Hello Everyone,

My name is Kunal and I am new to this hobby,i recently bought my HK-J500 CCPM 3D EP 500 size Helicopter Kit (JR Voyager).

The kit still requires:

Brushless Outrunner Motor
Servos : I believe we require three servos including one for tail rotor
Radio Gear : Gyro/Rx - Not sure which is best
ESC : 80A or greater.
Battery: 3300mAh 3S 20C or should go for 4s 5000mAh
any thing else i missed?

Please suggest me the best configuration and from where should i order the same.

I am based in Navi Mumbai and will be happy to get some assistance to assemble the same.

Look forward for your support.

Cheers,
Kunal Ranawat

hi kunal
welcome to the hobby...firstly pls open up the heli and careflyy loctite all the metal parts as HK helis are famous to fall apart in the air.. and with the best combo comes the price factor too... i would suggest that you go with the basic / cheap electroncis and not invest lot of money this heli.. once you graduate to a better heli then invest in better electronics.. till then crash and make merry as much as you can in this heli..

i would suggest you get the turnigy or fitec 9650 metal gear servos
a 60 amp esc would be fine and get a bec with it too..
radio is a matter of choice... again spektrum is my choice but its matter of cost and benefit.. if you are in the learning mode get a basic 6 channel 2.4 ghz from Hk itelf (you would have saved some money if you had got a rtf kit).. 6s lipo 2650 25c would be more than enough.. gyro get a HK gyro...
these are my views, now there are also JR servos or Toro servos, the quark gyros to castel creation esc to Jive esc and outrage lipo batteries that will cost you more than 5 if not more the cost of the heli itself... if you need more info you can PM me
take it step by step... and pls get some spares, tail booms, feathering shafts. main gear, main blades, landing skids etc...

am am sorry i completly forgot to write this.. pls check you the local hobby stores in India first and then make a call of getting it from HK or anywhere... this will save you a lot of time and hassle of waiting .. am dont mind paying a bit more locally for the service and speed you get with a LHS..

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

You will need 3 servos for swash and another one (preferably faster) for tail control.  So 4 in total, not 3 as you originally posted Smiley

Someone else here on RCI was building an HK500, was that Vinay ?  Comments ?

Most importantly, remember that these are fairly dangerous, so no shortcuts during the build process !

Turnigy MG930 X 3 + 1 as spare.
HK401B Gyro.
Turnigy 500 H motor and 12 T pinion on 0 75 75 75 75 Throttle curve initially.
80 Amps ESC as the motor is a monster, Plush would do initially. I would suggest cheaper ESCs but 500 Heli is no toy to crash.
HKS 9257 Tail servo.
Battery would be 6S 2650 30 C. You can go for a 3000 mah, but the tail servo and Hk401B are pretty light. So, I would recommend 2650. But Sujju would know better as he has flown 500 helis.

6 channel RX and a 6 Channel TX that supports 120 degree CCPM.

BTW I am yet to buy the CMT, But my electronics stuff would be pretty High end.

All my High end electronics are ebay won and cheap.  Giggle would be a Quark gold metal, ice 75, Bls980. Rest are all cheap HK stuff with few critical part replaced with Align Originals. BTW, the spares of HK heli are cheaper, so I dont have to worry abt crash cost much.  Thumbs Up

Crashing a protos would be expensive I guess.  Shocked I see the prices of 270 USD for KIT with blades.  Sad

for me 2 things are mega important, tail servo and gyro,

on a heli that swings 425 blades i would go for a standard size tail servo, a mid size servo will probably hold ok but not perfect and will wear out pretty fast do it have to work hard, gyro i would go for a micro beast, u can run that as a tail servo or a fbl system witch i highly recommend.

i would run on 6s for sure to keep the amp draw as low as possible do this size is pretty hard on the batteries,(heavy disc load). 2500 3300 mha 25c and up,

if u would decide on fbl system good centering and torque is way more important then speed on cyclic servos ,

motor i would not go for a amp hog. if u learning flight time is more important then power
good luck with your new heli

Hi Kunal,

I have ordered a HK T500 kit too from HobbyKing, did you already receive your kit ?? I am still waiting for mine, it left HongKong on October 4, 2010. God knows when I'll get it.

Keep me updated about your build, we can help out each other.

Some JR parts are here :

http://www.leaderhobby.com/list.asp?type=categories&categories=19 , including a set of "accessories" that seems to include a tail boom.

Vinay, dude I had ordered HK T500, and I got a J500 from Hobby King  Bang Head  Bang Head now the tail boom is already damaged....

If I request a replacement Tail Boom, they will send a T-rex 500 boom coz they will go by my order details.

I escalated the issue to Customer Service, they say that I should send the kit back, in that case the cost of sending it back to HK is more than what I have paid them for the kit, so I thought either I make a tweak on the tail boom socket for J500 and fit the T500 boom or find a replacement tail boom for J500....thats why I entered into this discussion.

Let me know if your ebay guy can get me a JR tail boom, it will be a great help bro...

AFAIK, If HK sends wrong products or missing products then U dont have to send it back.  Thumbs Up coz its their mistake.

But if the item is damaged then u have to.
