Title: How to straighten bent main shafts or aluminium tail booms
Post by: gauravag on February 13, 2010, 01:54:25 PM
Guys,
While i am away from home, i was wondering if there was any known/easy way to straighten bent main shafts and dented tail booms. My last heli crash left me with one, so i wanted to know if we can re-use it  :salute:, or if it goes to junk

Even a slightly bent shaft poses a risk of vibration, and the tail boom dent affects the drive belt running, so they are critical parts.
 :help:

Like you guessed if they are bent enough, they cannot be fixed properly.

There is a bit of hope if you can apply heat in a localized manner, but the end results are often counter-productive.

For main shafts, people have tried hitting them with rubber mallets, and you get lucky sometimes.

Dents on the tail boom are ok, but bents are trouble.

Note that using an even slightly bent main shaft puts a lot of pressure on the main shaft bearings.

just a though what is the point in going through all this ?? is the tail boom that costly or hard to get by  :headscratch:

because a damaged heli costs a hell lot to repair compared to planes !

Ya, even Iam left with a bent main shaft, tail shaft, flybar rod and tail boom. The bend is so light thats its invisible to note to the common eye but can be detected when rolled on a glass. Shafts are goners, dont want to risk straighting them, but need to find out a way to straighten flybar/Boom. Probably inserting/hitting a rod inside the tail boom that is exactly the inner dia of the boom should solve the problem {:)}. But the problem is finding a Rod exactly of that dia. ;D :P
