Title: Belt tightens in Hiller 450v2
Post by: emilpaul on September 01, 2014, 04:49:15 PM
Hi All,

I recently had to replace my tail servo on my 450v2.

After replacing it, I re-did the tail blades, gyro setup, rudder endpoints on tx, and position of servo on boom.

Now, whenever I try to fly it, the belt tightens and I get a lot of tail wag. Tried reducing the gyro sensitivity with no change.

I also tried tightening the boom holder screws to the point that I almost stripped one of the screws, but still the belt tightens and a lot of tail wag.

What else can I try? What am I doing wrong?  :headscratch:

One thing you didn't mention was balancing the tail blades. Yes they have to be perfectly balanced , improper balance might result in a tail wag. You had any padding between gyro and the mount.  I don't get you, how can a belt self tight, well in fact it should loose..

When you say the belt tightens - what do you mean ? does the tail boom rotate ? or does
the tail assembly rotate on the boom. ? Generally these helis have a pin/slot arrangement to
prevent rotation.

Disassemble the boom sand it on both ends and and put a light smear of blue thread lock.

Reassemble ,tension everything properly and let it dry for about 8 hrs. That should do it.

If you want to balance the tail blades - do whole thing i.e- balance
as a complete assembly - two tail blades and the hub attached- you can remove the slider
assembly. Take a 3 mm motor shaft and balance between two glasses.

@avesh:  Yes I have balanced the tail blades, there is padding between the gyro and the mount
@saikat: The boom along with the tail assemble moves which tightens the belt. The tail assembly is fitted at the grove

Thanks for all your replies.. any other suggestions?

Hi Emil,

It seems that the issue you are describing is not very clear, perhaps if you can make a video showing what happens to the tailboom or which way does it slide will help us provide you an accurate answer.

However for now you can try adding small amount of magic tape yes magic tape ...LOL. The  rough tape used to fix currency notes on the edge of the boom which should increase the circumference of the boom. This should resolve the issue if I am understanding it correct.

Thanks
Hellyflyer

Found the issue, one of the screws on the tail head was lose. After tightening it the issue is gone :)
