Title: Hiller 450 pro FBL converted
Post by: avesh on September 17, 2013, 12:31:07 PM
Hiller 450 pro converted to flybarless head.

Upgrades.
- FBL head from rcb.
- Tarot zyx

Specification.
- 3800kv motor
- EMAX 08MD Cyclic digital
- EMAX ES9257 Tail digital
- Skywalker 40a esc
- Tarot zyx

Currently cannot say if it was worth upgrading to FBL as i have just hovered it. The quality of Head is nice and grips were tight. Tarot zyx did the job pretty well. The tail was rock solid.

One thing i noticed about the heli that it was sometimes very stable and most of the time drifting in all directions. Currently i am using wooden blades because i dont want to risk my CF blades until everything is perfect, can that be the issue.

check for vibration it has to be very stable also check for cg and trimming ...once this is done u should be able to hover handsoff yes n it will drift in wind  a lil

i suggest u get the avionic x5 from rcbazaar and also the flybarless head from rcbazaar 6500rs should be approx cost for both

thanks shannon the head is from RCBazaar, i could not resist the deal for tarot zyx, @ 2400 (new) with shipping. I have  a more kit coming in future and would reserve x5 for it.

@nitindestiny  1300 (head RCBazaar) + 2400 (tarot zyx) = 3700inr

Congrats Avesh !! The FBL head and your heli looks fantabulous !!
And 2400 was the price u paid lucky guy but other will have to pay 3200-3500/- which is near to Avionics X5 . Still don't know about its performance .
I have zyx right now on my heli . No signs for serious drifts but a yeah a bit. But still its much much better then Flybar .
It can be little confusing while tuning .
And as Shannon Said get rid of vibrations.
You will notice the performance boost on the 3D aspect . It's so easy to flip , roll,  piro etc you will love it.
Are you running on V4.0 ?

so nice of dhruva, i was really lucky to get zyx for 2400 in new condition. I am really impressed about how it holds my 450 tail, its as easy as duck soup. Today morning i played around a bit with 80 - 95% throttle , surge of pitches and tail was solid. One thing i forgot to mention is one of my servo has travel issue, i.e it is lagging. Also i am currently using ~225INR  woodies from RCB :) for testing purpose, which are in worst condition. In a day or so will be testing it on GF blades.

soon going to make a deal for align 3g blades (!800 inr)  :)

dhruva i have a question, how do i check the version of zyx. Its not displayed in software, neither in default one nor in john nz version. The same guy is offering me the blades.

I don't remember how to check but last time when I updated to v4 then
check the pic

And Avesh before Takeoff always check the swash . Sometimes the zyx makes the swash bank forward if kept idle for 5-10min on ground . I saw it happening on v4.0 .

mine on ground tilts to left, but soon stabiliazes on takeoff. I thing i need to play around with gain settings.

Thts kinda normal for this gyro and the backing won't happen all the time

a note to share ->  a few turns around the swash linkages made a bit of improvements. Hover was a bit better but still not as compared to FB.

not possible hover in fb better ur triming  or cg aint right ....let me get a video ill show u how stable fbl really is

fbl units are very sensitive even if the unit is not placed level and properly it will cause errors ...firstly make sure that your fbl unit is mounted correctly ,secondly center ur servos properly ,make sure all ur linkage rods are of exact length ,then level the swash ,then set zero and cylic n collective there after ,before first flight adjust battery for proper cg ,hover check for drift trim appropriately .....u should have very stable hover even hands off ...if ur hovering 1-2 ft from ground ull get ground effect causing heli to drift ..hover at eye level .check if blades are balanced n tracking is proper .vibrations will cause heli to go bonkers ....

oh God never ever thought to check CG of the heli. After upgrading the cg has changed considerably. thanks shannon, its more of tail heavy.. will sure test it in morning..

How can it be tail heavy it will be nose heavy and pls secure ur wires the wiring is very unsafe  :hatsoff:

i had to move the battery further down the mount to balance it,.. bad wiring skills need to learn from you guys.. few days ago in flight  my receiver coax wire went missing, probably it much have messed up with the spur main gear. :)

tested it today, now the heli is near to perfect. Hovers steady and tail holding firmly.

that's good !! I even tested my heli in my Room with handsoff for few sec
So it should be very stable

Be careful dhruva,

pros of FBL :-  heli feels more powerful.
                     slight increase in battery life.
                     Stability and tracks better

cons of FBL :- For beginners , a bit hard to setup.
FBL - bunch of parameters to  considered for setup
Impact on servo life - mine gets a bit hot.

Well in the case of servo , we need good high speed servo in order to get max from your FBL controller . FBL will make your servos work harder so first thing is to take care of servos.
Also confirm that you have choosen the right frequency for your cyclic servo , otherwise it can be responsible for making your servos hot.

Today I had a maiden, every thing was perfect, heli was not drifting, tail was perfect, but I noticed head wobbles with ff flights, , zyx version 4

Switch the gain down a bit .
Then test at lowest headspeed and also on max head speed.

And also lower the Tail rotor Rc dead band to 0 or 10 in advance configuration

fine dhruva i'll vary the main rotor gain along with tail rc dead band, the issue i think is due to  the blades unloaded in vortex state or (check it tmrow) :)

move ur cyclic gain to 30 directly ur wobble will go
