Title: I dont have words to explain my feelings - my first flight HK 450 GT PRO
Post by: kumardasai on June 25, 2013, 04:20:21 PM
Hi Friends,

I was very much intrested in helis, so i started with co-axial helis as i do not know about ccpm helis and RCINDIA, 1 year back. After spoiling/breaking around 10 co-axial helis, i came to know about ccpms and rcindia and then i have realized these co-axials are not the best. Stopped buying co-axials. Started looking about 450 size helis. After doing some analysis i have purchased a used 450 size heli and tried to fly many times, all the times it has given me some problem, i couldn't even hover it, I was really highly frustrated with that 450 heli and left it for some days and started practicing more on simulator.

Recently i bought HK 450 GT PRO kit. This time i just wanted to sit with some experienced person and do every thing under expert observation as i am a very new in building it. I approached paladugu_sujith. He is having a very good experience in building/flying/setting helis. He is really such a nice guy he has postponed all his work and helped me in building/setting the heli. He helped me a lot in the entire build and configurations. He did the first test flight. The next day morning, i took the remote and wanted to hover it, almost my fingers are shaking on remote sticks, when i was holding the remote. Slowly given the throttle and tried to control it. When i was controlling and hovering the heli, i was very very happy and i really do not have words to explain my feelings. Finally i have succeeded in flying my first flight of 450 Heli. Attached the video. Its a short video. That was a heavy windy morning.

I would really like to say thanks to paladugu_sujith for his excellent help.

Thank God, Successfully completed the second flight. I was able to hover it for 10 mins (around) continuously. And also did some forward and backward movements, reached little high altitudes as well. (:|~ (:|~ (:|~ (:|~ What an aaammmaaazzziiinnnggg feeling it is!!! wanted to share the video. Each flight is a different feeling. Again i really dont have words to explain my feelings at this movement. yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Thanks a ton Mr.Paladugu_sujith for your excellent help and for your knowledge sharing.

10min- good, i get around 8.0 min on my 450 pro with mild sports mode. Do you verify your battery voltage after the flight or do you use any low voltage alarm.. :)

@avesh: Not exactly 10 mins, it comes around 10 mins, i have not calculated it exactly. Yes i do have low voltage buzzer as well. I am not doing any sport flying on it. Its just a 4 feet height hovering. I guess takes less power for hovering like this, thats why it is giving around 10 mins of flight time.

@paladugu_sujith nice flying, but please get some altitude because i had a pretty bad experience flying at low. :)

@avesh:-
I had some bad experience in flying at little high altitudes (not a very high altitude).

Last week i was practicing moving forward, backward and taking u turns, Its my bad heli went little further from me, i last my orientation and it crashed. As this is a small bird, its very difficult to maintain orientation if we reach a little high altitudes even. Ofcourse there will not be any difference, if it is crashed from low altitudes or if it is crashed from high altitudes. The crash is a crash and have to spend dollars.

A heli meant to be crashed, if not today, may be some other day......

A heli meant to be crashed, if not today, may be some other day...... well saying... :)
@kumar helis are not forgiving, a slight wrong pinch of  a control at low altitudes and all down to earth. A higher altitude can at least give you some time to counter. Yes but if you are learining to fly heli their goes an exception. Of course i agree due to size of 450 it gets pretty hard and orientation issue.. :(

Hey avesh,

can you share your experience with hiller 450 pro as in detail, because im planning to go for hiller 450 pro for my next heli. Now the dollar rate has gone real mad. Its very difficult to import from HK or any other source. In addition to this Dollar problem, these stupid customs have become another head ache now a days.

Thanks
Kumar

@avesh..

i was just doing some fun flying .. i fly nitros now.. it was for kumardasai i was testing the new gyro gain settings.

bad day for him though.. he lost orientation in the last flight and lost the heli.!!

i had a mix review on hiller 450 pro,

this machine is good, for beginner or sports flyer, (for normal flying, & Like fast forward flight)
but if you want zhatak type response on this machine you have to change some parts, because some parts are not suitable for mid type & aggressive 3d maneuver..
i replace main shaft, tail shaft, tail shaft slider, feathering shaft, main gear (helical) & damper from align 450 sports,

i am a not a expert heli flyer...but
now i can say my hiller 450 pro is my kind of machine... ;) ;) ;)

@kumardasai if you are planning for a 450 pro i would rather recommend a 450 pro v2 fBL. alzrc or tarot are fine examples.. Talking about hiller brand the build quality is fine, but has issues relating to head and tail slider. FBL is the future..

+1 for avesh
i have tarot 450 sports...awesome machine in reasonable price , some people are saying tarot is OEM for align corp.

Hmmm yes, the same problems in HK 450 GT Pro also, the tail slider is having little play in offline, to be frank because of that tail slider only my heli got crashed. paladugu_sujith has already suggested me to change the slider.

Yes, the future is FBL, my ultimate target is to fly the FBL only. Slowly arranging all the parts for FBL, recently purchased a FBL Gyro (Avionic X5 FBL GYRO), next planning to take digital metal gear savox servos and then finally i will go for the kit. This is my plan, will execute every thing if every thing goes smooth.

Thanks a lot Mr.laxmansutar and Mr.Avesh for your comments and inputs and suggessions.

@laxmansutar:- How much it costed for you to get the  tarot 450 sports ? is it only kit you imported ? is it FBL or FB ? are these kits available in india ? If not from where i can import it (best source)? what about the spares availability and cost ?

Hi Guys,

I recently developed this hobbey of RC helis and wanted to build one. I am a software architect with no knowledge of electronics and mechanics :). However I started making one heli by taking parts from a remote car. I ripped apart the rc car and used its motors for making my own heli. while the model is ready now, I see a lot of vibration and heli just rotates on the ground without taking off. I have not yet fixed the tail rotor yet. The problem I think may be:
1. The main rotor blade is connected with the main motor with the help of one gear. The shaft is not wrapped with any tube and bearing might be causing the vibration.
2. Blades might be too heavy or may have wrong orientation, of center of gravity. I need help to understand what size and orientation of blades to be used. These are home made blades using a stiff fibre. What should be the angle of the blade and size?
3. What is the functionality of the tail rotor?

Since I am using all parts from a toy car, the ecs allows only clockwise and anticlockwise motion, without a proper acceleration control, I mean no speed control.

Can you please help me on this?

Thanks,
Ashish

i really appreciate spending time in building this copter. I would suggest you to first read/watch how heli works. Google.com should be fine :) .

I think you are probably using Tamiya 980112M Mabuchi motor. That is a brushed DC motor not suitable for flying purpose. Ashish heli mechanism is very complex you have to consider many aspects. I would recommend you to buy a ready to fly heli and then consider this project. cheers

Hello first_flyer,

I really liked the way you have designed your heli, it shows/expresses your intrest and enthu and hardwork. Initially i also tried to do in the same way, i wantedly broken my remote control car and took out the motor and has arranged on a stand and tried to spin in the same way, ofcourse it never worked. There are somany things to consider especially while building a heli. As you already know the CG part, tail rotor part, and main and most important thing is pitch. I suggest you go through all the threads related to heli in this forum. I am sure, you will make your heli fly. Visit seniors as many as possible times and spend time with them to understand the heli concept.

Hi Kumardasai,

Thank you for your prompt responses. Its definitely going to help. The first thing I wanted to see was to see the model lifting from the air that would have given me lots of energy to study and move forward. My basic principle was to make a helicopter at a cheaper price out of old household items and present it to in nearby orphanage which will give them motivation for creativity.

However, with all the responses, I see that I am using a wrong motor to give it enough thrust to lift in the air. I have read that some motors are very powerful and meant for RC helis, but the limitation here with me is that I want to use the remote control and the ecs board that came with the toy which will save my lots of effort of buying and building ecs. But this board works on 3.6 volts Ni batteries which came along with the toy car.
If I use any other motor I will have to supply higher volts which will blow up the ecs board (sorry for my non-technical terms, as I am still learning these terms).

If somehow I get to lift this object with the same motor I shall get some motivation to go ahead. I have worked on the new blades today, I will try to take some time out tomorrow and fix it with the main shaft. I have also worked on a tube to give support to the main shaft to reduce the vibration.

I will keep you all updated.

Hi Kumardasai,

By the way how far did you go with the toy car? Were able to successfully build the heli? Please share some pics and knowledge.

Just by looking at the picture it seems that there is no Pitch in the propellers. they are just in neutral position, which will not give any thrust.
as far as vibration is concern..that is only due to placement of components...little more experiments on your heli will minimize the vibrations.
Good luck!
