a lot of upset customers.

We were able to test -- and destroy -- a number of HV 120s last week with the help of a very talented heli pilot. Through this process we determined that some, again some, setups stressed a particular component in a way that caused controllers to fail instantly. Adding capacitance to the setup did show promise as a fix but it is a rather cumbersome solution.

Unrelated to this particular problem, Castle has been working with a major component vendor to build these particular components to our specifications. We recently received a small quantity of sample parts for evaluation.

We gave the new components a shot in the HV 120s and found that they were a very tidy and complete solution to the issues that we identified.

We therefore are going to offer all who wish to return their HV120 for one that has this modification an opportunity to do so. We would ask that all retailers and distributors contact Christy Graham

As mentioned above, the new component is just now coming into production and we don't have them in stock. We hope to have them as early as this week (July 18-22).

We will post particulars as to how to go about returning these and what the turn around time may be once we get those parts. Our Tech Support and Warranty people don't have any additional information, so calling them at this point will only lead to more frustration.

We apologize for any problems this matter may have caused, and we hope that our candor and willingness to repair these controllers will help maintain your trust in our products and service.

We appreciate your loyalty and look forward to putting this behind us all and going flying again.

Thanks,

Lee Estingoy

I am a Aero flyer have very limited knowledge on Helis, just curious to know

  • does 3GX replaces Gyros ??
  • can this be used on Helis with Fly bars ?

Title: Re: Align releases 3GX

1) All flybarless systems, including the 3GX, are 3 axis systems, which means yaw/tail stabilization included.  So there is no need for an extra tail gyro.

2) I was not sure about this, although it seemed doable.  A quick search led me to this :

http://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=253574

So it sounds it may not be possible, while another link suggests it may be possible (without confirmation).

http://www.flickr.com/photos/n808/4597943490/  (see the description).

Seems like something to try and confirm ourselves.
