Hello fellows, I am doing a project on ornithopter. Its flapping frequency is 10Hz, with a weight of 330g. I have done the calculations. Wing span :80cm. But i dont have any idea on the Remote control unit. I have chosen the motor and its ESC. Can anyone help me with how to choose the remote control unit ? I will be needing two micro servos.
Motor :Avionic C2830 KV850 QUAD brushless motor
ESC :Avionic 20Amp

Hi Anand, welcome to the forum,
see if you need a basic tx with good programming capabilities, I'd suggest you should go for RCB6i by RCBazaar, its a good entry level TX with some great features, and would allow you to set multiple point throttle curve, expo and mixing etc (although I don't know what kind of features you require in the tx for ornithopter).
But if you are interested in this hobby and want to stay for a while, which I hope you would, I'd suggest you to go for an advances transmitter, as it is the first and most important investment you make in the hobby. Although people are banging there heads over the best TX for a beginner for over some time now, but I personally found TGY9X or FrySky9x (same thing different vendors) with ER9X upgrade, more than I could ever ask for. So think about it too before buying

happy flying, and don't forget to post the pics of your ornithopter
cheers

Hello Anand,
You had been suggested by the right person(as above) Hats Off you should go with this Thumbs Up since as a beginner this is a very good tx with all necessary features at an affordable cost. Later on you could definitely go for advanced radios...
Do post pics of your ornithopter...

Thank you Bilal.  Smiley The Radio set looks promising, though the only problem still lingering is "Out of Stock" label. RCbazaar doesnt have any stock of radio units. I went through different sites, and found these, which are in stock. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Grin

hello madaquif,

i have just worked up the mechanism, with an ordinary toy motor.  Grin. Since i hail from a remote part of Kerala, i couldnt get access to brushless motor. I have narrowed down my requirements. once i get all the parts, i will surely post a video, let alone an image Smiley. I am from a mechanical engineering background, so it is really difficult for me to get along with electronics.

Yes, sir. Since all other units seem far from accessible, i guess i have to resort to the expensive ones. Can anyone tell me how do i post a video of the mechanism ?

I have chosen to use  Wolfpack 2200mah 30c 11.1V  http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/2264-wolfpack-2200mah-30c-111v.aspx . this because the motor i chose Avionic C2830 KV850 QUAD brushless motor http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/1905-avionic-c2830-kv850-quad-brushless-motor.aspx  uses cells 2-4. the battery being lipo 3 cell in series, giving 11.1 v. Can i be sure it can fulfill all the requirements ? Also, there is no mention on the driving circuit of the motor, from my research of dc brushless motors, i have understood that it needs a driving circuit. Could anyone tell me the specific driving circuit for this particular motor ? Smiley

The motor that you are using could be paired up with a 20A ESC. I'll have to say that 2200mAh lipo would be a bit heavy for ornithopter...

thank u utkarsh sir. i have come across beginner low cost Radio unit from these sites. Regarding the battery, should i opt a lighter battery ? wont it affect the performance then ? lesser mah rating ? battery specs say, it could work on 2 to 4 cells lipo. but mah rating is independent of the number of cells. any help ?  Grin also, any idea on the driving circuit ?

See it depends on your design and weight of the ornithopter... i don't have much experience of these but yeah i'll have to say that 2200 mAh lipo is heavy. Also you could go for some low weight battery.. could be a 2S upto 1000mAh.
And please please.. don't call me sir. I am just 8 months old to this hobby. I am also a student from electronics discipline. There are many many people here who really deserve sir... but not i for sure...
moreover, i would like you to talk to arun.sreelakam... he has build a ornithopter recently.

Mah rating is directly proportional to flight time.. more mah more flight time..

The more is the mAh rating, more you get the flight time. A 2S lipo would be perfect for your ornithopter. Now, you just need to select one which is best suited for your model keeping weight in mind. 2S 1000 mAh could be an option...

Yeah you could use this battery but discharge rate is a bit high. BTW which motor you are using? Also, burst rate of your battery is around 30C so you should not go for 40A ESC. Also, 40A ESC for an ornithopter is over powered... You should go for 20A ESC...
Please do tell which motor you are using. Also, what is the AUW of your model.

The recommended ESC for this motor is 25A. Then you should go for this one. Also, the burst current of the battery, motor operating current etc, together decide the ESC to be chosen. You should go for this:

Yeah it seems to be good one. just asking, why everything from hobbysea only?
Also, ESC is chosen a liitle more than the max. current motor could draw...

A doubt. My ESC is http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__25365__turnigy_multistar_30_amp_multi_rotor_brushless_esc_2_4s.html which has a constant current discharge of 30 A. My battery is http://www.ebay.in/itm/Turnigy-2200mAh-2S-20C-Lipo-Pack-with-XT60-Connector-/191012282294?pt=IN_Toys_Games_School_Stuff&hash=item2c79381fb6&_uhb=1#ht_2059wt_1188 , which is a 2s lipo battery of 2.2Ah rating and 20C cosntant current reating. Now please correct me if i am wrong :

the battery has a peak discharge of 30C. But its constant current rating is 20C which means 2.2Ah x 20C = 44 A current can be discharged constantly. So the power input would be 7.4 V x 44 A = 325.6 W. Now, the ESC has a rating of 30A. So the max current that can pass throught the ESC is 30 A, isnt it ? so it wont let anything above 30A to pass through it, which means i can never get 44 A out of the battery ? so if the motor load increases, and the battery gives out of a current higher than 30A the ESC will burn ? Am i wrong to get into this conclusion ? Please help. Huh? Huh? Huh?

You are right but most esc comes with burst rating which can be obtained for 10 secs

So if the motor load increases, the ESC will burn ? or will it simply restrict the current to 30A for ten secs and then come down to the normal rate ? or just simply discharge ? do i need to keep a higher reating rating. preferrably a 50 A ESC for the 44 A that is tp be discharged from the battery ?

http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/1910-avionic-c2826-kv1900-brushless-motor.aspx this is the motor i plan to use. i am still in the fabrication stage, and havent procured the rx tx unit yet. so i am not sure as to how much current my motor would take when in load. its kv rating is 1900. can i figure out the current it would take if i were to put in a 2s battery 7.4v across it ?

oh.. reducing the battery to 1s lipo of 3.7 v ? but that would mean reduction in speed ? considering i follow the current 2s lipo, would it damage the setup ? it wont work ?

Hello Everyone !!  Grin narrowing on down to the rx tx unit. However I am really puzzled. I have come across this http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7527__corona_synthesized_dual_conv_receiver_6ch_72mhz.html as my potential receiver unit with a corresponding tx unit. However seeing the pins of the receiver, i am really in a dilemma whether these would fit into the female plugs of ESC http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__25365__turnigy_multistar_30_amp_multi_rotor_brushless_esc_2_4s.html and the servos : http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/799-avionic-metal-gear-9g-servo-av9amg-analog.aspx . can anyone tell me  ? The pins look a bit more thicker and from my knowledge they wont fit into the plugs of ESC and rx, Is there a specification to judge this ? Am i wrong ? please help

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

If I understand the need correctly, any store carrying RC heli spares (in stock, of course) should have these.
