Title: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: arindamt on October 30, 2014, 09:09:32 PM
Any idea what type of Rubber band is used in these type of planes as in the video (and there are so many others in YouTube).

The rubber band I used last just for 5-7 Sec to complete the 100 rotations

That video is expert material.
Perhaps you can look for something called 'Peanut Scale'

Welcome to this forum, and best wishes.

it is Tan2 rubber - got a pound of assorted widths years ago from FAI model supply who
were the source at that time.

Tan2 is no longer in production and has been replaced by Tan Super Sport.

Still got a lot left and if any one wants (free) pls PM me.

only thing is pls do not expect overnight - as it will take some time.

not as far as I know.

This is a very niche and somewhat unglamorous product.

The Indian aeromodelling market is dominated by multirotors and their ilk...
no hobby shop is going to keep anything which is not going to sell.

Even a mega site like HK does not stock.

Ok Guys, I got the Glue gun this weekend and finished making it. This is made from Styrofoam plates and the rubber band I got from Saikat-da...., I think I did some 100 turns and it can go up to 200 easily. From the test fly...I think the plane is not going up. Anything that can be done? should I put the wings little higher in the front part? Please give your feedback. Thanks-

@arindamt,

No. Model seems ok. For the present don't change anything except:

Add a little down thrust and increase the number of turns.
As you wind the rubber, first it will get twisted. After some more turns, you'll see something like knots forming, which is actually a second layer of twists. You should be able to safely wind till the second twists cover the entire length of the rubber. Increase winds gradually in successive flights till you reach that stage.

Post a video with more winding!

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: arindamt on December 08, 2014, 04:39:02 PM
Thanks a lot KK....how do I add more "down" thrust?

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: K K Iyer on December 08, 2014, 04:55:51 PM
Half expected that question  ;D
Remove prop holder.
Sand a slight taper (~2degrees) in the top half inch or so of the fuselage.
Stick thin balsa shim to the bottom half inch or so of the fuselage (sharp end facing towards rear).
The idea is to make the prop shaft point slightly down.

As power is increased, it will have a tendency to nose up. Down thrust will compensate.

Your model is slightly tail heavy. Add a small blop of plasticine (smaller than a pea) to the nose. This will correct the wavy flight path.

The rubber you are using is not just a rubber band.
Hope you tried out your model today before dark!
If you send a pm to Saikat sir, i'm sure he'll be happy to see your video and advise.

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: saikat on December 09, 2014, 01:10:47 PM
flight was quite good.

as K.K pointed - add downthrust ( the propeller should be pointed slightly downwards
when the plane is level) and maybe a small amount of weight in front.

well done - also  google "stretch winding rubber power plane"- you can easily put about 600 turns without
stressing. as you add more turns you will need to increase downthrust

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: K K Iyer on December 11, 2014, 09:44:09 PM
You are getting too much power for too short duration.
Reduce thickness of rubber if you can, and increase length.
Reduce right rudder a bit, add right thrust instead, and find a larger field.
Remember Saikat sir's advice about 'stretch winding'

If you are under 18, and manage a 1 minute flight, i'll give you a Rs 1000 gift voucher as a prize.
I'm sure Saikat sir will be happy to reimburse me 50%!

Build another with less sharp camber in the wing, and will with better/more accurate finish.
Best of luck.

@saikat sir,
Poor me, the owner of only one single rubber band!

Could use some for the Magic too (360gms with 4 servos and giant wheels!, excl Rx, Esc, motor, prop)

Edit:
Tried twice, but first pic still upside down :headscratch:

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: arindamt on December 11, 2014, 10:15:27 PM
Thanks Saikat-Da and KK sir. 'Peanut Scale' surely inspired me lot. I will also try to build a winding tool to do a  'stretch winding' and make a new one with less sharp camber. 1 Min looks too much to me for now but definitely I will try my level best. But I am already more than 18 :)

here are two of my few last remaining rubber power planes

first is a traditional model - balsa / japanese tissue and balsa prop ... can manage
about a minute in still air (18" span)

the second one is of foam wings and tail having a prop cut from a soft drink bottle

flies indoors and outside in calm weather

For those with limited resources, I may suggest my ideas. Fuselage=wooden Nonstick spoon cut into half. Propeller= same wood sanded to thin sheet glued to refill and shaft made of steel safety pin cut and bend to shape.Wings made of polystyrene plate attached together by sellotape.Wheels made of caps from vials used in hospitals attached to thin metal wires. And waiting for Saikat's rubberpower....

@si74,
That is a nice flyer!
Do you still have it?
If so, perhaps you could try these:
1. Increase the fin size about 50%, or add a sub fin below the stab. This will cure the wing rocking (Dutch Roll)
2. Add more turns and/or more rubber if you can.

If you had posted a build log, please post a link. Otherwise post a build log if you have photos.

yes sure sir,I do have it.It is a recent video,Thank you for the diagnosis for its malfunction,I'll surely rectify it.Thanks to arindamt, for this model was inspired by his creation. The propeller was made from handwash bottle, tail piece a straw ;D to reduce weight, the wings lengthened using double side tape. Here are some snaps...

Hi ahmedt, for the takeoff power, I used usual transparent rubber bands one layer mixed with tourniquet ( used by nurses) split into four then one piece tied together.

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane

Hi,

last night Mr KK Iyer mentioned the rubber chord that we have in the sock elastic, ever thought of trying that.  I have also seen the street balloon vendors use it for the Yo Yo balloons.

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: SI74 on July 03, 2015, 09:05:49 PM
But the elastic thing( of course not from socks :) ) I tried. But not good enough,as its turns wont last long . Somebody ( Now I cant remember, sorry) in this forum mentioned about tourniquet which is as good as Tan and so I too tried that and found it really good. I am yet to try the original Tan super sports one which I hope Saikat would send me and then I'll write a review after comparing.

Title: Re: Query regarding rubber band powered plane
Post by: SI74 on July 05, 2015, 11:40:49 PM
Two three things to keep in mind when you make rubber powered planes.1. Keep the centre of gravity a little to the front.2. As you add more and more rubber bands or power, be ready to add weight at nose in the form of paper clips. I found medium size paper clips are perfect.
3. If you use styroform plates as wings, tie a thread( Sellotape strips are perfect) to attach end of wings to fuselage so that when it flies the wings won't bend upwards.

Build log:
1.First cut a Balsa wood (12*6 cm) fuselage 43 cm long.

2.Plastic prop 7"( bought from RC Bazaar) through a refill fixed with safety pin at a downward angle and hot glued.

3.Then made wing reinforcement with thin Balsa strip (4mm wide 27cm long) in a double V shape, fixed to another thin 4mm wide 10 cm long balsa strip at the centre ( bend to aero foil shape)

4.Attached 60 cm long 10 cm wide styrofoam wings with 10 cm sub fins on each end to the upper V.(hot glued a balsa rib at the centre of the wing)

5.Finally connected the wings to fuselage using a light weight packing foam shaped to attach the centre Balsa wood piece.

6.The stabiliser and rudder is attached at the rear end on a  4mm wide balsa wood strip 12 cm long.

7.Rubber power is 2mm wide tourniquet stripped - 48 cm long; mixed with six 4" rubber bands.

And the build time ....  ???  2 hrs y'day night after office hrs  ;D  8-)

Saikat, that rubber model of yours is that from the Aeromodeller plan? Victoria/Victorian something? The bamboo and piano wire legs look very familiar.

SI74, tip for you to win that 1000 voucher. Learn to read thermals/updrafts and these would help you break the 1 minute mark, but be careful, too strong and it would take away your pride and joy.

Are you still using Castor to lube your rubber motor? Switch over to silicone, that will not degrade your motor like other oils do.

Checked back to see if i was hijacking si74's thread.
Turns out it was started by arindamt! Who also successfully flew a rubber powered model.

Since some veterans (who know stuff like the Tomboy was designed by Vic Smeed etc, and much more besides) have joined this thread, perhaps an oldie can enter.

Tomorrow i will search for old mags and plans left over after burning the termite infested ones...

Looking for (old) plans for (presumably young) guys like si74 and arindamt. And kiran rc and jana.f22.

Hope to find a few over 50 years old.
Attached is a pic of a Sep 1953 issue of a mag, a sample of the places i'll look in...
And a pic of a 74 year old design i built last month (though with glassed depron wing and CF fuselage)
And a pic of a token gift for the first member to identify the design.

Bought a sky surfer from rcbazar. But when I launched, it was nose diving to right all the time. So what I did is applied a bit of hot glue to the fuselage tip so that the prop is slightly oriented to left; and that did the trick! Now it's flying perfectly. ;)

pls ask if you need more details

Yes, this is the one I was thinking of making all these days... How is it made and how to cut perfectly? Please give me details. Manually cutting to desired width is a strenuous effort. I checked the fai site, the shipping charge for a 2 dollar product is 42$ !!!! So this device would be ideal for me. Please give me the details.
