Title: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on May 15, 2018, 09:20:08 PM
Hi everyone,
Wonder if anyone would be interested in attempting a one minute flight with an unpowered, RC/non RC, Chuck glider/catapult glider/discus launch/ rubber powered model, if some prize was offered...

If at least 10 members are willing, I would consider putting up a prize of say Rs 5000!

Come on guys.

Edit:
Please see reply #12 for details

Title: How to motivate at least 10? Only 3 so far...
Post by: K K Iyer on May 20, 2018, 09:38:07 PM
Here’s an example (that unfortunately I can’t match)

The Kremer prizes are a series of monetary awards, established in 1959 by the industrialist Henry Kremer, that are given to pioneers of human-powered flight. The competitions and prize awards are administered by the Royal Aeronautical Society's Human Powered Aircraft Group.[1]

The first Kremer prize of £50,000 was won on 23 August 1977 by Dr. Paul MacCready when his Gossamer Condor, piloted by Bryan Allen, was the first human-powered aircraft to fly a figure eight around two markers one half mile apart, starting and ending the course at least 10 feet (3.0 m) above the ground.[2]

The second Kremer prize of £100,000 was won on 12 June 1979, again by Paul MacCready, when Bryan Allen flew MacCready's Gossamer Albatross from England to France.

A Kremer prize of £20,000 for speed was won in 1984 by a design team of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for flying their MIT Monarch B craft on a triangular 1.5 km (0.93 mi) course in under three minutes (for an average speed of 32 km/h (20 mph)). Further segments of a total prize pot of £100,000 were to be awarded for every improvement in speed of at least 5%; the next segment was won in the MacCready Bionic Bat with a flight of 163.28 seconds on 18 July 1984, piloted by Parker MacCready.[3] The third segment was won by Holger Rochelt flying Musculair 1 designed by Günther Rochelt. The fourth segment was won on 2 December 1984, with a flight of 143.08 seconds in the MacCready Bionic Bat piloted by Bryan Allen.[3] The fifth and final segment was won by Holger Rochelt flying Musculair 2, after which the prize competition was withdrawn by the Royal Aeronautical Society on grounds of safety.

There are currently three Kremer Prizes that have not yet been awarded, for a total of £150,000:

26 mile Marathon course in under an hour (£50,000),
Sporting aircraft challenge stressing maneuverability (£100,000),
Local challenge that is limited to youth groups (under 18 years) in the UK.

Title: A 30 second flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on May 25, 2018, 10:04:08 PM
Hi,
Only six interested so far.
I guess a one minute flight from a hand launch may be too ambitious.
Let me simplify.

Target: 30 seconds flight (with supporting video)
Model: Hand Launch Glider (no engine, no motor, no prop, no catapult, no histart, no towline)
Closing date: midnight Sunday 1st July 2018.

Prizes:
1. HK T4A V2 Tx/Rx (unused) or Rs 2000 for the first HLG flight of 30 seconds or more posted on this forum after midnight today
2. Rs 1000 each for next three ...

If there is enough interest, will try to sponsor more such contests within my limited means...

Edit
Hand launch includes javelin, side arm, discus and tip launch!

Sir, intially you did allow rubber power and catapult. I think 30 seconds with a hand launch is really tough. Even the world record is 29 seconds on a paper plane. I think catapult and rubber power should be allowed.
DLG may be a option.
some chuck gliders do achieve 30 seconds but what i mean to ask is cant catapault be included?

http://www.rcindia.org/kites-trains-free-flight-and-all-others/mini-hlg-9'-ws/msg288879/#msg288879

Glides well. (Could manage around 10-12sec before colliding against obstacles)

I think 30 seconds with a hand launch is really tough.
No doubt a challenging target. But 55 seconds, that too indoor (in a hangar) was achieved in 1941!
I had organised a similar contest in Delhi in 1968. At that time we used to get about 10 seconds, so the target was 15 seconds. And the prize was Rs 10!

Even the world record is 29 seconds on a paper plane.
I never said you have to use a paper plane. I expect balsa and/or foam/glass/carbon composite models. The video posted by Rai sir only shows that even a paper plane can do over 20 seconds

I think catapult and rubber power should be allowed.
Postponed for the present due to lack of availability of rubber and props

DLG may be a option.
It is. But free flight, not RC

some chuck gliders do achieve 30 seconds
Here’s a 20 second flight video of my model launched by a friend
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I24AufBPt4I

but what i mean to ask is cant catapault be included?
Presently excluded due to difficulty of standardising the catapult

This challenge is not impossible. Make an attempt. Make several attempts.

Pl see thread of kiran rc.

To cross 10 seconds, you’ll need to get some balsa...

@taksh
As suggested by K K Iyer sir, you need to get balsa for your build, it takes an edge over foam/depron/thermocol due to its stiffness. Foam can flex easily during flights which affects it's gliding ability.

Please DO something.
Let us see some action.
Let us not be only full of doubts.

I don’t even know what polyfilm is.

Why are you guys asking “is this allowed, is that allowed?”
Has any material been prohibited in this thread so far?
The only materials NOT ALLOWED are those that are LIGHTER THAN AIR!

Start your attempt with whatever material you have. Only after you build a model and try to fly it will you realise if it is suitable or not.

One entrant is already test flying successfully, while others are still asking “allowed?”
BEST FLIGHT SO FAR IS 8 SECONDS...

Best wishes

P. S  The main motto of a challenge is to encourage new ideas
It is the final outcome that matters rather than the materials used! :)

Balsa is the easiest, lightest and most suitable material for this type of model, especially for small size, say less than 24” span.

If you are thinking of using other materials, please go ahead and experiment.

A few years ago I built a 12” span wing with a depron core and glass fibre skin. Fuselage of 3mm carbon fibre rod.
Weighs 17gms. Should have used a tube instead of rod.
With light balsa for wing/tail and hard balsa for fuselage, it would be about 10gms.

The whole fun is in trying out your own ideas...

By the way, this model is based on the ‘Vartanian’ with which one Mr Leo Vartanian set a US record of 55 seconds in 1941!

I had searched in my old stuff and located an article with a plan for an HLG called ‘Bulbul’ by Father Carlson in the March-April 1967 issue of Indian Modeller.

I was planning to scan and post the plan and article
1. Here, as an inspiration to entrants
2. On outerzone.co.uk as my tribute to Fr Carlson (whose Tich was my first HLG in 1967)

Unfortunately Golu, my dog, got jealous and chewed those pages to shreds.

RC Aunt, my better half, is attempting recovery/salvage.
Wish us luck...

Many of us may be newcomers to hand launch gliders, and may not have balsa.

We have to start with the size of the wing, tail, fuselage, the glue, and how to balance to get it to fly.

If you don’t have balsa, can you get a disposable dinner plate? This is like 1mm depron.
You will also need (fuselage) a 9-10” stick like a Jhadoo ki teeli (wallaka marthu kutchi for Tamilians)
And some way of gluing. Like hot glue. Or Fevicol if you can wait for long for the glue to dry.

If you have these materials, would you like a simple plan? For a model that will at least fly indoors?

To exceed 10seconds, you’ll probably need balsa.

If desired, I’ll post a (balsa) plan that can achieve at least 10 seconds.
And then others with more potential...

Pl let me know your views...

Thanks.

Make spanwise groove in the bottom of each wing half.
Groove (khaancha) can be made using a dull pencil tip or a 2mm piece of wood.
Select a suitable stick from a paani waali jhaadu.
Cut to length and stick into the groove. Attach with Fevicol, hot glue (very little), or even cellotape.
This is OK for 9-10” span.
For larger size, use 2-3mm depron and bamboo skewer (it is 7”)

Remember that such materials/construction are enough to build a glider that flies, but probably cannot do over 10 seconds.
Longer flight needs a launch like throwing a cricket ball from the boundary to the wicket keeper.
2-3mm foam wings are simply not strong enough.
(Unless covered with glass cloth  ;D)

Best of luck with your experiments.

No one except kiran seems to have even built a model to attempt the 30sec challenge so far.

I wonder if a 30 sec hand launch flight is:
1. Too easy to interest anyone, or
2. Too hard to interest anyone

Most probably too irrelevant to interest anyone...

But I suspect that some may have tried and discovered that it’s not so easy

That’s why it’s called a Challenge...

Hi KK

Have been off this forum for quite some time.

Have been busy mentoring some modellers of our AMAI who are getting into Indoor FF rubber after a lot of my goading.
Hoping to have atl east 5 serious participants for the next AMAI Indoor Nationals which is being planned for the coming winter.

Just saw your post on the HLG/CLG rubber FF challenge

Yes I would be happy to participate in the challenge for indoor rubber FF but in the event my flight is the longest I would like the prize to be awarded to the second best.
I would like to do it so it goads me to do some flying which I have been unable to do for quite some time due to other pre occupations.

Yes 30 sec in chuck glider is a tough job. Indoor HLG record is around 45 secs.
Rubber power over one minute is within anyone's grasp if they go through the learning curve and get the hang of it. Ofcourse you have to have the TAN rubber to get any meaningful duration.

Can provide plans for rubber that even a novice can build with minimal construction skills.

@glidiator
Hi Anant,
This time I thought a Rs5000 prize may elicit a 1 minute HLG attempt. It didn’t.
So I changed it to 2000 for the first 30 sec HLG flight, and 1000 each to the next three.
And simplified it. No motor, no engine, no rubber power, no histart, no towline, no catapult.
Only Hand Launch. Javelin, side arm, tip, or discus.

BTW, 55 sec indoor hand launch was achieved in 1941! See reply #40

Surprised that no one has even considered copying that model.
Mine has a glass skinned depron core wing.  That’s another story.
But even that could have inspired someone to experiment...

Re rubber powered model plans, pl see this
http://www.rcindia.org/kites-trains-free-flight-and-all-others/a-small-pilatus-porter/msg257138/#msg257138

May be too much.
Perhaps a link to an AMA DART is reqd!

Edit
Sorry

When what you said was
‘(I) Can provide plans for novice rubber...’

Some suggestions:

To achieve 10-15 sec, you’ll need a 9-10” span model of 6-10gms weight.
This is a good starting point for training your launching style.

Heavier models launch higher, but lighter models glide better. A balance has to be found.

Those who have crossed this stage can look at two pioneering high performance models of differing design:

1. Vartanian (55 secs in 1941)
2. Yellow Bird (1961). In the 70s, nearly every aeromodeller in India had one. Including at least 5-6 current members of this forum!

Look them up. The articles that accompany the plans are interesting to read...

Made one about 50 years ago, launched from a tree I climbed up  ;)  Got about 8-10 seconds flight and was over the Moon! Second flight a stray dog got afyer it, and broke the stick fuselage in the middle  :-[

Check this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvvEjwPg2mY&feature=channel&list=UL
Observe the wing.
This is called a flapper wing with the trailing section being a very thin foam section attached to the balsa leading edge section.
This foam flap can be bent to give more lift.
But since it is very thin during launch the initial force / speed makes the flap bend upward so you get less resistance and more height.
At the peak height when the glider transitions to level flight the flap bends down to give more lift at slower sleep and therefore the sink rate is reduced.
There is a lot of Aerodynamics and techniques involved in what are simple HLGs

@glidiator,
Sir,
Can you please tell us the total weight of all the raw parts in the YB kit? Excl nose weight.
Ready to fly weight as per original Alan Webber Aeromodeller plan is 1.55oz, or say 45gms, after tissue covering and many coats of finish...
Thanks

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: Glidiator on June 14, 2018, 02:29:05 PM
Will give pics of parts in the kit and weight.
You said tissue covering. You mean tissue is put over solid wing and then doped/ finished to very smooth coat to give least drag.
Also got a Sailaway from Aurora but never really trimmed it for good flight. Must do all that now.
Some other HLGs I got from Aurora are Tiny Tot, Tail wind, and some others. Ordered a whole lot quite some years ago for work shops. Some leftover in the carton. Now use them as demo pieces when doing Aerodynamics workshops that give an overview of various types of Aeromodelling stuff that can be indulged in

Sorry Pranav have not made a detailed study of effect of various tail configurations.
Guess it is a matter of design based on what performance the aircraft is being designed for.

Different types of tails

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 14, 2018, 08:58:29 PM
A bit too early to discuss flapped wings, Y tails etc.
I can assure you that neither is required to achieve 30 seconds.
Better to simplify and add lightness

The intention behind this thread is to encourage entry level efforts, not high tech

Waiting for someone to post:
1. 10 sec test glides
2. 20 sec test launches
3. Full launches approaching 30 seconds

Once we cross that stage,
We can discuss Y tails, of which I have a little experience (see my earlier builds / videos)
And Glidiator can discuss flapped wings, of which I have no experience
And someone on this forum (I forget who), who built carbon fibre composite wings 2-3 years ago, may share his knowledge/ experience...

Forgot to mention that the Yellow Bird was doing over 60 seconds back in 1961

So come on guys, show us that 30 seconds can be done by ‘Made in India’
Theories and high tech can wait till that basic level is crossed.

@KKIyer sir@Glidiator sir
The question regarding Y tail was just curiosity after watching video in post #77.

Currently i am searching for ballast materials any suggestions?

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 14, 2018, 11:41:13 PM
@pranav09
Ballast is used in gliders to increase the weight and hence wing loading.
Usually in hollow wing spar tubes. Often water in full size sailplanes, steel rods in RC.
You probably don’t need ballast.

Perhaps you meant nose weight.
Try plasticine, solder wire, lead shots, wheel balancing lead weights etc...
Even blobs of hot glue  ;D

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge

Yes nose weight.
Will try hot glue or solder wire

@PranavK09.

Effect of Y-Tail.  Less drag due to no vertical fin.  Less AuW.  You may loose directional path s in case model has undesired turning tendency as in most cases free flight models do not carry moveable surfaces. Vertical fin provides directional stability.

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 15, 2018, 01:06:19 PM
@dreamliner
Perhaps you meant V tail?

Effect of Y-Tail.
Less drag due to no vertical fin. The bottom leg of the Y is the vertical fin
Less AuW. For same area weight will be same

I think there should be a new thread for empennage designs.

Sure. Someone can start one. Or I will. But not just yet.

This is essentially a ‘flying challenge’ thread, to encourage attempts to achieve in India, duration goals achieved abroad over 50 years ago.

Theoretical knowledge is no use if it doesn’t produce practical results.

I’m not against theory. After all I’m the one who started posting tech talks.
But can we see some practical results based on what we already know?
C’mon guys. Show us some action...

Nice, neat build.

Suggestions:
Grain of wing tips needs to be spanwise, else will break if tip touches ground
More dihedral

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: PRANAVK09 on June 17, 2018, 02:11:49 PM
@KKIyer sir
After i glued the tips then i realised that the change in grain.and yes more dihedral is required.
I am going to make another again.

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 17, 2018, 02:40:17 PM
@pranavk09
You can save this wing by cutting off the tips, making a cut about 3” in from the new edge, and raising the outer part about 20 degrees or so.
Good luck with your experiments...

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: PRANAVK09 on June 17, 2018, 10:51:52 PM
Yes sir will try that.
This one goes straight to some distance and then increases AOA and lose height and again goes straight.(stalls)
Like ballooning in flat bed planes.

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 17, 2018, 11:09:06 PM
Like ballooning in flat bed planes.

Huh? Didn’t understand that.

A nice floating glide depends on a combination of the tail size/distance from wing, decalage or difference in angle of incidence of wing and tail, and CG position to suit a speed just above stalling speed.

The first remedy for stall and dive is to add a bit of nose weight...

Later there will be other complications needing other remedies.
But we can tackle them one by one...

I was wondering will it be cheating if I use this method to get max unpowered flight time.
A lightweight airplane attached to a heavier airplane.
The job of the heavy airplane is to give momentum when thrown up. Thus max height.
The lighter one will come gliding down for max time??!!

Hello Sir,

Your consistent push made me make a free flight plane....
Sorry to see not much enthu but I took out some time on sunday, not sure when i would be able to try & tune it to fly.
Not sure of results either. Usually Balsa is used for this purpose & i have used some HD foam sheets lying with me.

Lets see how it works out. I would do it out of curiosity rather than challenge.
Whats your comment on 12Gram weight ? ( this is my first chuck glider)

Pics below...

WS --> 16 Inch
Material --> HD thermacol Sheet
Aerofoil --> Clark Y ( by hand sanding)
Fuse --> Bamboo Stick
Glue --> 5 Min Epoxy ( yes weight issue but had no other choice as nothing to hold pieces in place)

Hello Sir,

I am very much aware of "In air Namestay" by foam wings....

Notice I have put fibre spar in this chuck glider ... so it can flex but not fold.

Title: Re: One minute flight challenge
Post by: K K Iyer on June 25, 2018, 02:21:58 PM
@rastsaurabh,
Nice one!
It will fly, and quite well too, as test glides from shoulder height will doubtless show.
Then you’ll have to see if it is strong enough to take full power launches...

12gms is lighter than possible with balsa (unless you had contest grade, ie, <=6 lbs/cft)

My 12” span model with fibreglass skinned depron wing and CF boom weighs 17 gms.

Eagerly await test glide video.

But I learned two things:
1. A cash prize of 5000/2000/1000 is worthless
2. No Indian is even willing or capable of trying to achieve performance achieved abroad 50 years ago

Wonder if it is the lack of capability or inadequate incentive?
Maybe just lack of access to balsa

Maybe someone will sponsor Rs 1 lac for the first 1 min HLG flight...

Will very large wing help?? Even with a small fuselage?? (there are 2 questions)
And how will pitch yaw and roll even help with gliders??
Will flaps help and are flaps allawoed rc controlled after reaching maximum height??

I gave this a try with a special paper glider. Got to 12 seconds. Nothing more.
I just got done with my exams and I'm out of balsa wood so can't do the challenge yet.
I have a few planes in mind from the old times. I'll make those planes after I get some good balsa.
Not for the competition or the cash prize but just to see how long it can fly.

The challenge CLOSED AT MIDNIGHT ON SUNDAY, 1st July with NO SUCCESS.
Extended to midnight 15th July only for
1. Mehul Anand, in case winning it will help him in his MIT entrance bid, as per his dreams...
2. Taksh, so that he can show that he has the necessary DUM to support his Badi Badi Baatein...

In your case, expect a present from me, and maybe from Glidiator too...

The fact remains that so far,

I guess the 1 minute challenge was a mistake on my part.

@pranavk09,
Break the centre joint and increase dihedral. (Say 15degrees each side)
I’m including you in the deadline extention to 15th July midnight

So participants for 15 July extension are
Mehul anand
Taksh
Prabal
Pranav

Come on guys.
Show us a 30 sec flight
Remember that 1 min achieved in UK/ US 50 years ago!

I’d be glad to include any other late comers.

NO MEMBER HAS DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO ACHIEVE A 30 SEC HAND LAUNCH FLIGHT!

I guess the 1 minute challenge was a mistake on my part.

I will participate for this.

All those motivated (provoked?) by my posts, your builds/flights eagerly awaited...

Since only 3 days left (finally closes midnight Sunday 15th), let me offer a few small last minute incentives for the first to achieve these HLG goals:
1. One minute Rs 5000
2. 30 seconds Rs 2000
3. 20 seconds Rs 1000
4. 10 seconds Rs 500

Glidiator may possibly add a gift...

Please do not misunderstand me.
I’m a pensioner. Just doing what I can afford to encourage entry level aeromodelling.
(I suspect my efforts may be totally irrelevant)

Do try, irrespective of what youthink of my efforts...
Regards

Edit:
As an afterthought, I will accept a ‘Double or Quit’ from any of the winners...

Hi all,

Iyer Sir,

Your 1 minute challenge is quite interesting and i too would have taken part but due to work relocation could not.

I have built quite a no of chuck gliders and from experience can say that a white wing paper plane or a Zing wing folding glider can be best option. Although balsa can also do but will need lot of experience with sanding the wings to perfect aerofoil for shape for max glide.

I have seen white wings paper plane and the Zing wing do maximum glide with catapult ofcourse.
