Title: Build log - Iambus 2
Post by: K K Iyer on August 20, 2018, 09:32:52 PM
Hi everyone,
Since hardly anyone posts build logs (like shantanu borate, but he does only railway, or sanjayrai55, who has posted over 25, but none lately...), I thought I’d share one.

On RCGroups, there is a Build Off going on for pre 1970 designs, whose plans are available on Outerzone, but for which no pic is available.

These RCG Build Offs have no prizes, just kudos from peers worldwide.
Responses to posts make one feel a part of an international brotherhood!

I found a 1945 design called Iambus 2 by K.J.Miller
https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=4441

So I started building one...

Sir, i looked at the plan, it would be great fun to build this with wood preferably Balsa ! But need a mask to protect from the fine wood dust . Maybe i shall try with thermocole, he he .

I wanted a mirror finish, so I put on 4 coats of dope mixed with talcum powder.
Got a smooth (but not mirror) finish.

The weight went up from 5gms to 7-7.5gms.

So she flew FAST.
And was extremely sensitive to the angle of the elevons.

Then a Guru on RCG said ‘forget about the finish, keep it light, make a thinner fuselage’

I thought that the elevons might be stalling (upside down!) due to the abrupt angle.

So I build a second one much lighter, with a gentle curve for the elevons, by rubbing some Quickfix on the upper side and some water on the lower, and rubber banding to a suitable plastic bottle.

The second one was only 3.5 gms!

@KK iyer

Sir,  the elevons, if we look visually, seems to be up at high angle.  Can trailing edge of elevons be trimmed little bit by sanding as that will reduce the elevon area facing airflow to compensate for higher angle and get a better glide?

Trailing edge curve retained to preserve original shape.
In the second model the elevons have much less reflex.
