I was and am heavily into Rockets.  Solid fuel with Nitrate propellant. Have made my own fused sugar nitrate propellant and black powder rockets. Tell me how can I help?

Was just curious VC. Would be awesome to see them in action :) They fly 900 feet up. Very impressive.

I have never measured the altitude, but my rockets fly 2 times higher than the Sivakasi ones at 1/4 the price per piece.

Diwali is around the corner, people from Kolkata reading this can you please check the price of SHORA and GANDHAK (Potassium Nitrate and Sulphur  - Kalyan Prodhan - are you there?) at Gariahat Market or Lake Market and let me know.

I have had some experience on this.  Used Potassium nitrate + Sulphur + charcol powder. As many websites say, best results can be obtained by using a ceramic ball mill to grind the ingredients. Note that the chemicals involved are extremely potent and it can burn faster than you think!.. So, it is highly dangerous to work with these chemicals without proper protection.

Hydrogen peroxide rockets (H2O2) are another option... this one is much safer but a little difficult to construct. Getting pure H2O2 is the biggest problem but there is a simpler way to safely distil the H2O2 from impurities.

I always thought of using these in my models to do a RATO but never did.

some queries...

1. can these rockets be used to launch a glider from ground and how to calculate the thrust of one rocket...or is it just make, put and go....
2. what material is used for outer shell?
3. Are these same as the one used in rockets during Diwali?

I have made my own Ball Mill using an exhaust fan motor. Diwali rockets are black powder rockets, whereas the ones that I make use fused Potassium Nitrate and Sugar propellant. Nitrate is not easily available and is restricted. However, one can buy it from a Lab reagents shop. 99.99% pure KNO3 manufactured by Merck, retails at Rs.600/- per kg. The local stuff sells at rs.100/- per kg.

Thrust is dependent on the burn rate of the propellant and the exhaust nozzle dia (there are other factors but this is not the place to discuss that in detail).

There are videos of people launching gliders with these rockets, but I've never tried it.

Rolled chart paper can be used to make the outer casing, unless you can procure the actual stuff from Skylighter.com. Nowadays, some stuff is available on ebay Global.

There was a show on discovery science some time ago where there was a 'rocketry' competition.One of the guys sent his rocket up and brought it down like a glider.Most of the others used parachutes.Never thought someone was doing this in india.Could you tell us  a little more VC sir?I would love to know.
